J. Cole: “Barack Obama Would Not Be President If He Were Dark Skin”

J.Cole-TheMaskedGorilla.com_

J. Cole spoke on anti-gay lyrics and Hip-Hop homophobia with BET. He also gave his opinion on the power of skin-color, using President Obama as an example. Real Talk NY reports:

BET: You got some backlash for anti-gay lyrics and you gave a statement to the Huffington Post. Do you regret using the word “f*****”?

No, not at all. It’s much different than the autism thing, it wasn’t conscious; that was a slip-up, being offensive without intent. The line was to engage the conversation of homophobia in Black culture and in hip hop. I thought it was going to be a way more interesting conversation that came from it. Of course I made the statement, but I thought from that it would spawn better conversations like, “Why are we so homophobic?”

BET: You’ve talked about including dark-skinned women in your music videos versus all light-skinned women. The light-skinned, dark-skinned issue certainly affects women in hip hop; does it affect men in hip hop?

I can’t say it for sure but I just think we’re still in America. We’re still Black Americans. Those mental chains are still in us. That brainwashing that tells us that light skin is better, it’s subconsciously in us, whether we know it or not… still pursuing light skin women. There are some women out there that are like, “I don’t even like light skin men” and that’s fine. But Barack Obama would not be President if he were dark skin. You know what I mean? That’s just the truth. I might not be as successful as I am now if I was dark skin. I’m not saying that for sure, I’m still as talented as I am and Obama is still as smart as he is, but it’s just a sad truth… I don’t even know if this is going to translate well into text and people not hearing what I’m saying, but it’s a sad reality. So I can only naturally assume it’s probably easier for a light skin male rapper than it might be for a dark skin male rapper. It’s all subconscious s***, nobody’s aware — I think that s*** still subconsciously affects us.

TMZ reports:

TMZ broke the story…2 Chainz’ tour bus was pulled over in OKC around midnight after police noticed its taillights were out. When they approached the vehicle, cops say they noticed signs of drug use and attempted to board the bus.

But the bus driver locked the police out, insisting they obtain a warrant first.

Police did just that and eventually entered the bus hours later, where they arrested 11 passengers for “interfering with the police process,” including 2 Chainz.

It’s unclear if they face additional charges, or whether police found drugs.

DMX Arrested For Marijuana Possession In South Carolina

From CNN:

Rapper DMX had another run-in with police in South Carolina this week, ending with a citation for marijuana possession.

The arrest in Greer, South Carolina, comes four weeks after he was charged with drunken driving in Greenville, just one town away.

DMX — whose real name is Earl Simmons — was a passenger in a Ford F-350 truck stopped by police for allegedly making an improper lane change Tuesday night, according to the police report.

The police report said the officer immediately recognized Simmons, 42, and knew that there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in court for a previous charge.

The officer reported seeing “a bag of green plant material I knew to be marijuana” on the passenger door where Simmons was sitting. The rapper denied it was his and then told police he “had breathing trouble.”

“At this point, Mr. Simmons became very aggressive with his words and was making multiple idle threats,” the police report said. “The smell of alcohol coming from his person became very strong.”

Simmons was placed under arrest for the warrant and also cited for simple possession of marijuana. He was booked into the Greer jail, but released on bail hours later, a police spokesman said.
Hip-hop highs: Long on lyrics, short on rehab

The artist’s publicist defended DMX in a written statement to CNN Wednesday.

“Although officers pulled them over for a minor traffic violation, DMX was asked to step outside so they can search the vehicle,” Domenick Nati said. “Officers then claimed that they found bags of marijuana in the floorboard and arrested X. No drugs were found on DMX or the other passengers and the alleged bags of marijuana were never shown to DMX or the other passengers.”

Anitra Rhodes, 39, was charged with improper lane change and simple possession of marijuana after three bags of suspected marijuana were found under the driver’s seat, the police report said. Nati said Rhodes is DMX’s assistant.

Curren$y Was Apparently Too High To Attend Wiz Khalifa’s Wedding

From TMZ:

They say weed can make you forget things … like when your REALLY good friend is getting married — just ask rapper Curren$y who blew off Wiz Khalifa’s nuptials because he was too baked.

Curren$y — a huuuge rapper who’s worked with everyone from Snoop to Lil Wayne, Master P and, most famously, his close friend Wiz Khalifa — was in NY for a hip hop awards show when he dropped a truth bomb about why he wasn’t around when Wiz tied the knot with Amber Rose.

“We were totally like baked and I totally just smoked off my appearance,” Curren$y said … adding, “But he knows it’s love and we definitely spoke and it’s all good.”
