Indian Court Convicts 4 In Fatal Gang Rape Case

india-bus-rape_2430878b

From BBC News:

Four men found guilty of the fatal gang rape of a student in the Indian capital Delhi should face the death penalty, prosecutors say.

They told a sentencing hearing the brutality of the crime had shocked the “collective conscience”. The judge, who also heard arguments from the defence, will announce the sentences on Friday.

The woman, 23, was attacked on a bus in December and died two weeks later.

The case led to days of violent protest across India and new laws against rape.

Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta, who denied the charges, were found guilty on Tuesday.

Lawyers for three of the men have said they will appeal against the convictions.

Addressing Judge Yogesh Khanna, public prosecutor Dayan Krishnan said the “sentence which is appropriate is nothing short of death”.

“There can be nothing more diabolical… There is no element of sympathy in the way in which the hapless woman was tortured,” Mr Krishnan was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

Judge Khanna convicted the four men on Tuesday saying they were “guilty of gang rape, unnatural offences, destruction of evidence… and for committing the murder of the helpless victim”.

But arguing against the death penalty on Wednesday, defence lawyers suggested that media coverage had a bearing on the trial.

“In a case where there is a call for the death penalty, we will argue for an easing of the punishment,” VK Anand, one of the lawyers, earlier told the AFP news agency.

Lawyers for the four convicted men say that their clients have been tortured and that some of their confessions – later retracted – were coerced.

Correspondents say that torture is a common occurrence in India’s chaotic criminal justice system.

‘Larger issue’
The victim’s family and activists have welcomed Tuesday’s verdict.

However, the victim’s mother told The Indian Express newspaper that “justice will be done in the true sense only if all of them are hanged”.

The assailants were on an out-of-service bus when they tricked the woman and a male friend into boarding.

Police said the assailants beat both of them and then raped the woman. She died in a Singapore hospital on 29 December – 10 days after the attack – from internal injuries.

The case sparked a national debate on the treatment of women.

Tough new laws were introduced in March which allowed the death penalty – carried out very rarely in India – to be handed down in the most serious cases of rape.

On 31 August a teenager who was found guilty of taking part in the rape was sentenced to three years in a reform facility, the maximum term possible because the crime was committed when he was 17. He also denied all the charges.

Another suspect, Ram Singh, was found dead in his cell in March. Prison officials said they believed he hanged himself but his family allege he was murdered.

“Full Moon” – Mansions on the Moon

Yo I swear its been like a million years since I heard from Mansions on the Moon

One of my favorite indie pop bands of 2010-2012. Superb music, but never really made it anywhere.

artworks-000056511662-pqjirz-t500x500To my disappointment, I figured they had just fallen off the face of the earth. BUT, as I stated earlier, today has been a good day! Mansions on the Moon appeared out of nowhere with their new single “Full Moon”, and it just as pleasing as I expected it to be. …These dudes are talented. I’m telling you.

Anyways, a new EP and/or album is expected soon from what I understand. “Full Moon” is the lead single. If you like this, but never really heard of Mansions on the Moon prior, I’ll give you a nice little warm welcoming in the bonus section. #goodmusic #unique sound …You have no idea how many people I’ve put onto these guys. Enjoy…

BONUS: All of these are must watches and must listens. The best from MOTM from the past 4 years. #ThankMeLater

“She Makes Me Feel” …probably one of the best tracks they’ve released. The only video. Seen this 3 years ago and was sold!

“Darkness” …I loved this song. But even before it officially came out, I loved watching this behind the scenes production process of them making it. Creative working, in the studio with Pharrell and N.E.R.D. (MOTM used to be signed to Star Trak. Not sure if they still are though).

“Magic” …Not real good sound quality on this one. (probably because it was done before they were even going by MOTM). …but still, one of my favs. (They used to be called AVA. Not sure what it stood for, but I’m going to assume it has something to do with their roots being in Virginia)

Some of my favorite songs from the [Paradise Falls] mixtape they did a few years back with Diplo and Benzi. A lot of remixes over dope, then unknown artist tracks like Deadmau5 and Washed Out.

The most recent EP, [Lightyears] …which isn’t exactly all that recent, but damn is it a treat. Signature dreamy, electronic, chillwave-like indie pop

Spin: “Gucci Mane’s Twitter Rant Is a Cry For Help”

In my opinion, Brandon Soderberg hit the nail on the head;

Still, it’s hard not to feel very bad for the guy. Gucci’s scorched earth policy towards his career is a case study in the worst case scenario for what happens to a street rapper in the current rap climate where major labels hedge their bets, and the kind of creative gangsta rap Gucci makes can get nowhere near the pop charts. For a very long time, major labels assisted guys like Gucci Mane, providing them resources and promotion, and presumably, would help them when they were clearly addicted to drugs or mentally ill. Around the middle of the 2000s, at about the point when record sales were cratering and the Internet ruined and fixed everything at all at once, street rappers became nothing more than a liability. Their regional success, street buzz, and savvy ability to mine the mixtape scene and the modern day chitlin circuit of touring didn’t mean shit.

It is not a coincidence that street rap’s pop stars all ended up in jail in the late 2000s: Lil Wayne, T.I., Lil Boosie, Gucci Mane. These guys were no longer protected or assisted by their labels, because suddenly, dangerous rappers were simply not worth the investment. If you can’t get behind that — because yeah, all four of those guys certainly had a hand in their own incarcerations — consider Young Jeezy’s rocky, post-The Recession career (he went from dropping an album a year to constant delays), or the convenient rise of Rick Ross, who wears street-rap menace like a costume, but has none of the problems of guys who are actually from the streets. Rick Ross isn’t going to try to buy guns in a parking lot or throw someone out of a moving car.

Spotted on The Drop:

A$AP Rocky is apologizing to NBA basketball player Jason Collins for his actions at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, which sparked rumors that the rapper was homophobic.

When the duo introduced Macklemore‘s performance of ‘Same Love’ during the awards show on Aug. 25, Rocky looked visibly uncomfortable around the openly-gay Collins, who made a speech about gay rights.

The A$AP Mob leader explained himself to The Stashed, detailing what happened that night.

“I’m mad that my facial expressions was like that because I’m not homophobic at all, and that whole thing just came off real homophobic,” Rocky admits. “I didn’t really notice it until I got home and saw it. I apologize to Jason for that, because people was laughing and s—, and you know… I really don’t think that’s funny. I saw they were making all the memes and pictures and making fun of him.”

He also shared that he wasn’t too fond of MTV pairing him with Collins if he was going to be addressing the topic. “There’s people out there that think I was doing that to be funny, and truthfully I got gay people in my family,” Rocky states. “I don’t give a f— if you gay or you not, I just found it odd that MTV wanted to stand me next to this n—- when they are talking about gay people, that’s all. You know what I’m saying?”

Paparazzi Sues Lamar Odom Over Camera Attack; Kanye West To Blame?

From TMZ:

Lamar Odom has just been sued by the photog whose equipment the NBA star trashed on the street back in July … and the pap is partly blaming Kanye West for Lamar’s outburst, TMZ has learned.

Stefan Saad filed the lawsuit, claiming the NBA star assaulted him and destroyed more than $15,000 worth of camera equipment during the attack in the middle of a Hollywood street …all in an effort to avoid negative press.

The lawsuit trashes the Kardashians and Lamar with gems like this — “The Kardashian clan has apparently come to believe that it is above the law, and has some exceptional privilege to disregard the rights of others.”

The lawsuit goes on “The Kardashian clan are not only wealthy and attractive — but also deeply flawed.”

As we reported, Lamar blew a gasket after the pap peppered him with questions about cheating on Khloe, opening Saad’s car and tossing all his gear onto the pavement, including expensive camera equipment.

Lamar then took a bundle of the photog’s crap, placing it in his own car. The entire incident was caught on tape.

According to Stefan’s lawsuit, Lamar feels like he’s “above the law” because he’s married to a Kardashian sister. Stefan even believes Kanye West had a hand in all this, claiming the rapper (who’s dating Kim) advised him on how to deal with paparazzi in a Kanye fashion.

Stefan is suing for assault, conversion (stealing property), and trespass of property, demanding in excess of $565,000 … not including punitive damages.

A woman and her four-year-old granddaughter have endured a “terrifying” raid by armed burglars who forced entry to a home in London.

The masked men, who were carrying guns and a knife, robbed the address in St Asaph Road, Lewisham, on Monday afternoon, police said.

Money and two mobile phones were stolen.

The woman and the girl were taken to hospital, where they were treated for shock.

Det Insp Ian Cameron said: “This was a terrifying attack which occurred in the middle of the day and left both victims traumatised.”

Police are looking for five men, who are described as being black and said to have been wearing balaclavas, gloves and dark clothing.

“One of the suspects was wearing a green camouflage jacket,” Mr Cameron said.

“I’m convinced that someone in the local area has seen or heard something that could assist us with our investigation.”
