This week we take a step back in time to learn about a bloody race war that took place in the summer of 1919. Whites and Blacks clashed in the streets of Washington DC in 1919 amid nationwide tensions and fighting over rights and equality. With the influx of Black war veterans returning home, DC Blacks would be no pushover. The fighting in DC got so bad that people nicknamed the summer of 1919 “Red Summer”. It was reported that of all the cities where fighting had erupted, DC was the only place where casualties were equal on both sides.
