Janelle Monae & M.I.A. Perform Hologram Duet (Video)

From Rolling Stone:

M.I.A. and Janelle Monae performed two live duets last night – even though they were playing on opposite coasts. Aided by futuristic (and, let’s face it, terrifying) technology, hologram images of Monae (in Los Angeles) and M.I.A. (in New York) were beamed onto each other’s respective stages for a show-closing collab, set up by the folks at Audi as part their new A3 launch.

Now, thanks to a 30-second fan-shot video of the duo tackling M.I.A.’s “Bad Girls,” it’s clear the performance wasn’t some kind of sci-fi dream. The brief clip shows M.I.A. joined by Monae’s energetic hologram, which bounces around the stage and spits some hard-edged rhymes. According to a press release, the event marked “the first hologram performance with integrated video mapping” and utilized “3D projection mapping to add layered depth of field perception with animated graphic content.”

PICS: WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Speaks At M.I.A. Concert Via Skype

M.I.A. In Concert - New York, NY

Spotted on Pitchfork:

Last year, M.I.A. provided the theme song to Julian Assange’s TV show “The World Tomorrow”. Last night, during her New York concert, M.I.A. had a surprise opening act: Assange, who delivered a message live via Skype. According to Consequence of Sound, he spoke from the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he lives under diplomatic asylum.

Obviously, M.I.A. is a vocal supporter of Assange and WikiLeaks—remember, she called her mixtape Vicki Leekx. He is wanted for arrest in both the United Kingdom and the United States. Check out a photo M.I.A. posted of her “EPIC guest speaker” below.

M.I.A.’s new studio album Matangi is out November 5 through Interscope, and it’s available to stream right now. Read our recent interview with M.I.A. here.

TRAILER: The M.I.A. Documentary That The Powers That Be Don’t Want You To See

So, M.I.A. did a documentary with Stephen Loveridge that features the likes of Spike Jonze, Diplo and Kanye West. Apparently, certain bigwigs have blacklisted M.I.A. (I guess for being the rebellious soul that she is, I don’t really know). Above is the teaser to said documentary, of which a movement has kicked off for the purpose of getting the final project to the masses (M.I.A. is even trying her hand at Kickstarter). Check it out above and help push the clip is you support its release.
