Kendrick Lamar Speaks On Snoop’s ‘Doggystyle’

snoop-dogg-doggystyle-front

XXL allowed Kendrick Lamar (who is an outspoken fan of his predecessor) to give his “review” of Snoop Dogg’s classic debut album. Check it out below.

I was coming from the skating rink when I [first heard] Doggystyle. It’s funny I remember these things. My auntie’s boyfriend was playing it while he was driving. My auntie said, “I thought you didn’t like Snoop Dogg.” And he replied, “I had to hear it a few times.” Little did I know he was just hatin’ because he was from the opposite hood.

I actually listened to it when I was 6. Believe me, when you’re from Compton, Long Beach, Watts, South Central, Inglewood…that’s all they were playing around you as a kid. I couldn’t escape it. I remember seeing Snoop Dogg on this video station called The Box. Somebody kept ordering “Ain’t Nothing But A G Thang.” I watched videos a lot, so I was familiar with him.

My favorite records are “G Funk Intro,” “Tha Shiznit,” “Pump Pump,” “Gz And Hustlas”… One of my favorite lyrics from the album is, “You’s flea and I’m the big dog/I’ll scratch you off my balls with my muthafuckin’ paws,” from “Doggy Dogg World.” It wasn’t the most complex line, but at the time, that’s all a 7-year-old could catch. I thought it was hard.

I’m definitely influenced by that album. The structure. The cohesiveness. The skits. The flow. The melodies Snoop kicked. The raw raps. There wouldn’t be a Kendrick Lamar without Doggystyle. [What stood out about the album] was its sound. Albums that last that long have their own sound. It was nothing duplicated, that’s why it stood out. It was that G-Funk.
I listen to it every two to three plane rides a song or two rotates in my iPhone. That fact that we still discussing it 20 years later says everything about it. –Kendrick Lamar

LIVE STREAM: Manny Pacquiao Vs. Brandon Rios

Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios Tour Beijing

Head to the next page for your live stream options (below).

Manny Pacquiao and Brandon Rios will meet tonight on HBO pay-per-view to do battle in a welterweight bout. It’s a fight that should provide tremendous action while also giving a glimpse into the future of Pacquiao.

The night’s pay-per-view card gets going at 9 p.m. ET and can be purchased through any cable or satellite provider as well as Top Rank’s live streaming internet pay-per-view. There is also a streaming undercard for free that will kick off some time around 7 p.m. ET.

Pacquiao remains a solid favorite, coming in most places between -400 and -500 while Rios is in the +350 range as an underdog. Those odds make sense given both men’s history, but the Rios upset could be in play if Juan Manuel Marquez’s thudding KO of Pacquiao was the blow that more or less put an end to Manny’s time at the top of the sport. – SB Nation

UPDATE: Derrick Rose Injures Right Knee; Out Indefinitely

UPDATE: The Bulls announced on Saturday that subsequent examinations and an MRI confirmed a medial meniscus tear to Derrick Rose’s right knee, which will require surgery.

He is out indefinitely, and will not accompany the team on the rest of its current road trip. (Chicago Tribune)

ESPN Reports:

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, who missed all of last season while recovering from reconstructive surgery to his left knee, injured his right knee during the third quarter of Friday night’s 98-95 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers and did not return.

The 2011 NBA MVP was taken to the locker room at the end of the third quarter, putting barely any weight on the injured leg. Following the game, he left the trainer’s room on crutches and appeared to be in considerable pain. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Rose will have an MRI on the knee Saturday in Los Angeles after flying there with the team. Rose was not made available to the media for comment. Rose tore the ACL in his left knee in April 2012.

Miley Cyrus’ House Was Broken Into On Her Birthday

TMZ Reports:

Miley Cyrus was given the worst birthday gift ever this weekend … her house was broken into and her stuff got jacked.

The break-in occurred Friday afternoon in Studio City when the thief somehow gained access to Miley’s pad … and made off with some jewelry.

It’s unclear how the crook (or crooks) got inside the house … but cops say they’re currently investigating how it all went down.

Thankfully Miley wasn’t home when the break-in happened — and neither was anybody else.

Kim Kardashian & Kanye West May Film Wedding For Television

Screen Shot 2013-11-23 at 3.27.40 PM

Us Weekly reports:

Sources tell Us Weekly in its Dec. 2 issue that the parents to 5-month-old North West are (surprise!) mulling over the idea to televise their nuptials.

“If they choose to film the wedding, it will be filmed by them, not a TV crew,” an insider reveals to Us. “And they’d sell it to a network.”

A source tells Us the the couple of two years will have a “magnificent” wedding yet (believe it or not!) “on the small side.”

Kardashian is, of course, no stranger to publicly declaring her vows for the world to see. In August 2011, the reality star said “I do” to NBA player Kris Humphries in an extravagant $10 million ceremony in Montecito, Calif. After just 72 days of marriage, Kardashian filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.” The divorce was finalized in June 2013.

Snoop Dogg On Doggystyle’s 20th Anniversary

Music News

Snoop Dogg’s debut album hit stores 20 years ago today; the rapper sat down with MTV and reflected on his debut album, creating the tracks and revealed that he had never listened to it the album all the way through.

“I don’t believe I’ve ever listened to the whole album and I’m being honest with you. I ain’t never listen to Doggystyle top to bottom. I may have listened to songs, but I’ve never listened to it.”

Back then it meant a lot because it was being able to stand on my own two feet and put out a project for the first and to actually be heard and seen for who I am individually. Now what it means, it’s an accomplishment. Looking back at it, it was very well put together, it was standards, it showed me the way to do it, the only way to do it.

Murder Was the Case‘ that was kinda hard because I started writing on another beat and I was writing a different kinda story. And then once Dre gave me that beat the story came to life and it was like I’m writing a story about me making a deal with the Devil, me going to jail. These things didn’t even happen to me, then I’m writing about ‘em and slowly but surely those things began to happen to me.”
