No I.D. talks “Control,” Rick Rubin, Yeezus and more with Complex

Def Jam VP, and noted producer No I.D. talks with Complex about comparisons to Rick Rubin, “Control”, his place in hip-hop, Chicago music and more. Check out the interview here, with an excerpt below.

One of the big records you’ve had recently was Big Sean’s “Control.” What is the story behind that record?
I had a conversation with Sean towards the end of his album. I told him, I felt like he needed to do some straight, hardcore hip-hop records. Sometimes we focus so much on selling records that we leave some artistic points uncovered.

I had this beat. I had actually done it for Jay, right before I let [Sean] hear it. I said, “You should take this beat, I think it would be great for you to show up on one of these beats, forget money, forget everything.”

For a while—I’d say, since Common’s “Ghetto Dreams”—I’ve been on a hip-hop crusade. To try and just bring that energy back that I felt was not present. I just wanted him to show up on one of those beats and then he did a freestyle to it.

He was like, “I’m gonna drop it as a freestyle.” I was like cool. Then he was like, “Yo, I’m gonna get Jay Electronica on it.” I was like, “Okay, cool.” Anyway, that’s where “No I.D. (Freestyle)” comes from, it was a No I.D. beat and he was freestyling. It didn’t have a chorus, it wasn’t intended to be a full song even.

Aaron Hernandez Was Apparently A Drug Addict & Real Life Gangster, According To Rolling Stone

From SI:

Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was a frequent user of angel dust and carried a gun with him at all times because he was paranoid, according to a new story in Rolling Stone.

“The Gangster in the Huddle,” published online Wednesday and in the next issue of the magazine, details Hernandez’s transformation from high school football star to alleged murderer.

Among the revelations in the story: Hernandez hung around with a cohort of gangsters, cut himself off from his family and teammates and regularly used drugs. The report, citing friends of his family, says he sometimes smoked “three or four blunts” during the drive home from games. He also started carrying a rifle in his gym bag because he worried his gangster friends might be trying to kill him. The Rolling Stone story says the tight end flew to the NFL Combine in February and told Patriots coach Bill Belichick he thought his life was in danger.

Hernandez had reportedly infuriated Belichick over the years with missed practices and thug-life stunts. In March, after Hernandez was involved in an alleged domestic incident, Belichick reportedly threatened to trade or release him after the 2013 season if there were any more disruptions.
