Since I am always getting asked by artists to do free videos, I decided to do something interesting. Around this time last summer, bored one night, and stuck at 5,900 twitter followers I came up with a plan. Hold a contest, where the person who could go the hardest and get me over 6k by midnight would get a free video. It was 11:58pm when Jay Electronica retweeted an up and coming NY artist by the name of T.Shirt and told all of his followers to follow me on T.Shirts behalf. Within a minute I was over 6k and I had a winner. Above is what came out of the collaboration. An idea I came up with, something that I could NEVER pitch to a label simply because what executive in their right mind would let their million dollar investment hang upside down for 30 minutes by a piece of rope! Little videos like this one, shot in a friends basement, and with no budget can still be just as powerful and effective as the big budget ones. Most up and coming artists these days can barely put food on their table let alone stunt in a music video. Some are even just as talented as label artists, but dont have the support to create a visual. Im just a kid who loves to shoot, yes this is how I make my living so I need to get paid for my work, but sometimes I also need to just shoot ideas that pop into my head and what better way to do just that than with someone who desperately can use a visual. So I am going to do more of these, hold contests via twitter and offer the same thing every time, a music video. The only catch is, I get to pick the song, and I get to do a concept that has been stuck in my head waiting to get out. Look, it worked for T.Shirt.
