ALBUM REVIEW: Ace Hood – Trials & Tribulations

Ace_Hood_Trials_&_TribulationsALBUM REVIEW: Ace Hood – Trials & Tribulations
★★★★☆

Ace Hood is the epitome of the underdog.

I can’t even really say that I have been counting him amongst the elite in modern Hip-Hop, and he’s dropped 4 — count ’em: FOUR — albums when a lot of artists we have paired him with can’t even get past one. He’s also had a few radio hits and countless mixtapes; at 25, he could almost be considered a vet. But he’s like Rodney Dangerfield — no respect. I would say that that will all change for him with the release of Trials & Tribulations, but when folks are paying more attention to your broken watch than your music, well…you know. With that said, I’m still going to tell you what I think about his latest project.

‘Bugatti’

It’s dope. Seriously. From the start of the album (hell, the start of his career), Ace Hood continues to march forward for the other underdogs of the world (namely, the poor, the Black, the minority, the hopeless) with a lyrical ability that I honestly didn’t realize he had (the title track itself damn near makes you want to start a revolution just off being sick and tired of being sick and tired of whatever situation you might be going through). And he doesn’t stop; if only for a break or two to speak on love (‘Rider’ with Chris Brown) and ballin’ (‘Bugatti’ with Rick Ross & Future and it’s accompanying remix), Ace Hood mercilessly destroys every beat that comes in his way for the sake of letting you know that, like a lot of us, he’s a God-fearing man that came from nothing, but won’t stop at nothing to attain the success that he rightfully deserves.

‘Trials & Tribulations’

I’m not kidding about the lyrical ability, either; not only does he show versatility by switching flows on every track (which automatically debunks many assumptions about where he stands amongst his peers….the greatest example of raw Hip-Hop on here might be ‘Another Statistic’ or ‘The Come Up’ with Anthony Hamilton), but he’s also outrapping everyone else that appears on this album…..an album filled with the likes of a now-kind-of-wack Lil’ Wayne (‘We Outchea’), an equally aggressive Meek Mill (‘Before The Rollie’) and the aforementioned ‘Bugatti’ with Rozay. The hard-hitting production — which features Sonny Digital, Mike Will Made It, The Renegades, Cardiak and more — is just the perfect soundbed for Hood’s wrath.

‘We Outchea’

In a nutshell, I’m saying that Trials & Tribulations is easily one of the better Hip-Hop offerings this year. The unfortunate truth is that, in the middle of the congestion (just look at the all-stars that dropped in June), this album will probably be a mere aforethought*, and Ace Hood will continue to be that underdog. It’s only might hope that he will continue to make these progressive Rap records that folks might finally start to see on a bigger scale.

UPDATE: Kate Middleton Gives Birth To Baby Boy; Name Announced

George Alexander Louis

From Huffington Post:

George Alexander Louis -you can read a history on the name here] has arrived! The royal baby finally has a name, as Kate Middleton and Prince William announced via statement from Kensington Palace on Wednesday. The announcement took 2 days to arrive, as the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to her baby son on Monday.

****************************************

From the Washington Post:

The Duchess of Cambridge gave birth Monday to a boy, a much-anticipated royal baby descended from kings and coal miners and third in line to the British throne.

The royal heir was born at 4:24 p.m. London time and weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, the royal family announced. There was no immediate word on the boy’s name.

In a brief statement earlier Monday, officials at Kensington Palace said the royal formerly known as Kate Middleton was driven in a car to the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital near Paddington Station in West London, where the world press has been camped out for weeks in the hopes of getting a first glimpse of the littlest heir. Prince William rode with his wife to the hospital and remained by her side, a palace spokeswoman said.

Although that initial statement was issued at 7:29 a.m. local time, Catherine was admitted during the early stages of labor just before 6 a.m., the spokeswoman said. She is in the same wing of the same hospital where Diana, Princess of Wales, gave birth to Prince William 31 years ago after a 16-hour labor

The attending physician was Marcus Setchell, Queen Elizabeth II’s gynecologist, who reportedly put off retirement and went on a no-alcohol diet to prepare. As dictated by tradition, the palace made no further comment before the birth.

Miley Cyrus – MTV UK Interview; Speaks On ‘SomewhereInAmerica’ Shoutout

From MTV UK

Miley Cyrus has spoken about her very special bond with collaborator Pharrell Williams, stating she feels “protected” by the producer.

The We Can’t Stop singer has hooked-up with Pharrell on a her currently-untitled new album, with Miley exclusively telling MTV News UK how their collaboration came about.

Speaking to Laura Whitmore, the 20-year old explained: “Pharrell… was the first thing I said, just because that was kind of me at that point – this is before Blurred Lines and Get Lucky was out.

“He had kind of had radio silence for a second and because he was just coming up with this new sound, he was also reinventing himself and getting even more involved with fashion, taking himself to a whole other brand which is what, you know, I’ve been wanting to do.

“I feel protected by him ‘cos he’s like a big bro, so I feel like a whole different vibe in the studio. I kinda got stuck in there with him. Then, once me and Michael [producer Mike Will] were back together and started working on We Can’t Stop the record just got even crazier, so these collaborations have been insane.”

When probed further about her new LP, she continued: “It’s definitely like a kind of a mixture, I know who to go to for certain sounds. Pharrell has his own sound, when it comes on the radio, you immediately know that it’s him.

“And that’s the same thing with Michael Will, he’s got a sound that’s like really young, especially him being 23 – it just makes him have this sound that is fearless, just cause’ he’s young.”

She added: “I think I’ve definitely been inspired by them but they’ve also been inspired by me and so it’s just a mixture of the sounds and just making this record sound so different, it’s got such a cool combination.”

Speaking of her reaction to hip-hop royalty Jay-Z name checking her on Magna Carta Holy Grail track Somewhereinamerica, Miley revealed: “Pharrell had actually hit me [up], he was like ‘Jay-Z wants to call you and tell you that he’s shouting you out in the song tomorrow.’

“I was in Miami and was doing crazy press for my record. So I came out… and we got to go out and hear it in a club. It was fun.”
