Drake Speaks On Kendrick’s ‘Control’ verse

drake-billboard

Drake has broken his silence about the “Control” verse in a sit down interview with Billboard; he said that he “went about my day, went and got dinner and kept it moving” after he heard the “Control” verse. You can read except below.

“I didn’t really have anything to say about it,” Drake says of the verse, which has so far inspired responses from A$AP Rocky, Joey Bada$$, former Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson and too many others to count. “It just sounded like an ambitious thought to me. That’s all it was. I know good and well that Kendrick’s not murdering me, at all, in any platform. So when that day presents itself, I guess we can revisit the topic.”

The full cover story appears in the latest Billboard issue which you can buy it here.

Lamar Odom Arrested For DUI

22784398-506

From ESPN:

NBA veteran Lamar Odom was arrested early Friday on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to police.

Odom was taken into custody at 3:54 a.m. local time after he was spotted driving “in a serpentine manner at 50 mph” on the 101 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley, the California Highway Patrol report said.

The police report stated that Odom continued to drive when authorities tried to pull him over before he eventually stopped. Odom showed “objective signs of intoxication and was unable to perform field sobriety tests as explained and demonstrated,” the CHP report said. At the Van Nuys jail, Odom refused all chemical tests and was booked without incident at 5:01 a.m., CHP officials said.

Multiple media outlets reported Odom’s arrest earlier Friday.

Odom made headlines earlier this week for alleged drug use. A source told ESPN that Odom was staying at a Los Angeles hotel and friends were trying to help him deal with a drug problem. TMZ had reported that he was missing for 72 hours after a fight with his wife, Khloe Kardashian Odom. Odom’s agent refuted a TMZ report Sunday.

Odom spent last season with the Los Angeles Clippers and has been pursued in free agency this summer by the Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers.

No federal challenge to Marijuana legalization in Colorado, Washington

This is big news in the push for legalizing weed, according to CNN;

The Justice Department said it won’t challenge state laws that legalize marijuana and will focus federal enforcement on serious trafficking cases and keeping the drug away from children.

Attorney General Eric Holder, in a conference call Thursday morning, notified the governors of Colorado and Washington that the department, for now, will not seek to pre-empt those states’ laws, which followed voters’ approval of ballot measures that legalized recreational marijuana use.

Marijuana will remain illegal under the federal Controlled Substances Act. But a department memo to federal prosecutors tightened federal marijuana prosecution standards.

Aaron Hernandez Was Apparently A Drug Addict & Real Life Gangster, According To Rolling Stone

0627_aaron-hernandez

From SI:

Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was a frequent user of angel dust and carried a gun with him at all times because he was paranoid, according to a new story in Rolling Stone.

“The Gangster in the Huddle,” published online Wednesday and in the next issue of the magazine, details Hernandez’s transformation from high school football star to alleged murderer.

Among the revelations in the story: Hernandez hung around with a cohort of gangsters, cut himself off from his family and teammates and regularly used drugs. The report, citing friends of his family, says he sometimes smoked “three or four blunts” during the drive home from games. He also started carrying a rifle in his gym bag because he worried his gangster friends might be trying to kill him. The Rolling Stone story says the tight end flew to the NFL Combine in February and told Patriots coach Bill Belichick he thought his life was in danger.

Hernandez had reportedly infuriated Belichick over the years with missed practices and thug-life stunts. In March, after Hernandez was involved in an alleged domestic incident, Belichick reportedly threatened to trade or release him after the 2013 season if there were any more disruptions.

Black Women Furious At Juicy J’s $50K Twerkin’ Scholarship

Eurweb Reports:

It has been confirmed that rapper Juicy J (Three 6 Mafia) is offering a $50K scholarship to the winner of a … wait for it … twerkin’ contest.

No, this is not a typo.

Fifty thousand big ones will be handed over to the best, ugh, “twerker” and as you may have guessed, this is not going over too well with what we think may turn out to be many of the female persuasion.

Seeka tha Teacha, head of the Hip Hop Liberation Army along with colleagues Abena Afreeka and Sis Tricey are too pissed off and are calling for a boycott of the rapper’s CD. Appearing on the weekly rap program, “Militant Minded Radio,” they presented a lively discussion on this display of what can be called a byproduct of misogynistic thinking. We ask for your forgiveness in advance as the speaker’s did not identify themselves so we had to play a guessing game.

“There’s no honor in getting a scholarship for shaking your behind….I think its degrading,” says one of the women we think may be Seeka Tha Teacha, a mother. “Why would you want to get a scholarship for that when there’s a lot of intelligent women out here who use their brain. Why don’t you give them some money,” she continues, adding that she would never want her daughter doing anything like that.

“I know Juicy J [is] probably sittin’ back laughing at all the women that’s gonna come and shake they ass for this money. It’s all a game,” she continues.

“I think that this contest is only symptomatic, and that any discussion about this that ignores the larger picture of the systematic sexploitation, objectification of Black women is basically an incomplete discussion,” says Sis Tricey. She equates Juicy J to someone who is “embracing that cooning buck,” a brother who will promote “the exploitation of himself, his sisters and brothers” for money.

“You can think of the situation…when the 12-year-old sits up and tells his math teacher, ‘I make more in a day then you make in a whole year,” she concludes.

And apparently, the scholarship is only the beginning; a CD is set to follow.

“Is this going to be a trend?” Sis Tricey suggests adding a truly frightening scenario. “Are we going to have more rappers throwing in and saying ‘hey, we’re doing some positive things for the school.’ How many sisters will even want to continue to go to school once they get a taste of that.”

Abeena Afreeka states, ”As women, for starters, I believe it is imperative for us to come out in strong opposition to the CD, to the message, and begin to actively get in the ears of our young sisteren [sic].” She invites not only women, but men as well, to join in with this support against the degradation of Black women; by boycotting the Juicy J CD and the message behind it.

Lamar Odom Isn’t The Only NBA Drug User (Details)

0828-nba-drug-use-article-3TMZ Reports :

Multiple NBA-connected sources tell TMZ … the big problem is that the league is only allowed to test players 4 times during a season. Because testing is randomized, the last test can be administered as early as January, and the season lasts for months thereafter. As one recently-retired NBA player put it, after the 4th test, “It’s like Christmas Day. We can take whatever we want.”

One NBA-connected source says pot is “ubiquitous” in the sport. The source adds, however, that most athletes who indulge do so in moderation so it doesn’t have a perceptible impact on their performance. An NBA rep tells us … weed is not only prevalent, it’s hardly hidden — he says the hotel rooms where the players stay, and even the halls, have the telltale smell.

The players we’ve spoken with all agree … pot is prevalent. But some of the players say Lean — Sprite and Codeine cough syrup — has become a recreational drug of choice during the season. One player said it was even used during the recent playoffs.

One current and famous player tells TMZ, he estimates 30% of his fellow NBAers use hard drugs — including Molly, Ecstasy, and Lean — at some point during the season. He says he’s never been aware of anyone doing cocaine during the season.

Another current and famous player tells us he estimates only 10% of NBA players use hard drugs, and no one uses cocaine during the season — it’s too risky. He also says Lean is a drug of choice.

An NBA source agrees — he estimates 10-15% of the players use hard drugs during the season.

One NBA insider believes the drug use problem has gotten better over the last 5 years because of social media. He says players have been burned because pictures of them doing things they shouldn’t be show up on Instagram and Facebook, and it’s inhibited them.

Kylie Jenner Involved In Her First Car Accident

Kylie-Jenner-throws-official-Sweet-16-party-Drake-makes-surpise-appearanceTMZ Reports:

She’s only been on the road for 18 days, but Kylie Jenner already has a 3-car chain reaction collision under her belt … TMZ has learned.

16-year-old Kylie — driving her brand new $125k Mercedes SUV — was driving in Calabasas yesterday around 5pm when she slammed into the back of a Toyota, which slammed into the back of a Subaru SUV.

The Toyota suffered major damage to the back-end of the car (you can see the back bumper stuck in Kylie’s front grille). The Subaru also suffered bumper damage.

We spoke to a witness who says Kylie immediately got out of her car — apologized — and asked if everyone was OK.  She eventually exchanged info with the other drivers and left.

Cops arrived to the scene a short time later, but Kylie was already gone.

We’re told it didn’t appear anyone suffered any serious injuries … and everyone involved in the crash acted very cordial toward each other.

Kylie turned 16 on August 10 … and was first spotted behind the wheel of the SUV at her Sweet 16 party on August 17.

Hopefully, the Jenner family has good insurance …

J. Cole To Produce Wale’s Next Album?

Mark Pitts, Greenhouse And J.Rose Annual BET Post Party

In J. Cole’s Vibe interview, he said he might produce Wale’s next album while they’re on tour. Read an excerpt from the interview below:

You’ve been working with TLC for your next single, “Crooked Smile.” What do you think about how they’re depicted in the promos for their VH1 biopic?
It’s crazy, it was scary how good they look, how close they look. I was thinking, “Lil’ Mama? How is she going to be Left-Eye?” Then I seen it and she was, like, spitting image. It was amazing.

Your What Dreams May Come tourmate Wale says he wants you to produce half of his next album. Is that something that you two have discussed?
We’ve talked about that for years. It’s just about timing. Since we’re going on tour together I don’t see why that can’t happen. Wale is somebody that I want to see win all the time. All the times he wins I get happy because I know what he’s been through. With “Let Nas Down” I’m kind of pulling the curtains, showing you how the industry was working, which helps it not have to work like that anymore. Because people wise up and they know better. But in order to get to that you have to have guinea pigs. You had to have people that were victims of the way the system worked. To me Wale was a guinea pig that I got to watch firsthand because when I got signed he was about to put out his first album and I saw the way Jimmy Iovine and Interscope did him. No disrespect to them but it was the system at the time. So every time he wins I get happy because I know what he was up against. I went through a similar thing, but I made it through, and nobody should have to go through those things anymore. Nobody that’s a real artist should ever have to got through that because the curtain’s been pulled.

J. Cole Reveals Sha Money XL Wanted 50 Cent To Sign Him

vibe-jcole-born-sinnerJ. Cole sat down with Vibe  and he talked about being at 50′s house in Connecticut years ago where he met Sha Money XL, Tony Yayo and others. He also reveals that Sha Money XL played  some of his music for  50 Cent  but he passed on him ( he  thought he was “one of these skinny jeans ni**as”).

Sha Money XL told me once that he brought you to 50 Cent before you signed with Roc Nation. What do you remember about first meeting him?
I didn’t meet 50 when Sha was trying to introduce me, but there’s a crazy story. I was unsigned and my name was starting to get around the industry. I took a meeting with Paul Rosenberg and a meeting with Mark Pitts, but my stuff hadn’t got to Jay Z yet. Nobody was making a move. “Lights Please” and “Lost Ones” were making their rounds, but it wasn’t no real action yet. I ended up in Connecticut at 50’s crib and he wasn’t home that night but people was still in his crib.

Were Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks around?
Yayo, Sha Money and a couple other people were there, but Banks wasn’t that night. Yayo was going nuts, like, “Son!” When I see Tony Yayo today we still talk about that. It was a crazy night. After that, Sha Money was trying to fuck with me heavy. He was like “Son, look, I’m playing 50 your shit.” Supposedly the story is that he played 50 my shit and 50 wasn’t sure. Like, “I don’t know, man. Is he one of these skinny jeans niggas?” He couldn’t see it, but it was a good time in my life. It was brand new, fresh. Being in that crib was amazing.

J. Cole also speaks on recording with 50 for ‘NY Times’ and how he wanted Nas on the same song but didn’t work out.

Fast forward five years and you feature 50 on “New York Times,” off of Truly Yours 3. How did that track come about?
I made that song and didn’t write the hook, I just did the melody. On the original reference I’m humming the melody, but all I did was steal a 50 Cent melody—some shit I would hear 50 singing. I had that song for a year before the album came out. I was like, “Damn, I’d love to get 50 or Nas on this.” Nas was my original plan but he didn’t get the verse done in time. So we had this other kid from Queens named Bas.

Wow, reuniting 50 and Nas could’ve been huge.
Exactly. For hip-hop, period. But really for New York. I wanted that to be a real New York record. This down South nigga coming and putting on for the city because I have a connection. So 50 came to the studio in L.A. to lay the verse and he heard the melody and he was like, “I could tell you was thinking about me when you were doing that melody.” He wrote that shit in five minutes, maybe. It was crazy to see that melody that was in my head come to life with the actual person who I wanted to do it. He gave us three hours worth of game that night, just talking.

Were both Nas and 50 aware that they’d both be on the same record?
Yeah. I told 50 that night he laid the hook, “I just want to let you know I want to put Nas on this.” He was like, “Yeah that’s cool.” Then I hit Nas and told him I got this joint with 50 on it, and he was like “Cool.” Nobody had a problem with it. I think that they saw the moment was going to be big. I wish he could’ve gotten that verse done, but my nigga Bas is on that, so it’s all good.

Zimmerman Wants Florida To Pay Defense Fees?

Witnesses-in-Zimmerman-trial-testify-on-struggle-cries-gunshot-600x350 4umf Reports:

Zimmerman and his legal team believe they are entitled to the refund because Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder July 13 for having shot and killed Martin, 17.

The shooting in February 2012 sparked a national discussion over racial profiling after Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, said he acted in self-defense.

The motion, to be filed by Zimmerman’s lead attorney, Mark O’Mara, would seek refunds for the hundreds of thousands of dollars the defense spent on fees for expert witnesses and court reporters for depositions, travel and other similar expenses.

The request is expected to be between $200,000 and $300,000, according to Shawn Vincent, a spokesman for Zimmerman’s legal team.

Attorney fees for the defense team, including O’Mara, wouldn’t be part of the motion.

The state Judicial Administrative Commission, which would be responsible for paying out the money if the request is approved, didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment Monday night.

Zimmerman’s request was first reported by The Orlando Sentinel, which quoted O’Mara as saying he would soon file the motion with state Circuit Judge Debra Nelson.

The Sentinel reported that Zimmerman’s request would be based on a Florida law that says a defendant who’s acquitted isn’t liable for costs associated with his or her case. It must be approved by a judge or a clerk.

O’Mara told the newspaper he expects the Judicial Administrative Commission to throw up roadblocks.

“That’s where the fight is,” said O’Mara, who told the paper he’s been paid nothing by Zimmerman but has kept billing records.
