BROKE: Aaron Carter Files For Bankruptcy

Aaron-Carter-1

From the Huffington Post:

The pop star lifestyle apparently hasn’t treated Aaron Carter so well — because the 25-year-old just filed for bankruptcy.

Carter filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to TMZ, claiming that his assets total just $8,232.16. He says his monthly income is $1,998.75 and his monthly expenses are $2,005.

On top of that, he has financial liabilities that reportedly surpass $2.2 million. He allegedly owes $1.4 million to the IRS and has an American Express bill for $31,166.

As the younger brother of Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter, Aaron found his own fame in the late ’90s. He’s best known for his 2000 album, “Aaron’s Party (Come and Get It),” featuring the single, “I Want Candy.” The album went triple platinum (yes, triple), he opened for BSB and Britney Spears, and had romances with the likes of Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan.

These days, things are different.

“I’ve been living a different lifestyle,” Carter told the Wichita Eagle last month. “I don’t party. I’ve partied enough. I don’t go out. I focus on other things that are much more important. I focus on being an entertainer. I love performing. That’s what I’m about. I want to take that next step.”

He is currently touring on the West Coast, and has a show lined up in Eugene, Ore., for Thursday night (Nov. 21).

D.C. Strip Club Stadium Closes Due To TruOrleans Tax Debt

Stadium night club owner and former TruOrleans owner James Redding, seems to not be able to get away from his tax troubles, that caused his H Street restaurant TruOrleans to be shut down in September. It seems that today the District Tax Offices went and closed the doors to Stadium Nightclub.

Washington City Paper Reports:

Troubles continue for former TruOrleans owner James “Tru” Redding. The D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue announced today that it has seized Redding’s strip joint/steakhouse Stadium Club in order to pay the more than $100,000 in sales and use taxes he owes for his now-closed H Street NE restaurant.

The tax office shut down TruOrleans in September, but the restaurant was plagued by a litany of other financial and legal troubles: The landlord was fighting for eviction, neighbors were protesting the liquor license renewal, and multiple vendors had filed lawsuits for unpaid bills.

Redding has had his own personal financial and legal woes, too. Redding’s company James T. Redding, Inc., for which he was the sole shareholder, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Maryland in July. The bankruptcy filings revealed his company owed more than 100 creditors between $1 million and $10 million. Redding also faces fraud charges in Nevada after allegedly writing bad checks at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Redding didn’t immediately return a call to his cell phone.

Y&H wrote in depth about Redding and TruOrleans’ problems in September. Former Y&H columnist Tim Carman also wrote a fantastic reviewof Stadium Club in 2010. It’s well worth a read.

UPDATE, 5:18 p.m.: Stadium Club investor Keith Forney says the club was in the process of being sold to a group of out-of-town investors, although the deal hadn’t been finalized before the District seized the club.

“They weren’t a D.C. bunch,” Forney says of the new investors. “Maybe they didn’t understand the need for speed or whatever.”

Forney, last in the news giving thousands of dollars in gifts to Councilmember Marion Barry in the strip club’s parking lot, declined to name the new investor group or clarify whether he’s still involved in it.

Forney will say, though, that Redding would not have been a member of the new ownership group. “Hopefully it’ll be a more positive thing now that Mr. Redding has moved on to something else,” he says.

Was Rapper Trinidad James Robbed At Gunpoint In NYC?

streetsnaps-trinidad-james-2

This was spotted on a few sites (one example can be found here) with not much actual confirmation as of yet, so take it with a grain of salt for now:

Rapper Trinidad James, who has been catching a lot of slack for his recent comments about New York rap, was allegedly robbed at gunpoint in New York city last night.  A vendor who witnessed the Atlanta rapper being held at gunpoint by two masked assailants, had the following to say: “They even stole the gold out his teeth; Have you seen his teeth? I wouldn’t eat after the nigga if he paid me;  Chains, watch, shades; Gone! There was nothing left but hair, teeth and the phone he dialed 911 on”.  Three NYPD officers reported to the scene and a police report by NYPD Officer Douglas reveals that Trinidad James was stripped down to his underwear and forced to say “nigga, nigga, nigga” with his eyes closed until the robbers jumped in a car and sped off with over $20,000 in clothes and jewelry.  I bet the next time he feels like talking bad about somebody’s city he will have a second thought!!!!

3 Women Rescued After Being Held Captive For 30 Years

Three women have been freed after spending 30 years held captive in a south London home, including one woman believed to have spent her entire life in domestic slavery, police announced Thursday.

CNN Reports:

London (CNN) — British police have arrested a couple on suspicion of holding three women captive for more than 30 years, Scotland Yard announced Thursday.
Officers from the Human Trafficking Unit arrested the man and woman, both 67, at their Lambeth, south London home early Thursday as part of an investigation into slavery and domestic servitude, the Metropolitan Police said. They are in custody.
The “highly traumatized” victims — a 69-year-old Malaysian woman, 57-year-old Irish woman and 30-year-old Briton — have been taken to a place of safety and are being cared for by a charity, the Metropolitan Police said.
Police said they’d been alerted in October to the situation by Freedom Charity, which got a phone call from a woman saying “she had been held against her will in a house in London for more than 30 years.”

“We have launched an extensive investigation to establish the facts surrounding these very serious allegations,” Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland said.
“We’ve established that all three women were held in this situation for at least 30 years. They did have some controlled freedom.”
Hyland praised the actions of Freedom Charity and said police were working with the organization to support the victims.
“They are extremely traumatized, which explains the discrepancy between when the Freedom Charity were contacted and the arrests were made,” he said. “It would be wrong of us to move at a pace that would further traumatize any victims.”
Hyland said police were unsure where the youngest victim had been born, “but she appears to have been in servitude for her entire life.”
Women held captive in a London home Why slavery still exists today
Police had seen no evidence of sexual abuse, he said. “We’re very early in the investigation, we’re not investigating offenses of a sexual nature, there haven’t been any arrests of a sexual nature, so that’s the circumstances at the moment.”
Hyland said it was an unprecedented case for the Met’s Human Trafficking Unit: “We’ve seen some cases where people have been held for up to 10 years, but we’ve never seen anything of this magnitude before.”
A television documentary on forced marriages relating to the work of Freedom Charity prompted one of the victims to call for help.
Freedom Charity spokeswoman Aneeta Prem said the organization had taken “immediate action” to plan a rescue after learning of the women’s situation.
“Facilitating their escape was achieved using utmost sensitivity and secrecy and with the safety of the women as our primary concern,” she said, describing the work of those involved as “outstanding.”
CNN’s Max Foster said police had told him that the women had been released in October after sensitive negotiations by the charity.
The charity had worked to gain their trust and coax them out of the house, communicating through prearranged phone calls.
“Over time they built up that trust, the police gathered outside the house and then they had the confidence to leave the house,” Foster said. “It seems to have taken place in a suburban area of south London, in an ordinary street.”
UK Special Envoy for Human Trafficking Anthony Steen told CNN he was unsurprised by the case as there were likely to be many cases of domestic slavery in the country.
“We don’t know the number but we know it’s pretty huge. Domestics are hidden away,” he said.
“The difference between slavery when it was manifest in America — as it was in England — was that you could see it everywhere,” Steen said. “Since then having abolished it, it’s grown, it’s got bigger and bigger — in fact they say it’s between 10 and 20 times the size it was in the 1800s.”
Steen said the largest number of people involved in slavery in Britain were in brothels, and that group was followed by men held against their will in debt bondage.

‘Nuclear Option’ For Filibusters OK’d In The U.S. Senate

The Democratic controlled Senate voted to involve the so-called nuclear option out of frustration over Republicans who have been blocking President Barack Obama’s nominees.

CNN Reports:

The Democratic-controlled Senate on Thursday voted to invoke the so-called nuclear option out of frustration over Republicans who have been blocking President Barack Obama’s nominees.

The controversial move is a rules change that could make a partisan environment even more divisive because it takes away a sacrosanct right for any party in the Senate minority–the right to filibuster.

Explainer: What’s the nuclear option?

Under the old rules it took 60 votes to break a filibuster. The change now allows most filibusters of Obama nominees to be stopped with 51 votes–a simple Senate majority.

The rules change only applies to executive and judicial nominees, not Supreme Court nominees.

Typically 67 votes are required to change Senate rules, but under the nuclear option, Democrats – who control the chamber with a 55-45 majority – changed those rules with a simple majority vote.

“It’s time to get the Senate working again,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said on the Senate floor. “Not for the good of the current Democratic majority or some future Republican majority, but for the good of the United States of America. It’s time to change. It’s time to change the Senate before this institution becomes obsolete.

The move came about after Republicans blocked three judicial nominees to the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, known as the highest court in the land after the Supreme Court.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Reid “promised over and over again that he wouldn’t break the rules of the Senate to change the Senate.”

“When Democrats were in the minority they argued strenuously for the very thing they now say we will have to do without, namely the right to extend a debate on lifetime appointments. In other words they believe that one set of rules should apply to them and another set to everybody else,” he added.

Until now, Reid hadn’t necessarily had support from enough of his own Democratic caucus to pass a rules change. Some Democratic senators were reluctant to change the rules–because of reverence for the institution and, more importantly, because they know Democrats will not always be in the majority.

The beauty of the way the Senate works, as opposed to the House, is that the minority has more power. The filibuster, a 60 vote hurdle, was one of the biggest weapons in the minority’s arsenal.

But Senate veterans like Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California who had been opposed to the nuclear option – changing Senate rules – recently changed their minds. Feinstein and others, like fellow Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, said things are so broken in Washington that the nuclear option was the only way to fix it.

Many Republicans argued Democrats were just trying to manufacture a crisis in order to create a distraction from the Obamacare rollout debacle.

“Sounds to me like Harry Reid is trying to change the subject and if I were taking all the incoming fire that he is taking over Obamacare I’d try to change the subject too,” House Speaker John Boehner said in his weekly press conference.

“This changes everything, this changes everything,” Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, told reporters the nuclear option “puts on a chill on the entire United States Senate.”

“I have reached to them. I spent an hour in Harry Reid’s office. Come on. I reached out until my arms ache,” McCain added. “They are governed by these hard over, newer members of Democratic senators who have never been a minority, who are primarily driving this issue and they succeeded and they will pay a very, very heavy price for it.”

In 2005, the then majority Republicans threatened the nuclear option to prevent Democratic filibusters of President George W. Bush’s judicial nominees. The confrontation was averted thanks to an agreement by a bipartisan group of 14 senators.

Santana Moss Goes In On Robert Griffin III

Washington Redskins Quarterback, Robert Griffin III (RG3), made some comments following the 24-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, this past Sunday. Those comments have caused some tension in the Redskins locker room, and has sparked some rebuttals from his teammates and criticism from former Redskins players. Veteran receiver, Santana Moss, went on record to say:
” If we’re going to win games, we need to win games with our guy saying, ‘At the end of the day, I didn’t make a play,’ regardless of if it wasn’t him.”

Jay Z Purchases Basquiat Painting For $4.5M

“Inspired by Basquiat, my chariot’s on fire
Everybody took shots, hit my body up, I’m tired
Build me up, break me down to build me up again
They like, Hov we need you back so we can kill your ass again”
-Jay-Z

Rapper Jay-Z took his inspiration by Jean-Michel Basquiat to the next level and purchased a 1982 art piece titled “Mecca”, at Sotheby’s in Manhattan for $4.5Million, from the fellow Brooklyn native, who OD’d on Heroin in 1988, at the age of 27.

taken from Sotheby's website JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT 1960 - 1988 MECCA signed, titled and dated 1982 on the reverse acrylic and oilstick on canvas mounted on wood supports 70 x 68 7/8 in. 177.8 x 172.4 cm.

The NY Post reported on Monday:

The Brooklyn-born rap impresario was the anonymous buyer of a quirky 1982 Basquiat painting titled “Mecca’’ at Sotheby’s in Manhattan last week, a source told The Post.

His hefty purchase — an orange, white and black acrylic and oil-stick work — features the Empire State Building under a trademark Basquiat crown.

Its estimated sale price was between $4 million and $6 million, so the rapper got something of a steal.

But it doesn’t look as if money would have been an object anyway — Jay Z has had a love affair with the late graffiti artist and fellow Brooklyn native for several years.

Jay Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has repeatedly included in his songs references to Basquiat — who OD’d on heroin in 1988 at age 27.

He said one of Basquiat’s paintings even inspired an entire track — and has lovingly talked about a print of that work that he owns.

The painting, “Charles the First,’’ was the basis for his 2010 song “Most Kingz,’’ the rapper has said. It opens with the lyrics “Inspired by Basquiat, my chariot’s on fire.”

In his 12th, and most recent, studio album, “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” Jay Z references some $493 million worth of art, according to Forbes.

In one track, “Picasso Baby,’’ Jay Z gives a nod to Basquiat by rapping, “It ain’t hard to tell, I’m the new Jean-Michel.”
