Rick Ross Explains ‘Free Mason’ & Having So Few Tracks On The Album

Hope you’re not tired of coverage on this record. He also spoke to MTV about having a short album:

Rick Ross had a very clear and concise idea of what he wanted to do with his LP Teflon Don. He was inspired in part by some of the all-time classic albums he’s loved throughout his life — Nas’ Illmatic, Bobby Brown’s Don’t Be Cruel, Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Each of those albums kept its track listing at fewer than a dozen songs, but every one of those songs was timeless.

When he was done recording Teflon several weeks ago, Ross brought the idea of only having 11 songs on his LP to Island/Def Jam Chairman L.A. Reid.

“He was like, ‘It’s gotta be the right 11 records if it’s gonna be 11 records,’ ” Ross recalled. “I said, ‘That’s exactly why I’m doing it. It’s only a few artists that for one, would take that chance when it’s common to do 15, 16. We all know that you don’t like the 15, 16, 17. You really like the dope eight or the dope five. Or dope seven.’ I said, ‘Let’s trim the fat off a little bit and give them some rich street music.’ ”

Regardless of whatever side you might be on, I don’t see how one could disagree with that statement. Here are quotes from Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Charles “I didn’t even earn a ring” Barkley:

 
Magic:
“We didn’t think about it cause that’s not what we were about,” said Johnson, whose Michigan State squad beat Bird’s Indiana State team in the 1979 National Collegiate Athletic Association championship. “From college, I was trying to figure out how to beat Larry Bird.”
 
Bird:
“There is no way I would have joined magic or michael and play with them. The only time i ever wanted to play with magic was on the olympic team, and even then our practices were hard, and we beat each other up in practice. So no way magic would have ever played for celtics, or me going to Los Angeles. It hurts even thinking about me being in that yellow jersey”
 
Charles:
“Mike [Jordan] and I are in 100 percent agreement on this. If you’re the two-time defending NBA MVP, you don’t leave anywhere. They come to you. That’s ridiculous. I like LeBron. He’s a great player. But I don’t think in the history of sports you can find a two-time defending MVP leaving to go play with other people.”
