DJ Quicksilva & Young Guru At Cafe Asia This Saturday

Click the image to RSVP.
Now here’s a hell of a “matchup”: a local legend in his own right matching turntables with who might quite possibly be the number one engineer in Hip-Hop? Sounds like a win for the crowd to me…
In one corner, we have DJ Quicksilva, a DC/Baltimore area DJ that’s been doing big things in radio for over 10 years, working with the likes of one of DC’s biggest urban radio stations (WKYS) and premiere urban fashion entity DTLR (aka Downtown Locker Room). This doesn’t even include the various clubs and lounges he’s had locked down in the nation’s capital and around the world.
In the other corner, we have the man responsible for mixing a lot of of Roc-A-Fella Records catalog since the turn of the century: Young Guru went from being an independent engineer to being the key head at the legendary Bassline Studios (and later Roc The Mic Studios) after a few chance encounters working with Jay-Z’s right hand man Memphis Bleek. This naturally led to him becoming Hova’s very own engineer and DJ. Needless to say, his extensive resume of projects worked on are nothing short of Hall of Fame…
…and he will be rocking the crowd in DC for the first time ever this Saturday.
Who will rock the crowd the hardest? Only one way to find out, but one thing is definitely for sure: whoever comes to this event can’t lose either way. Don’t get caught missing out.

Hov’s Roll outlined with The New Jersey Nets According to GM

The New Jersey Nets general manager Billy King revealed that Jay-Z plays an active role in team decisions. As part owner of the franchise, Hov was noted for showing his passion in the boardroom.

“I think a lot of those so-called guys that have parts of teams, they vanish,” said King at his end-of-season press conference on Wednesday. “There was one in Cleveland, what was his name? Usher. They haven’t seen him. I think Nelly in (Charlotte) — haven’t seen him. But Jay-Z, I think players see that it’s more of a passion for him, not just something he’s involved in.”

King also says the rap mogul determined to bring the Nets to his hometown.

“To see [Jay-Z] give a pitch on Brooklyn, and the passion about going to Brooklyn – you see it on tape, you see it on TV. To see him in a room with Carmelo, and making it, you see the passion there,” King said. “And if he’s as passionate about Brooklyn, I just can’t imagine what the other people that live there are going to be like when we get there. And to see him as involved and as passionate about the Nets, to me, it’s a real positive. It’s not just something that he’s just using, or investing in. It’s something that he’s going to be involved in even more when we get – next season, I think, even further, we go to Brooklyn.”

Jay has been a Nets part owner since 2004.

Foto DC Flash ([DC Area] Hip-Hop Photography Exhibit)

This is pretty cool. Unfortunately today was the last day of the exhibition. From Sidney Thomas (the author of Diamonds In The Raw):

While I was doing research for my book, Diamonds In The Raw, I took over 7000 photographs at various venues around the city. I organized some of these photographs into a collection entitled Inner City Rhythms and submitted them to a panel of experts at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The advisory panel reviewed the portfolios of over 280 photographers and I was among 30 selected to exhibit their work (2 to 6 images each) at the FOTO DC “FLASH” exhibit in Crystal City.

My collection consists of photographs of local hip-hop and go-go artists. The location of the FOTO DC “FLASH” exhibition is 2450 Crystal Drive 12th and 13th Floor Penthouse – Crystal City, VA (Arlington, VA). The exhibit lasts from March 18 – April 18, 2011. They have a bar that serves wine & beer, and on weekend evenings a DJ will perform. There will also be special events held in conjunction with FOTO DC which you can find out about by going to their website (www.fotoweekdc.org).
