Update:
The physical edition of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s joint LP Watch the Throne is out now. According to MTV, the duo have just opened a pop-up boutique in lower Manhattan (201 Mulberry Street to be exact), where they’ll be selling copies of the album between now and Sunday. It’s the place wrapped in Watch the Throne wallpaper and which has the tricked-out Maybach from the “Otis” video parked inside. You can’t miss it!
MTV also reports that Hov may be making an appearance at the store tonight, which means it’s going to be crowded as fuck. Have fun.

MORE #WTT F**KERY

There are whispers going around the industry that the sales strategy adopted by Kanye, Jay-Z together with the label which gives iTunes a 4 day exclusive window of Watch The Throne‘s release and thereafter physical edition at Best Buy from August 12th onwards, is prone to instances of multi-scanning for sales purposes.

HDD reports that some Indie retailers, who are already unhappy with the sales plan, are planning to buy copies of the CD from Best Buy in bulk, in order to further sell them at their own stores. And if the particular store is weighted by Soundscan, it could lead to multiple scanning for only one physical disc passed to the consumer.

A similar situation occurred in 2007 when The Eagles released their Walmart-only albumLong Road Out of Eden and industry experts projected significant double sales at some stores who bought the albums from Walmart and re-sold at their own shops.

#WTT Artwork info Watch The Throne, Artwork Designed by Riccardo Tisci

The House of Givenchy is pleased to announce that Riccardo Tisci designed all artwork featured in JAY-Z and Kanye West’s newest album to be released worldwide in August 2011.
After designing the cover for the album’s first outing, ‘H.A.M’, in 2010, Riccardo Tisci chose to create this new artwork to celebrate one of the biggest joint efforts in music history.
The artwork’s bold colours and angular lines are symbols of masculinity for two of the most iconic rap figures of our time. Riccardo Tisci naturally incorporates references to his long time signature codes, from meticulously engineered prints to blurred religious images, the strength of these visuals being to bring his Couture techniques and vision to image printing. Therefore, the ‘Watch the Throne’ cover seems to be embroidered while the inside artwork looks painted and printed.
Other symbols are featured, such as architecture and layering, raw materials and animal faces, symmetric shapes combined with bold prints or American obsessions, all part of Riccardo Tisci’s aesthetics, translated to the music world.
I am honoured to have been asked to be part of this incredible music moment with such amazing artists. I am impressed by the amount of respect they have for music and art. We share the same way of working : like a family. Riccardo Tisci
By designing the artwork for JAY-Z and Kanye West’s first collaborative album, Riccardo Tisci wanted to channel America’s most traditional value : Respect.

Frank Ocean X FADER

Frank Ocean get his first cover story with FADER.

When he was nine, Frank Ocean’s godfather subscribed him to Robb Report, a magazine for the ultra-rich. Less interested in fiduciary smarts, it’s a catalog of conspicuous consumption, highlighting tropical vacations, invaluable antiques and, as Ocean came to know, really expensive cars. Though he comes from a middle class family, he obsessively read the magazine’s classified ads, fixating on exorbitantly priced used Bentleys and Maybachs. “I would just fall in love with all their cars. That was the start.” Ocean, whowas born Christopher Breaux (and goes by Lonny to friends), downscaled his material desires, and when he was 13, began going door-to-door, detailing cars for cash. “I would bring all my supplies. Literally, it was like a movie, I had a wagon, those long red wagons, like a Radio Flyer-type wagon, and I used to buy my own soaps.”
