RECAP: CNN Interviews George Zimmerman; Says He’s Sorry For Martin Family’s Loss (Video)

(CNN) — George Zimmerman says he still gets death threats, is still accused of being a racist and is still a lightning rod for criticism.

But in the end, there’s only one judge who matters, he told CNN.

“God,” Zimmerman said in an interview broadcast on CNN’s “New Day” on Monday. “I know that ultimately, he’s the only judge that I have to answer to.

“He knows what happened. I know what happened. So I’d leave it up to him.”

It’s been seven months since a Florida jury acquitted Zimmerman of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in Trayvon Martin’s death.

Zimmerman thought his life would go back to normal.

Troubles often follow high-profile acquittals.

“I was hoping for that,” he told Chris Cuomo.

But nearly two years after the night when Zimmerman killed 17-year-old Martin in a Florida subdivision, life is anything but the way it used to be for the 30-year-old former neighborhood watchman.

His run-ins with law enforcement since the trial’s July conclusion have kept his name in the headlines. He’s recently drawn renewed criticism for using his notoriety to hawk his own artwork.

And now, the man who once aspired to become a police officer tells CNN he’s hoping to go back to school and pursue a career as a lawyer “to stop the miscarriage of justice.”

“I’d like to professionally … continue my education and hopefully become an attorney,” he said. “I think that’s the best way to stop the miscarriage of justice that happened to me from happening to somebody else. I don’t think it should ever happen to anyone ever again, not one person.”

Zimmerman maintains that he acted in self-defense within the law when he shot Martin.

And he says he was a scapegoat for “the government, the President, the attorney general.”

Nas Speaks On Upcoming XBox Series

Nas

Nas recently spoke to Rolling Stone on that XBox Series that we posted about earlier:

As a rapper whose 20-year career has relied on putting the personal on paper, Nas hasn’t been shy about letting the world into his own life. But with the announcement earlier this week of Street Dreams, his upcoming autobiographical drama series on Xbox, the rapper admits the show will be his most personal project yet.

Where does ‘Illmatic’ rank on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time?

“I’m hands-on with everything, so this show is 100 percent authentic,” Nas tells Rolling Stone. “Even if I don’t look cool in it, I just want it to be real and raw. I didn’t see this as a full autobiography at first. But I have so much that’s happened in my life already, there was no room for fantasy. I wanted it to be entertaining, but everything from my life seemed to be so strong. It’s all reality. There’s nothing from my life I didn’t want in there.”

The seeds of Street Dreams go back nearly two years, when Nas, his manager Anthony Saleh (who doubles as the show’s executive producer) and others on his team started to brainstorm a new way to tell the rapper’s story. “Once we developed a treatment, we shopped it to a ton of networks,” says Saleh. “They were interested, but we wanted to take another step forward in the technology realm and felt Xbox was the perfect partner to represent how we think about the world. Content consumption is changing by the minute and a non-traditional platform like Xbox is the perfect home for this.”

The rapper and his team are currently finishing up scripts for the show before determining Street Dreams’ production schedule. The show is still in the process of casting the lead role, though Nas says he hopes to begin production on Street Dreams this year.

While Nas won’t be acting in the series, the rapper will contribute music and co-write many of the episodes. Despite more than two decades as a professional writer, Nas says that writing lyrics couldn’t prepare him for writing a scripted series.

“It’s a whole different process,” says the rapper. “It’s really therapeutic. I look back and I think about my mom [who passed away in 2002] and I know she’s looking down. Sometimes, I have a conversation with her, like, ‘Did you ever think that our story would be put to film for people to see? Did you know it was that special back then?’ I felt it was that special. This is life. I have to accept that and that’s what writing this is like.”

Where does ‘Illmatic’ rank on Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time?

Street Dreams will be directed and co-written by Jonathan Levine, best known for his 2008 hip-hop-infused coming-of-age film The Wackness. Nas contributed his 1994 classic track “The World Is Yours” to the film, and Saleh tells Rolling Stone that the filmmaker was a natural fit.

“Jonathan was our first choice and when we met him, he was more excited than we were,” says Saleh. “He got it instantly and spent time in Queensbridge [where Nas grew up] to talk to residents and absorb the vibe.”

“I really felt what he was doing back then,” adds Nas. “The way that he filmed New York City and told his story was so dead on, i just felt that he was the guy to do it. I think he’s a brilliant director.”

Despite his openness, Nas admits he was reluctant and nervous to begin writing about his life, and says he’s planning to retreat for a bit once the series is released. “I’ve figured out an escape plan to get out of Dodge once this hits the air and I let people in,” says the rapper. “I don’t want to be around. I want to be on a beach. I don’t want to deal with it. This is my life that hopefully somebody can look at or learn from or be entertained by, but I want to get out the way.”

T-Pain Speaks On Frank Ocean, Hip-Hop Homophobia

T-Pain addresses a previous comparison he made concerning Ray J after seeing his sex tape with Kim Kardashian, which led into a conversation about people being homophobic. The “Up Down” rapper believes that “if you aren’t gay, then gay things shouldn’t bother you.”

The conversation then turns to T-Pain’s gay assistant, which the rapper says has made other people uncomfortable to approach him in the club or any time they are together. He believes that there is so much homophobia in hip-hop that it stops people from working with talented artists like Frank Ocean, which T-Pain says is “terrible, because they need Frank Ocean on the song.” The Florida native adds that he doesn’t work with anyone who’s homophobic in the business and who cut others off over the way they want to live their lives.

T.I. Speaks On Bringing Jeezy & Rick Ross Together….

Get More:
Music News

….which brought us the very dope record ‘War Ready‘. T.I. spoke on his role in the beef-squashing above (and below):

I ain’t gonna say I brokered peace and got them in the studio, I simply said to one of my closest partners in the game — Young Jeezy — I simply said to him, ‘We done did as much as we can do with this. It’s gone as far as we can take it, ain’t nothing else to do.

If it ain’t nothing that can’t be talked about, that hasn’t gone so far that a motherfucka can’t come back and do what the fuck we do man, get money. War costs money.

Young ain’t the type of motherfucka you can just tell what to do, but if you can present something that makes more sense then what he had, go on, he will give you the opportunity to make it make sense to him. And I think the same for Ross. They exhausted all of their other possible opportunities.

Samuel L. Jackson Gets Mistaken For Laurence Fishburne During Interview; Laurence Fishburne Laughs At The Issue

UPDATE: The reporter — Sam Rubin — speaks on his hilarious error here.

****************************************

Above is Sam Jackson blasting his interview for the mistake. From L.A. Times:

Samuel L. Jackson and Laurence Fishburne might consider wearing name tags so that people can tell them apart.
KTLA entertainment reporter Sam Rubin is still riding a wave of national ridicule and embarrassment the day after he mistook Jackson for Fishburne during a live interview on the Los Angeles station’s morning news show. The actor mercilessly blasted the mortified Rubin during the segment, questioning his qualifications as an entertainment journalist.

But Rubin is far from being the first to confuse the two African American actors.

In an interview last April [below] on “George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight,” a talk show that airs weekdays on the CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster, Fishburne talked about how he has long been mistaken for Jackson.

The actor recalled how he was doing an interview 20 years ago when he was approached by a woman from Texas who said, ‘I don’t mean to bother you, but can I have your autograph, Mr. Jackson?”

Fishburne obliged, signing the autograph, “Sam Jackson.”

“Sam and I have this running gag about it,” said Fishburne, noting it’s not something that upsets him.
“Once upon a time, people used to confuse Al Pacino with Dustin Hoffman,” he said. “It’s not a bad problem to have.”

The Queensbridge rapper says him and his friend spent countless hours recording themselves rhyming and messing around on turntables. “If it was raining outside, we’d spend the whole day just f*cking around, know what I’m saying, “he recalled of the time spent with Ill Will.

Nas also touches on Ill Will getting ambushed by a girl’s family and shot in the back, and later how he named his label, Ill Will Records, in honor of his slain friend. – Vlad TV
