R.I.P. London Dior

From NBC Washington:

A D.C. rapper was among the three people killed in a fiery crash along Suitland Parkway Monday morning.

London Dior, also known as Lundy, was a local rapper who had already gained national attention. Dior’s fans loved her music, her beauty and her voice. Now they are sharing their sorrow on social media with the hashtag #RIPLundy.

Dior, whose birth name was Dasia Lasha’e Redd, and two other people were killed about 4 a.m. Monday in a crash involving a sedan and a Jeep on Suitland Parkway, near the intersection with Forestville Road.

The sedan caught fire, officials said. Authorities said the three people from the car all were pronounced dead at the scene.

The victims were Dior, her boyfriend and another person in the sedan, Dior’s family told News4.

The driver of the Jeep survived but was seriously injured and was taken to a hospital.

Blac Youngsta Turns Himself In Over Young Dolph Shooting

From TMZ:

Blac Youngsta turned himself in to cops investigating a shootout that targeted Young Dolph.

Youngsta and 2 other men surrendered Tuesday in Charlotte after warrants were issued for their arrest. The shooting went down back in February as Dolph was riding to his concert. More than 100 rounds were blasted into his SUV. No one was injured, most likely because the vehicle was heavily armored.

Young Dolph told us back in March … he thought Youngsta was targeting him in a jealous rage. He also said the $300k he dropped to bulletproof his SUV was the best money he’d ever spent.

R.I.P. BTY YoungN

RIP. From XXL:

While speaking to The Advocate about the heartbreaking death of her 27-year-old son, whose real name is Desmone Jerome, his mother, Gabrielle Jerome, said his life was taken over jealousy. “Jealousy is behind it. Because of his success as a rapper,” she explained. While she didn’t speak out on who she specifically believes could be behind the shooting, Jerome kept the focus of the conversation on YoungN’s character as a good person. “He would literally give you the shirt off his back. He loved kids to death. It’s just rough,” she described.

Police says BTY YoungN was killed on Saturday at around 11 p.m. at a Shell gas station on the 9200 block of Airline Highway. Authorities discovered him with multiple bullet wounds, and was pronounced dead on the scene. Police are looking for any leads on the incident, and the rapper’s Facebook page has asked any fans or followers to share leads with the Crime Stoppers of Greater New Orleans.

If you recall, the young MC rose to success after he was signed to Birdman‘s Rich Gang imprint on Cash Money last year following his work with Juvenile for his Cocky & Confident album in 2009.

Howard Theatre Is About To Cut Ties With Its Operator Over Overwhelming Debt

You can read the full story over at the Washington Post:

After five turbulent years, the nonprofit steward of the Howard Theatre is preparing to cut ties with the venue’s operator as the theater struggles to pay down more than a half-million dollars in tax debts and make its rent payments.

Myla Moss, chairwoman of Howard Theatre Restoration, said that she has hired lawyers to terminate the 20-year contract with Howard Theatre Entertainment, which runs the venue. The move could potentially shutter the theater, financed in part with a $12 million contribution from the District government, at least temporarily, while a new operator is sought.

“We are looking to formally move forward to sever our relationship with the current operator,” Moss told The Washington Post, adding that she has not received rent payments for several months. “We tried to work with this operator for five years now. We have given them ample opportunity to retool their strategy to make it a successful venue, and we have not seen a positive result. We can’t possibly sustain this current formula for 20 or more years.”

Moss added that she plans to keep the theater running. “It is our hope that we are not dark at all,” she said.

Spinrilla Fights Back Against Lawsuit

As seen on the Daily Report, where you can read the full story:

An Atlanta music streaming service that promotes itself as “the 800-pound gorilla of free hip-hop mixtapes” contends that, when the nation’s largest recording companies sued it for $3 billion last month, they omitted a key detail: that the recording giants had asked Spinrilla to promote and distribute their music.

Spinrilla and founder Jeffery Dylan Copeland also claim in a formal answer to a copyright suit in federal court in Atlanta that they “have been cooperating for years in a variety of ways” with the major recording labels to remove any unauthorized music that might constitute copyright infringement.

In his first public response to the suit, Copeland also claims that, long before it was filed, Spinrilla “voluntarily took multiple precautions” to block unauthorized music from being streamed on its website or via its free mobile app—and did so with the advice and cooperation of the recording companies that are now suing.

“This cooperation can and should continue as it benefits not only the parties to this lawsuit, but more importantly, it benefits independent artists and their millions of fans,” Spinrilla attorneys David Lilenfeld and Kaitlyn Dalton of Atlanta’s Trusted Counsel said in a formal answer to the complaint.

Kodak Black Turns Down 8 Year Plea Deal (UPDATE)

UPDATE: Looks like the bartender might’ve been lying. Also: Kodak may have a burping problem.

From Local10:

Dieuson Octave, better known as rapper Kodak Black, turned down an a plea deal Wednesday from the state of eight years in prison for an alleged battery and probation violations.

As family and representatives from Atlantic Records looked on in the courtroom as Octave’s probation officer, Sandy Freidman, detailed how the rapper violated his house arrest terms.

“He did not complete anger management, he was thrown out,” Freidman said.

He also went to Ohio without permission.

While on house arrest Octave allegedly went to a strip joint called Club Lexx where a bartender named Jennifer Cunningham said he assaulted her.

“After I pushed him away he started swinging his hands towards me, like he was tying to attack me,” Jennifer Cunningham said. “As he’s trying to attack me, I’m grabbing (his arms) to defend myself.”

She then said Octave kicked her.

Under cross examination ,Cunningham admitted she didn’t see a doctor for her injuries until two weeks after the incident. By that time she’d retained an attorney.

She also said she emailed Octave’s manager threatening to sue the rapper for monetary damages.

Big Flock Drops Single with Rico Nasty, Sentenced to Federal Prison

UPDATE: I’ve added some more information to the post.

Local rap star Big Flock was sentenced to federal prison this past week, for charges dating back to October of 2016, after he was arrested in a joint police and ATF raid of his Prince George’s County Home. Flock plead guilty to possession of a firearm as a felon and possession intent to distribute Alprazolam (Xanax) in December.

Since then, his management has asked people to write letters to the court in hopes of a lesser sentence. Flock, born Charles Bowman-Bey also penned his own open letter to fans, and family, explaining his situation and cautioning those traveling on a similar path in “the streets.”

Early this week, the Department of Justice announced that he will serve 45 months in Federal prison for those charges. Rod J. Rosenstein, the United States Attorney for the District court of Maryland, mentioned Flock’s letter in the release about the sentencing; “Charles Bowman-Bey realized too late that ‘the streets don’t love anybody,’ as he wrote in his letter to the world, apologizing for his life of crime and his music videos glorifying drug dealing and gang violence…His letter should be required reading for young drug dealers.”

While Flock may be away from some time, you can still support him if you like. I’ve embedded the Spotify stream of his new single above. “They Won’t Believe You” was recorded before Flock’s arrest and features fellow Maryland artist Rico Nasty. The song is available on Apple Music/iTunes as well.

Also, for those interested, Mr. Rosenstein is Donald Trump’s pick for assistant Attorney General, under Jeff Sessions, with a vote pending. He has served in his position as US attorney for Maryland since 2005.

Freddie Gibbs Accuses Logic Of Stealing

We’ll make this short: yes, both Freddie Gibbs and Logic’s album covers look like old European paintings. No, we don’t think Logic stole anything (in fact, the person who created Logic’s cover said he’d been working on it for 6 months). We’ll be buying both, but sorry Gibbs — this one’s a reach.

Fetty Wap Reportedly Involved In Robbery Shootout

Uh oh. From TMZ:

Sources close to the situation tell us Fetty had a chain and cash snatched while he was in Paterson, NJ. Law enforcement sources tell us cops were dispatched to Montclair Ave and Paxton Street around 5 AM over a fight with shots fired. Sure enough, they located 2 guys nearby with gunshot wounds — 1 was shot in the leg and another in his torso.

A 3rd man thought to be involved checked himself into Hackensack Medical Center soon after. Fetty is not one of the victims.

Law enforcement tells TMZ an investigation is underway into the shooting, but no robbery has been reported. It’s unclear whether Fetty was directly involved in the shootout.

We’ve reached out to Fetty’s camp … so far, no word back.

Mayor Muriel Bowser Announces New Task Force In Response To Missing Girls

As spotted on WPGC:

Hours after Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted a link to an article entitled “DC’s Missing Teens: What’s True and What’s Not,” she announced that D.C. is devoting more resources to combat the reported epidemic of missing children in the city.

That support is expected to come in the form of police officers assigned to find missing children and establishing a task force to determine what social services teenagers who run away are looking for.

The latter part of that plan will also include increased funding for nonprofits that address teens at risk of running away.

“Often times, these girls are repeat runaways,” mayoral spokemsan Kevin Harris said. “So, if we really want to help solve this problem and bring down the numbers, we have to break the cycle of young people, especially young girls, who repeatedly run away from home.”

Bowser’s action comes in response to increasing calls by celebrities and politicians to address the trend of black and Hispanic girls going missing.

Paul Wall & Baby Bash Cleared Of Drug Charges

From TMZ:

Paul Wall and Baby Bash just caught a huge break in their drug case — a grand jury cut ’em loose.

The panel declined to indict the Houston rappers Tuesday, citing insufficient evidence to convict them in the December drug bust. Paul celebrated his victory with a cigar (weed-free, we think), and told us why he was always confident his attorney would save his ass.

We broke the story … Paul and Baby were arrested in an undercover raid while attending a weed party in Houston. They’d been booked for possession of marijuana and intent to sell, both felonies in Texas. It appeared the case was moving forward a few months ago when the artists told a judge they would test positive for THC.

Like Baby told us, they were just dabbling in dabs and pot at the shindig — and for the grand jury that wasn’t enough to warrant a trial.
