RIP Lou Reed, Velvet Underground Leader and Rock Legend passed away at 71

Rolling Stone and the New York Times report that Velvet Underground bandleader, noted solo artist, Rock n Roll pioneer Lou Reed has passed away today at age 71. Reed had a liver transplant earlier in the year, but the procedure was reported to have gone well.

More on the NY Times website (by Ben Ratliff) with excerpts below, as well as one of my favorite Lou Reed songs;

Lou Reed, the principal singer in the Velvet Underground, a band that had profound impact on the high-I.Q., low-virtuosity stratum of alternative and underground rock around the world, has died, his literary agent, Andrew Wylie, said on Sunday. He was 71.

Mr. Reed died on Long Island, Mr. Wylie said. “He was as great an artist as it’s possible to be, in my opinion,” Mr. Wylie said.  Mr. Wylie said he believed that Mr. Reed’s death was related to a liver transplant he had this year.

Hit-Boy – Hard Knock TV Interview (Part 2)

In part 2 Hit Boy talks to Nick Huff Barili about growing up mainly with his Mom and 2 Sisters. “I definitely had to grow up a lot faster and I had to learn how to be the man of the house. I had to learn how to take care of myself and protect my Mom and my Sisters.” Hit Boy adds “Its great now cause me and Dad…He is out now [of Jail] and we are building a good relationship.” Hit says that the song “Running in Place” which talks about his father was one of the earlier tracks he recorded for HITstory. “It was something that was just in me.” Hit Boy goes on to talk about when things were going slow for him in 2009 and he only got one placement (with Mary J Blige) the whole year. His friend Ester Dean played him the dvd for The Secret and it helped change his perspective on things. “All I did was change my mental. I started to wake up every morning and say this is going to be the greatest day of my life and I would just appreciate the smallest thing….I’ve been that way since 09 and my life has completely changed.” As the interview continues Hit talks about a beat he made in 2007 that he wanted to give to Kanye West. Hit Boy carried around the beat with him until one day he met Kanye West when Ye came to the studio Hit was at to work with Pharrell. Fast forward to last year, Hit walks us through what was going through his mind when Jay-Z called him out on stage after him and Kanye just performed the Hit Boy produced track “Niggas in Paris” 12 times in a row.

Jay Z Responds To Barneys Controversy

jayz

Some people went hard on Jay Z after reports of separate incidents surfaced involving racial discrimination by two African American teens at the Barneys flagship store in New York City. Today, Jay Z has released a statement via his website LIFE+TIMES:

I move and speak based on facts and not emotion. I haven’t made any comments because I am waiting on facts and the outcome of a meeting between community leaders and Barneys. Why am I being demonized, denounced and thrown on the cover of a newspaper for not speaking immediately? The negligent, erroneous reports and attacks on my character, intentions, and the spirit of this collaboration have forced me into a statement I didn’t want to make without the full facts. Making a decision prematurely to pull out of this project, wouldn’t hurt Barneys or Shawn Carter, but all the people that stand a chance at higher education. I have been working with my team ever since the situation was brought to my attention to get to the bottom of these incidents and at the same time find a solution that doesn’t harm all those that stand to benefit from this collaboration.

I am against discrimination of any kind, but if I make snap judgements, no matter who it’s towards, aren’t I committing the same sin as someone who profiles? I am no stranger to being profiled and I truly empathize with anyone that has been put in that position. Hopefully this brings forth a dialogue to effect real change. – Shawn “JAY Z” Carter
