The iconic yellow lettering that first appeared on a D.C. street near the White House in June is gone. Black Lives Matter Plaza, as it’s known, has been paved over.
But those big yellow letters will be back.
In a live discussion with Jonathan Capehart of The Washington Post Thursday, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said that the city plans to make Black Lives Matter Plaza “a permanent art installation in the District.”
“…we’re undergoing a process to make the installation more permanent, with lighting and landscaping and all the things that you expect in an iconic art installation,” she said.
Less than two weeks after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, on Friday, June 5, Black Lives Matter Plaza was unveiled on 16th Street NW, complete with a new street sign.
