Harry Belafonte Wants To Meet With Jay-Z & Beyonce
Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
I was wondering where the comments that Jay-Z made about Harry Belafonte in a recent interview were coming from……this is what he told the Hollywood Reporter:
THR: Are you happy with the image of members of minorities in Hollywood today?
Belafonte: Not at all. They have not told the history of our people, nothing of who we are. We are still looking. We are not determinated. We are not driven by some technology that says you can kill Afghans, the Iraqis or the Spanish. It is all — excuse my French — shit. It is sad. And I think one of the great abuses of this modern time is that we should have had such high-profile artists, powerful celebrities. But they have turned their back on social responsibility. That goes for Jay-Z and Beyonce, for example. Give me Bruce Springsteen, and now you’re talking. I really think he is black.
Now, he has stated in a new interview with MSNBC (where he appeared to speak on the Dream Defenders movement, as well as Florida’s Stand Your Ground law) that he would like to meet with the Hip-Hop couple to speak on the disconnect.

Beyonce Covers Sam Cooke In Detroit
Spotted on Billboard:
During her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour stop on Saturday night at The Palace of Auburn Hills in the Detroit suburbs, Beyoncé — fresh from the Trayvon Martin rally with husband Jay Z earlier that day in New York City — added Sam Cooke’s “A Chance is Gonna Come” to her set, dedicating it to the city.
The performance was accompanied by a video montage (watch it, above) that included photos of key Detroit sites as well as notable personalities such as boxer Joe Louis and music icons like Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Eminem, the White Stripes, Berry Gordy, Jr., and a full array of Motown legends — including even non-Detroiters like the Jackson 5 and Lionel Richie. The clip concluded with a declaration that “Nothing Stops Detroit!”
Beyoncé did not mention the bankruptcy proceeding, which was announced two days prior, directly at the show. She turned down a request to comment, with a spokesperson telling Billboard that, “This was a unique tribute to the history of an incredible city and a celebration of the strong spirit of its people.”
Detroit’s action, to resolve an estimated $18-$20 billion in debits, is the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in U.S. history.
UPDATE: JAY Z & Beyonce Attend Trayvon Martin Rally In NYC (Video)
UPDATE: Additional footage included below.
News reports state that Beyonce has gone even further by joining the Trayvon Martin Foundation. From the words of Al Sharpton, who explained it best……additional pics below as well:
Jay Z and Beyonce said they didn’t want to speak and they didn’t come for a photo op. Beyonce put a beautiful message up on Instagram. Let me tell you, that before a lot of you were down, Jay Z always supported us.
Jay Z told me, ‘I’m a father. Beyonce is a mother.’ We all feel the pain and apprehension — the laws must protect everybody, or it doesn’t protect anybody. We do not come from hate, we come from love of children.
Trayvon Martin had the civil right to go home that day.

Congress Introduces “Jay-Z & Beyonce” Bill After Cuba Trip
Vlad TV reports:
If passed, the bill would limit funds to the Department of Treasury to approve “travel-related or other transactions incident to non-academic educational exchanges.”
Rep. Ander Crenshaw of Florida used Jay and Beyonce’s trip as an example of how loopholes could be made for travel to Cuba.
“I think that if we’re going to say that we have this policy in place that relates to travel in Cuba, that it ought to be enforced, and that becomes a grey area where they’re probably not really following the guidelines.”
Hov addressed backlash from the trip on “Open Letter” off his new album, rapping, “I’m in Cuba, I love Cubans/This communist talk is so confusing.”

Beyonce’s Dad, Mathew Knowles, Remarries
It should be noted that neither Beyonce nor Solange attended the wedding. From the Washington Post:
Her father and former manager, Mathew Knowles, got married last Sunday. His representative told The Associated Press on Friday that he has wed former model Gena Charmaine Avery in Houston, Texas. The pair had been engaged for a year and a half.
The 48-year-old Avery is a realtor. The 61-year-old Knowles guided his daughter to superstardom with the group Destiny’s Child and later in her solo career; she released her father as her manager in 2011.
Knowles, head of Music World Entertainment, still manages several gospel acts including Grammy-winner Le’Andria Johnson.
