Thieves Steal Almost A Million Dollars Worth Of Jewelry In Atlanta
From AJC:
In about 30 seconds, at least five men smashed their way into a jewelry store case, helping themselves to nearly a million dollars worth of watches.
But it’s what they left behind that may lead to their capture, Atlanta police said Monday.
“This was well-coordinated and thought-out,” Sgt. Greg Lyon said. “They had seconds to commit this and get away.”
And they did get away. Investigators hope the public can offer additional clues to those responsible, Lyon said Monday.
One of the sledgehammers was left on the floor of Mayors Jewelry during the smash-and-grab Friday night at Lenox Square. Within minutes of the heist, the alleged getaway van was located, along with three of the Rolex watches, according to an incident report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
There were footprints and personal items found inside the white 2013 Dodge Caravan, according to police. Investigators hope the T-shirts, tennis shoes, underwear and baseball caps will offer DNA clues to help identify their owners.

Aaron Carter Gets His Ass Kicked By Fans Of New Kids On The Block
I wasn’t even aware that Aaron Carter was still as active performer. From TMZ:
Aaron, who posted some gnarly selfies after the fight, tells TMZ he was leaving dinner with a friend last night in beantown, when a huge guy approached him in the parking lot and yelled: “I heard you’re doing a show here tomorrow. This is the town of the New Kids.”
Aaron claims three other guys then jumped out of a gold Chevy Malibu … and started the beat down, which came complete with a shot to his face.
The singer claims he landed a few punches before the NKOTB-lovers took off — “I think my knuckles might be broken, but that’s what they get. People think I’m a pretty little white boy but no way. I think I won. I’m still standing.”
Aaron says he’s performing as scheduled tonight, and he’s not filing a police report because it’s “girlie.”
President Vladimir Putin: “Snowden Is In Transit Area Of Moscow Airport”
From USA Today:
The United States appeared no closer Tuesday to getting back U.S. spy leaker Edward Snowden, who remains in Russia trying to win political asylum and protection from a U.S. extradition request on charges of espionage.
Russian President Vladimir Putin cleared up the mystery of where exactly Snowden is amid reports in Russian media claiming he had been whisked to an Ecuadorean embassy.
Putin announced that Snowden is in the transit area of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, and he said that Russia would not hand him over to the United States, with whom it does not have an extradition agreement.
Putin, who was speaking while on a visit to Finland, said that Russian security agencies “didn’t work and aren’t working” with Snowden. He said Snowden has not crossed the border officially into Russia and is free to go anywhere.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov rejected statements from the Obama administration that Russia must hand over Snowden as the USA has done often for Russia’s wanted fugitives.
“We consider as absolutely unfounded and unacceptable the attempts we are seeing to accuse Russia of violating U.S. law and almost of conspiracy, accompanied by threats against us,” he said. “There is no lawful basis for this kind of behavior from American officials.” he said.

Woman Killed by Runaway Shopping Cart In China (Video)
I really wasn’t even sure if this was even real or not…a horrific video has emerged of a grandmother being killed by a runaway supermarket trolley. The accident, which was caught on CCTV, happened on Friday morning at Lianhua supermarket in Shanghai.
The 60-year-old, who was shopping alone, died from horrific injuries after being hit by the metal trolley at the Chinese store.
In the video, the woman, wearing pink, is seen pushing her trolley down a flat escalator.
She reaches the bottom and calmly pushes it off before walking ahead.
But seconds later a trolley is seen speeding down the escalator behind her.
A sound must have alerted the woman as she is seen looking behind her in the split-second before she is hit.
The overloaded trolley smashes into the shopper, throwing her against a pillar six to seven metres away.
A few seconds later, two panicked men can be seen running down the escalator to help the woman, followed closely by another bystander.
A crowd amasses around the fatally injured woman, with people picking off debris as they try to reach her.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to her horrific injuries.
According to a report on Stomp and QQ two men had loaded a trolley of their own with 15 crates of drinks, instead of using a supermarket trolley – store trolleys are adapted to lock onto the ridges on the escalator.
Police are currently investigating the incident.

Fat Joe Gets Sentenced To Four Months In NJ For Tax Troubles
From the Associated Press:
NEWARK, N.J. — The former chart-topping rap star known as “Fat Joe” was sentenced to four months in prison Monday over his earlier admission that he failed to file federal income taxes for two years.
The platinum-selling artist, whose real name is Joseph Cartagena, apologized to his family and supporters during his sentencing Monday in federal court in Newark, N.J.
The 42-year-old resident of Miami Beach, Fla., and Tenafly, N.J., pleaded guilty in December to failing to pay taxes on more than $1 million of income in 2007 and in 2008.
U.S. Magistrate Cathy Waldor said she took into account for sentencing the government’s allegation that Cartagena failed to pay taxes on some $3 million in income for the years 2007 through 2010. Federal prosecutors said the total tax loss to the government for those four years was $718,038.
The case was prosecuted in New Jersey because some of the companies he earns money from; including his Somerville, N.J.-based Terror Squad Production Inc., and Miramar Music Touring Inc., are incorporated in the state. He also earned income from FJTS Corp., during the time in question.
In a courtroom packed with family members and supporters, Cartagena looked fit and considerably slimmer than the size that had earned him his rap moniker. He has been very public about his efforts to shed weight after fellow rap stars died from obesity-related issues, and has spoken to schoolchildren, in New Jersey and elsewhere about the importance of health and fitness.
Apologizing to the court and his family and supporters, Cartagena spoke of growing up in a housing project in the Bronx in New York City surrounded by guns, drugs and “violence all around.”
“I did everything I could to achieve what I could, to move my family; I tried to stay positive, focus on the positive, and get myself out,” he said. He spoke of how many family members he supported and how he tried to give back to his community.
“I guess I’m surprised, caused I worked so hard to not end up in court, that I’m here,” he said. “This is the last place I thought I would be.”
The rapper once topped the Billboard 100 chart with hits like the duet “What’s Luv” with the R&B singer Ashanti. He said he had recently signed a record deal in hopes of making money to pay back his arrears.
Defense Attorney Jeffrey Lichtman said outside federal court that Cartagena had liquidated his retirement account to start paying the money back.
In addition to the prison term, Cartagena was sentenced to one year of supervised release and fined $15,000. He must report to prison by Aug. 26.
The federal courthouse in Newark has recently been the setting for several tax cases involving well-known musicians.
The Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill was sentenced in May to three months in prison for failing to pay about $1 million in taxes over the past decade. Two sons of the founders of the Sugar Hill Records hip-hop recording label were sentenced in May to probation for failing to file taxes.
