David Peisner interviewed the biggest producer in rap right now for Billboard’s cover story this month. You can read the whole thing here, an excerpt is below.

Will’s first hit came in 2011, on Meek Mill’s high-energy “Tupac Back” (featuring Rick Ross), which reached No. 31 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and No. 21 on the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay chart and has sold 176,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The more he worked, the more Will realized he wanted to be what he calls “a real producer,” not simply a guy hunched over his laptop making beats and then sending them out.

“I started bringing some weird, different beats, and rappers were just like, ‘What the hell is this? You got something else?'” he recalls. “I realized they can’t really rap on that because it’s not sounding like nobody else’s [material].” When he brought Future the beat for “Ain’t No Way Around It,” the rapper wasn’t interested. “I played him that beat 10 times. Every day I went into the studio like, ‘This beat is it!,’ and he was like, ‘Nah, I don’t like it.’ Finally, it was two in the morning and he was like, ‘Bro, you got some beats?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I got that same beat. I’m telling you, put some melody on it. It’s going to be crazy.'”

Usher Wins Courtroom Custody Battle Over Kids (Video)

From USA Today:

Usher and his ex-wife, Tameka Foster Raymond, faced off in an Atlanta courtroom this afternoon. It was an “emergency” hearing called in the wake of this week’s pool accident involving their son, Usher V, 5.

Tameka was asking for the couple’s custody agreement of a year ago to be changed.

Usher’s camp wanted the petition dismissed so that he can retain custody of Usher V and his brother, Naviyd, 4. The children are “thriving,” Usher’s lawyer, John Mayoue, told the court, noting that Usher V is “expected to be discharged on Sunday” from an Atlanta hospital.

After nearly two hours, Usher emerged victorious. The judge ruled to dismiss the petition.

And when it ended, Usher and Tameka hugged.

But the afternoon’s courtroom drama included emotional testimony, with Tameka at one point breaking down after the 911 pool accident call was playing, saying, “The whole scene was chaos!”

She tried to point a finger at Rena Oden, Usher’s aunt who is often with the kids and who was there on Monday when Usher V got his arm stuck in an underwater drain. “I don’t believe she had any control over the kids!” Tameka told the court.

A frustrated Tameka admitted that she doesn’t really know what goes on with her sons. “I don’t know where my children are. I don’t know who my children are with … I don’t know the phone number to the house where they are. I’ve never seen the house. I don’t know a lot.”
