PR Executive Under Fire After Africa/AIDS Tweet

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

From NBC News:

An Internet conglomerate said Saturday that it had “parted ways” with one of its public relations executives after a post from her Twitter account said: “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”

The message came from the account of Justine Sacco, the communications director for New York online media conglomerate InterActiveCorp, who was on an international flight to Africa on Friday.

By the time she landed, it had sparked a furor online, including the Twitter hashtag #HasJustineLandedYet. It was the top non-promoted hashtag during her flight, and remained a top trending topic on Twitter on Saturday.

IAC said in a statement Saturday: “The offensive comment does not reflect the views and values of IAC. We take this issue very seriously, and we have parted ways with the employee in question.”

“There is no excuse for the hateful statements that have been made and we condemn them unequivocally,” the statement went on. “We hope, however, that time and action, and the forgiving human spirit, will not result in the wholesale condemnation of an individual who we have otherwise known to be a decent person at core.”

IAC owns Match.com, About.com, Vimeo, OKCupid and the Daily Beast.

Sacco’s Twitter account had been deleted by Saturday.

Tabloid Website Claims That Nelson Mandela Died In June

Nelson Mandela, the former South Africa

Spotted on Lifestyle Tabloids (who appear to have taken the news from Guardian Express). Obviously, none of this is actually confirmed:

Nelson Mandela’s funeral was planned a year ago. The Nelson Mandela family has finally admitted that Nelson Mandela is dead by announcing on December 5th (2013) that the former leader of South Africa is no longer with us.

The charade began in June of 2013, and Guardian Express has maintained Mandela has been deceased since we were informed of his passing in June via one of our reporters embedded in South Africa. That reporter had received a text message from her close friend who works for the South African News which stated that Mandela had died the night prior.

Since June, The Guardian Express has come under attack; first from a “denial of service” attack which shut the site down on and off for three days right after we published the news that Mandela had died. That denial of service attack was traced back to South Africa.

The Guardian Express was also attacked by people denying that the Nelson Mandela family was carrying on a charade. However, we stood by and continue to stand by our account that Mandela was declared permanently brain dead with total organ failure in June of 2013. Now, today, the family has finally decided to give up their charade.

We sent an additional reporter to South Africa who returned with an audio recording of two top government officials confirming the fact that Mandela was totally brain dead and was declared so on June 11. However, his family refused to turn off the life support machines hooked up to his body. Thus, the family could keep him artificially “alive.” Their motive? To settle a huge lawsuit against Mandela’s estate.

It was revealed that Mandela’s family was suing him for control of his estate and since it is impossible to sue a dead person, it seems Mandela had to be kept “alive” with machines until a resolution could be found for the lawsuit. Thus far, there is no word on whether that lawsuit had been settled, but there are already many speculations in the press that this announcement today will begin the battles over the Mandela estate afresh.

The Mandela daughters and granddaughters have shown a good deal of greed when it comes to Mandela’s legacy. It has been reported that their fighting over his money got so bad that Mandela “lost faith” in his daughters and worried that their concern over money was overshadowing their concern for family harmony.

The Mandela funeral was planned a year in advance, according to reports. The funeral date is set for December 14 and there is a comprehensive schedule of events leading up to that date. The Mandela family has finally given up their charade which they have been carrying on since June and have admitted the former South African leader is dead. – The Guardian Express

4 U.S. Troops Hurt In South Sudan Gunfire (Video)

From CNN:

Four U.S. service members were injured when gunfire hit their aircraft during an attempt to evacuate Americans from a violence-hit South Sudanese city Saturday, the Pentagon said.

The troops were trying to land in Bor when gunfire from the ground hit the aircraft, Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said.

“The aircraft diverted to an airfield outside the country and aborted the mission. The injured troops are being treated for their wounds,” Kirby said.

The aircraft went to Nairobi, Kenya, so the wounded could be treated, a senior U.S. official said. Details about their injuries and the troops’ conditions weren’t immediately available.

The evacuation attempt came after days of deadly clashes in South Sudan, including a reported coup attempt in the capital, Juba, last weekend. Bor also has been the site of heavy fighting, the U.S. official said.

The violence prompted the United States and other nations to take steps to protect their citizens. U.S. President Barack Obama had sent 45 service members to South Sudan to support U.S. personnel and the American Embassy; the government of neighboring Kenya said it would send troops to help evacuate 1,600 Kenyan citizens.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir blamed soldiers loyal to his former vice president, Riek Machar, for starting the violence.

Tensions have been high in South Sudan — which became the world’s newest country when it split from Sudan two years ago — since Kiir dismissed Machar and the rest of the Cabinet in July. The move inflamed deep tensions between Kiir’s Dinka community and Machar’s Nuer community.

Casualties are in the hundreds, including soldiers, the government said.

A day before Saturday’s aborted evacuation attempt, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said he was sending a special envoy — Ambassador Donald Booth — to South Sudan.

“Now is the time for South Sudan’s leaders to rein in armed groups under their control, immediately cease attacks on civilians, and end the chain of retributive violence between different ethnic and political groups,” Kerry said in a statement. “The violence must stop, the dialogue must intensify.”

Also on Friday, U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice recorded an audio message to the South Sudanese people.

“I ask each of you to make the choice for peace — make the choice for a unified and cohesive South Sudan,” she said. “Make this choice for yourselves and your children.”
Saturday’s violence wasn’t the first to harm foreign troops in South Sudan this week. Attackers killed two Indian army peacekeepers, wounded a third one in the chest, and killed at least two refuge-seeking civilians in an assault on the United Nations’ Akobo base Thursday, the U.N. said.

As many as 20 of the 30 civilians seeking refuge there might have been killed, U.N. officials estimated.

South Sudan became the world’s newest country in July 2011 when it gained independence from Sudan.

The split happened after a 2005 peace agreement ended years of civil war between the largely Animist and Christian south and the Muslim-dominated north. The deal led to a January 2011 referendum in which people of the south voted to secede from Sudan.

The monkey was a surprise gift from producer Mally Mall … who presented the banana enthusiast to Montana on board his private jet.

We’re told French has been bottle feeding JC … and even slept with him last night.

Janelle Monae To Perform At NFL Owners Super Bowl Party; Eminem & Kanye West Too Expensive

eminem-mtv-ema-2013-performance

I’m in the right industry, wrong field. From TMZ:

Eminem got an offer he COULD refuse — an offer to sing at the NFL Owners Party during Super Bowl week that did not meet his price — $2 MILLION!

Sources connected to the party tell TMZ … reps from the event were looking for a headline act for the party that followed the dinner, which will be attended by 1,500 lucky folks. When Eminem’s agents laid out the financial terms, we’re told the owners group passed.

We’re also told the owners were interested in Kanye … but his fee was too high as well. As one source put it, “It was $1 million, plus plus plus a lot of other perks.”

In the end, we’re told the group settled on Janelle Monae, who’s going for a very reasonable $150K.

There will be a slew of singers performing at various events in NYC during Super Bowl week. We’re told DJs are the big thing … and the big ones are going for between $750K and $1 million.

The Family Of ‘Duck Dynasty’ Refuse To Do The Show Without Phil Robertson

1219-robertson-duck-dynasty-1

Free speech to the front. You can read the full statement from the family below. From TMZ:

The Robertson family just drew a line in the sand with A&E — NO PHIL, NO SHOW … and says they are already talking to the cable channel about possibly pulling the plug on “Duck Dynasty.”

The family issued a statement saying, “As a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty.”

They also say they’re “disappointed” that Phil Robertson was suspended by A&E just for expressing his religious beliefs … which, they point out, is his “constitutionally protected right.”

Fun fact: “Duck Dynasty” is the highest rated cable reality TV show ever.

Way to go A&E.

We want to thank all of you for your prayers and support. The family has spent much time in prayer since learning of A&E’s decision. We want you to know that first and foremost we are a family rooted in our faith in God and our belief that the Bible is His word. While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Phil would never incite or encourage hate.We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. We have had a successful working relationship with A&E but, as a family, we cannot imagine the show going forward without our patriarch at the helm. We are in discussions with A&E to see what that means for the future of Duck Dynasty. Again, thank you for your continued support of our family.

Islamist Extremists Michael Adebolajo & Michael Adebowale Found Guilty Of Murdering Lee Rigby

From the Telegraph:

The family of Lee Rigby broke down today as two Islamist fanatics were found guilty of butchering the soldier on a London street.

A jury found Michael Adebolajo, 29, and Michael Adebowale, 22, guilty of murdering the 25-year-old after they ran him over and hacked him to death in broad daylight.

As they returned their verdicts after just 90 minutes deliberation, Drummer Rigby’s family, who have attended throughout the trial, wept.

In a statement as they left they said: “This has been the toughest time of our lives and no one should have to go through what we have been through as a family.

Mr Justice Sweeney expressed his “gratitude and admiration” to them as he acknowledged it was a case that will “stay with all of us for a long time”.

“They have sat in court with great dignity throughout what must have been the most harrowing of evidence,” the judge said.

It was described as one of the “most savage” cases ever prosecuted by counter terrorism lawyers.

As he was taken down to the cells Adebolajo kissed his Koran.

Mr Rigby was knocked unconscious by a car driven at him from behind as he crossed the road close to his barracks.

Adebolajo leapt from the vehicle and began hacking at his neck with a meat cleaver, virtually decapitating him, as Adebowale repeatedly stabbed him with a kitchen knife.

Adebolajo got one shocked bystander to record his sickening boasts on a mobile phone just seconds after killing the Fusilier, who was just yards from his barracks.

Adebolajo and Adebowale, who are both Muslim converts, then charged at armed police when they arrived at the scene of the bloodbath in Woolwich, south east London, on May 22.

Drummer Rigby’s mother, Lyn, said the killers should never be released while his stepfather Ian has suggested they should be treated the same way he was.

They will be sentenced on a date to be set.

You can check out more on the story, including video showing public reaction to the new banknote, over at BBC:

Plastic banknotes that can survive a spin in the washing machine are to be brought into circulation by the Bank of England in 2016.

The Bank argues that the polymer notes stay cleaner and are more secure than cotton paper notes, which have been used for more than 100 years.

The £5 note featuring Sir Winston Churchill will be the first plastic banknote.

More than 20 countries around the world have adopted polymer banknotes.

Dennis Rodman Returns To North Korea (Video)

(CNN) — Former NBA star Dennis Rodman arrived in North Korea on Thursday, the country’s state-run media reported.

Rodman was there for his latest round of controversial “basketball diplomacy” in a country ruled by one of the world’s most repressive regimes.

The former player and a documentary crew were scheduled to spend four days helping to train a team of North Korean basketball players for a January exhibition in Pyongyang.

That January 8 exhibition — said to be against a yet-unannounced team of former NBA players — will celebrate the birthday of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whom Rodman has called a friend and a “very good guy” despite international condemnation of the country’s human rights records.

Rodman’s trip — sponsored by the online betting company Paddy Power — is the 52-year-old’s third to North Korea.

Rodman said he struck up a friendship with Kim, a basketball fan, during Rodman’s first trip in February. After the two men sat next to each other watching a basketball exhibition in North Korea’s capital, Rodman told Kim that “you have a friend for life.”

Rory Scott, a Paddy Power spokesman, said earlier this month that December’s trip is nonpolitical, but is intended “to prove once again that sport has the power to rise above all issues.”

It’s not clear whether Rodman will meet with Kim on the basketball training visit.

The trip comes at a time of political turmoil in the secretive nuclear-armed nation, ongoing tensions between North Korea and the United States and outcries over North Korea’s human rights record.

Ceiling Collapses At The Apollo Theatre In London; At Least 40 Injured With Reported Casualties

apollo

London (CNN) — A rescue operation was under way Thursday after part of the ceiling in the Apollo Theatre in central London collapsed during a performance, trapping people inside and causing casualties, Metropolitan Police said.

Authorities responded to a report of a ceiling collapse at about 8:15 p.m., police said in a tweet, adding, “We are aware of a number of casualties but we have no further detail at this early stage.”

The Press Association said witnesses saw people emerging from the building covered in dust.

Fire trucks arrived at the theater, which is located next to Picadilly Circus in the heart of the city, though there was no indication of fire.

Paramedics arrived carrying stretchers as police cordoned off the area.

The theater’s website said “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” had been playing,” which it described as “a thrilling new stage play from the National Theatre.”

Ticket prices at the theater, which opened its doors in 1901 and whose 775 seats are arrayed on four levels, included a 1 pound “theatre restoration levy,” the website said.

It is owned and operated by Nimax Theatres.
