Derrick Pike Twitter Contest: For A Free Video

“TWITTER CONTEST #2: I will do a music video for whoever can most creatively put my name in an original song. The video will be for this song, and I promise you I will come with a creative and original video. Contest is open to ANYONE and EVERYONE; like all my video contests, the only catch is we get to do a concept that I had that a label commissioner passed on. Deadline is July 4th and the winner will be announced soon after. Submit all songs to music4dp@gmail.com I am only doing these contests 1-2 times a year so dont miss out on this oppurtunity! See the past winner’s story after the jump.…”
Since I am always getting asked by artists to do free videos, I decided to do something interesting. Around this time last summer, bored one night, and stuck at 5,900 twitter followers I came up with a plan. Hold a contest, where the person who could go the hardest and get me over 6k by midnight would get a free video. It was 11:58pm when Jay Electronica retweeted an up and coming NY artist by the name of T.Shirt and told all of his followers to follow me on T.Shirts behalf. Within a minute I was over 6k and I had a winner. Above is what came out of the collaboration. An idea I came up with, something that I could NEVER pitch to a label simply because what executive in their right mind would let their million dollar investment hang upside down for 30 minutes by a piece of rope! Little videos like this one, shot in a friends basement, and with no budget can still be just as powerful and effective as the big budget ones. Most up and coming artists these days can barely put food on their table let alone stunt in a music video. Some are even just as talented as label artists, but dont have the support to create a visual. Im just a kid who loves to shoot, yes this is how I make my living so I need to get paid for my work, but sometimes I also need to just shoot ideas that pop into my head and what better way to do just that than with someone who desperately can use a visual. So I am going to do more of these, hold contests via twitter and offer the same thing every time, a music video. The only catch is, I get to pick the song, and I get to do a concept that has been stuck in my head waiting to get out. Look, it worked for T.Shirt.

Earl Sweatshirt’s Coral Reef Academy Friend Says "New Yorker" Story Is False

The saga continues. Two months ago Complex solved Odd Future‘s longstanding Earl Sweatshirt mystery. We confirmed the rapper’s presence at a troubled youth center called Coral Reef Academy in Samoa. A month later, the New Yorker published a story in which Kelefa Sanneh claimed to have actually corresponded with Earl himself through relayed email messages from his mother, who is also quoted (but not named) in the story.

The quotes from Sanneh’s email interview with the teen star made the once brash, defiant MC sound like a changed man. Earl said, “I’m not being held against my will,” admitted to hardly rapping anymore, and asked OF fans to stop the “Free Earl” chants. Due to the lack of a face-to-face or phone interview with the missing Odd Future member, the story was met with immediate skepticism. The New Yorker hosted a live online chat for people with additional questions, and in his first response, Sanneh even said that “there’s simply no way of knowing whether (or how much) [Earl’s] replies were influenced by his family, or his school.”

Now it appears that doubts about the authenticity of Earl’s New Yorker quotes may hold some merit. Coral Reef Academy alumni Tyler Craven, who indirectly led Complex to Earl’s initial discovery when we stumbled onto his Facebook, is back from Samoa and bent on telling people “the truth” about Earl. Last weekend the Virginia native’s page lit up with questions from OFWGKTA supporters, which led to responses from Craven about his friendship with Earl, staff conduct at the academy, and allegations about the credibility of the New Yorker quotes.

The untold truth about Earl Sweatshirt or attention-seeking antics from a scorned student?

Beyonce Speaks on 4 Leak

Beyoncé is taking a glass-half-full approach to the leak of her entire 4 album three weeks before its June 28 release date.

In a statement released to MTV News on Wednesday (June 8), Beyoncé lamented the early arrival but said she’s making the most of the eagerness of her fans to get their hands on her first new batch of songs since 2008’s double-disc I Am … Sasha Fierce.

“My music was leaked and while this is not how I wanted to present my new songs, I appreciate the positive response from my fans,” the singer wrote. “When I record music I always think about my fans singing every note and dancing to every beat. I make music to make people happy and I appreciate that everyone has been so anxious to hear my new songs.”

Beyoncé fans were psyched Tuesday when her collabo with Andre 3000, “Party,” leaked weeks before the new album was due. It was one of several leaks the album has faced over the past week. A short time after the Kanye West and Consequence-produced “Party” slipped out, another song, “Countdown,” which samples the Boyz II Men tune “Uhh Ahh,” also surfaced, followed by the entire album.

While B’s team scrambles to take down the offending links that have popped up all over the Web, some online rogues have taken to Twitter to put up links, making it harder for the label to track down the music. Fans have already gotten a number of listens to tunes from the disc, including the uptempo dancehall first single “Run the World (Girls),” the lush ballad “1+1” and the second official single “Best Thing I Never Had.” Another tune, “End of Time,” which samples late Afrobeat superstar Fela Kuti, has also leaked online.
