Rick Ross Responds To Kreayshawn

We all heard about Rick Ross lil’ run in with Kreayshawn at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, he’s still not letting up. In his XXL cover story, he calls her a dirty bitch before wanting to smack her handlers.

He even threatens Kreayshawn, the fledgling Bay Area rapper who called Ross “fake” in a recent freestyle. “I cant wait to slap the shit out of whoever carries her bags,” he sneers. “And I hope it’s her nigga. Dirty bitch. You better know the fuck you talking about. I’ll pay 50K to mess up your whole week.”

University of Houston Libraries Acquires DJ Screw’s Records Collection

Pretty cool. Plenty more pictures after the jump. Spotted at Ozone.
The University of Houston Libraries announced Tuesday, a landmark acquisition of rap music, the DJ Screw Sound Recordings Collection. This collection includes more than 1,000 vinyl records owned by the late DJ Screw (Robert Earl Davis Jr., 1971-2000), originator of the “chopped and screwed” genre that helped define the Houston hip-hop sound.

These records, including rare 12”s by Houston, Southern, and West Coast artists, were the foundation of DJ Screw’s highly influential “screw tapes,” self-produced mixtapesof slowed down music. The DJ Screw Sound Recordings Collection is part of a larger project to preserve and make available materials related to Houston hiphop music and culture.

The majority of this collection was donated by DJ Screw’s father, Robert Earl Davis Sr., with additional support from the John and Rebecca Moores Endowed Library Fund.

Currently being cataloged, the collection will be open for use by researchers in 2013. From March 19 – Sept. 21, 2012, selections from the collection will be on display in the M.D. Anderson Library as part of the exhibit DJ Screw and the Rise of Houston Hip Hop. In conjunction with the exhibit, a conference exploring the unique music and culture of Houston hip hop will be held March 27 and 28, 2012, presented jointly by the University of Houston Libraries, the HERE Project at Rice University, African American Studies at the University of Houston, and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston.

CNN On Jay-Z Blueprint 9/11 Release

This Sunday, marks the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and the release of Jay-Z’s sixth album, Blueprint. CNN wrote a piece on the project impact which coincidentally dropped during the tragic terrorist attacks.

“Young people not directly affected are always more removed from the onset of national tragedy,” said Tricia Rose, a professor at Brown University and author of “The Hip Hop Wars. While the much older fans of Mariah Carey or Bob Dylan would likely be too busy and worried about terrorist attacks to rush out and purchase a CD the week of 9/11, Jay-Z’s teen and early 20s fans, already hyped up about this release long beforehand, remained focused on their idol,” Rose said. “And many probably never left the comfort of their bedrooms to download the release. “Hip-hop heads (fans) have a different kind of relationship to music than fans of other genre,” said Sachs, an assistant professor of media technologies and culture at St. Mary’s College of California. “Hip-hop is not just music, it’s a culture, and that mentality permeates many aspects of the lives of hip-hop heads.”

Soulja Boy Attacked For Anti-Army Lyric

“Fuck the FBI and the army troops, fighting for what? Be your own man, I’ll be flying through the clouds with green like I’m Peter Pan.”

Apparently,Soulja Boy’s lyrics from “Let’s Be Real” have ruffled a few feathers. Fred A. Flores, commissioner for the L.A. County Veteran’s Advisory Commission told TMZ the following:

It’s a very offensive statement … especially with the 10th anniversary of 9/11 coming up. He should apologize to ALL armed forces. [The rap] is very irresponsible especially for a person who is an entertainer for the youth of our country.

UPDATE: SB took to Global Grind and apologizes:

As an artist, I let my words get the best of me. Sometimes there are things that we feel, things that we want to express, and when we put them on paper and speak them out loud, they can come out wrong. When I expressed my frustration with the US Army, not only did my words come out wrong, I was wrong to even speak them. So, I write this to give my sincerest apology to all members of the United States military services, as well as their families that were offended by my most recent lyrics. As a young man who grew up in the post-9/11 era, I have watched our country fight two wars that seem like they are never going to end. I have seen thousands and thousands of our brave men and women get killed in battle and often times, I think for what? A lot of people in this country are struggling to make ends meet and I think a lot about what if we had never gone to war. Where would our economy be? Our schools, our after-school and work programs, our streets? I mean, damn, 48 people got shot in New York City just this past weekend … in 3 days … I’m not saying that it is just because of a bad economy, but at a certain point we have to take care of our own people. In no way would I ever want to offend those who are protecting our freedoms … a lot of homeboys who I grew up with, a lot of people who come from the neighborhoods we live in … In no way do I want to hurt any of our honorable soldiers who put their lives at risk, regardless of how they feel about the two wars we fight in. I am just frustrated that we haven’t been able to bring you all home quick enough and my frustration got the best of me. I am deeply sorry.
