Jay-Z’s Samsung App Under Investigation For Privacy Violations

Jay-Z-Arrives-at-the-Chateau-Marmont-January-24-2013-jay-z-33427633-396-594From Rolling Stone:

The advocacy group Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate the app created by Jay-Z and Samsung to distribute the rapper’s latest album, Magna Carta Holy Grail.

In order to download the LP via the app, users were required to grant the Samsung-exclusive program access to such information as their age and Facebook and Twitter info, as well as release data regarding their location, phone calls and networks. Furthermore, users were required to grant the app permission to post on social media sites on their behalf, and a status update was necessary if a user wanted to access a lyric sheet. An estimated 1.2 million people downloaded the app.

“Samsung failed to disclose material information about the privacy practices of the app, collected data unnecessary to the functioning of the Magna Carta App, deprived users of meaningful choice regarding the collection of their data, interfered with device functionality and failed to implement reasonable data minimization procedures,” EPIC claimed, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Samsung has responded to the group’s complaint with the FTC, saying that the MCHG app’s permissions were standard and in line with other applications. “Any information obtained through the application download process was purely for customer verification purposes, app functionality purposes and for marketing communications, but only if the customer requests to receive those marketing communications,” the electronics giant said in a statement. “Samsung is in no way inappropriately using or selling any information obtained from users through the download process.”

Nevertheless, EPIC is asking the FTC to not just investigate Samsung, but also requested that they restrict Samsung’s “data collection to the user data necessary to run the app” and “delete the user data that was improperly obtained.”

Jeremiah Reynolds, a lawyer at Kinsella Weitzman Iser Kump and Aldisert who specializes in intellectual property law, said EPIC’s complaint would probably not register with the FTC, however, as users ultimately granted the app permission to obtain their information.

Jay-Z, for his part, responded to a question from Politico reporter Dan Byers about the app’s invasive privacy requirements during an extensive Twitter Q&A: “sux must do better,” Hov said.

Gay marriage is now legal in England and Wales after the government’s Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill was granted Royal Assent on Wednesday afternoon.

Peers approved the Bill on Monday and it was rubber stamped by MPs on Tuesday. News that the Bill had become law today was greeted with cheers in both chambers.

Rolling Stone Responds To Tsarnaev Cover Boycott; CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid & Kmart Add Themselves To The List

Rolling Stone Boston Marathon Bombing

As you may well know, Rolling Stone‘s latest issue features accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in a light that many folks feel resemble that of a rock star; that, and the fact that an entertainment magazine is putting him on the cover, have driven quite a few folks mad to say the least.

Rolling Stone has issued a statement on the matter, which you can read below:

Our hearts go out to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, and our thoughts are always with them and their families. The cover story we are publishing this week falls within the traditions of journalism and Rolling Stone’s long-standing commitment to serious and thoughtful coverage of the most important political and cultural issues of our day. The fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is young, and in the same age group as many of our readers, makes it all the more important for us to examine the complexities of this issue and gain a more complete understanding of how a tragedy like this happens.

Hampton University Student Recieves Scholarship From Wale

From HBCU Buzz:

The moment of a lifetime arrived after Hampton University sophomore psychology major and Gloucester resident Lauren Pryor, won a $25,000 scholarship from rapper Wale. In a challenge presented on June 18 from Norfolk hip-hop station 103 JAMZ, Pryor was the 25th caller and the winner. In one brief week, Pryor went from winning a chance in a thousand to a moment in a million.

“I was on my way to a friend’s home in Hampton when I heard the radio challenge that the 25th caller would win the prize,” said Pryor. “The station said to call between 4 and 5 p.m. I called four or five times. The line was always busy. On about the 14th call I told myself to give it a rest then, I heard a man say ‘hello.’ “I didn’t believe it. He told me there were millions of calls and he only picked up the phone 14 times nationwide,” Pryor said in an article in the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal.

Pryor spent a glitz-filled two days, June 23-24, with all the VIP amenities anyone could ask for in New York City.

“Winning this scholarship was truly a blessing,” said Pryor. “Almost not returning to Hampton University in the fall because of expenses, I was exceedingly fortunate to receive this scholarship. It was truly a test of faith.”

Nas & Harvard University Announce Hip-Hop Fellowship

Full press release below.

Fellowship To Fund Scholars And Artists Who Demonstrate Exceptional Productive Scholarship And Exceptional Creative Ability In The Arts, In Connection With Hiphop

(July 12, 2013 – New York, NY) The two decade (plus) career of multi-platinum Def Jam Recordings artist Nas is at the heart of a joint announcement by the Hiphop Archive and the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute at Harvard University, to establish the Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellowship. The Fellowship will provide selected scholars and artists with an opportunity to show that “education is real power,” as it builds upon the achievements of those who demonstrate exceptional capacity for productive scholarship and exceptional creative ability in the arts, in connection with Hiphop.

The mission of the Hiphop Archive is threefold: to seek projects from scholars and artists that build on the rich and complex hiphop tradition; to respect that tradition through historically grounded and contextualized critical insights; and most importantly, to represent one’s creative and/or intellectually rigorous contribution to hiphop and the discourse through personal and academic projects. Personal projects of fellows may include manuscript projects, performance pieces, album work, curriculum planning, primary archival research, and exhibition preparation, among others.

“Having welcomed artists including Ninth Wonder and scholars including Mark Anthony Neal, the Hiphop Archive and Research Institute is uncompromising in our commitment to build and support intellectually challenging and innovative scholarship that reflects the rigor and achievement of Hiphop performance,” said Marcyliena Morgan, Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University and founder and director of the Hiphop Archive and Research Institute. “With the introduction of the Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellowship, we will continue to be the leading resource for those interested in knowing, developing, building, maintaining, and representing Hiphop.”

Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research, added, “Nas is a true visionary, and he consistently shows how boundaries can be pushed and expanded to further the cause of education and knowledge. The work of the Du Bois Institute is enriched by the addition of the Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellowship.”

Nasir Jones, or Nas, critically acclaimed for his lyrical skill, social analysis and commitment, has helped usher in an original form of hiphop debate and analysis that reflects on and represents urban youth angst and conflict as well as intelligence, confidence and ambition. A quintessentially honest artist, Nas has taken great risks in exposing his deepest vulnerabilities while still staying relevant to a wide audience. He has tackled both intense political issues and hardcore street topics. In doing so, he has inspired a generation. This Fellowship honors his work while supporting the work of others. Fellows are chosen by a selection committee comprising members of the Harvard University faculty. The Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellowship is the result of a generous gift from National Advisory Board member Ben Horowitz.

LIFE IS GOOD (released July 2012), the most recent album by Nas, was his third consecutive Def Jam album to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. It followed the releases of the RIAA platinum, Grammy®-nominated Hip-Hop Is Dead (December 2006), and the RIAA gold, Grammy®-nominated untitled album (July 2008).
The first full-length album by poet and rhyme-master Nas arrived in 1994, the RIAA platinum Illmatic (Columbia Records). 1996 brought the breakthrough double-platinum It Was Written (#1 R&B for 7 weeks, #1 pop for 4 weeks). The streak continued with the double-platinum I Am in 1999 (again #1 pop and #1 R&B). Subsequent albums by Nas included: the RIAA platinum Nastradamus (1999, #2 R&B, #7 pop); the platinum Stillmatic (2001, #1 R&B, #5 pop); the platinum God’s Son (2002, #1 R&B); and the platinum double-CD Street’s Disciple (2004, #2 R&B, #5 pop).

In addition to his successful career in music, Nas has pursued a career in motion pictures that began with his co-starring role (alongside DMX) in 1998’s crime drama Belly, a film by director Hype Williams (with whom Nas has done several video clips). Subsequent appearances include Albert Pyun’s action crime thriller Ticker (2001, with Tim Sizemore and Steven Seagal); Carl Seaton’s Sacred Is the Flesh (2001, also co-written by Nas); a cameo as himself in Boaz Yakin’s comedy Uptown Girls (2003, with Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning); Lawrence Page’s Murda Muzik (2004, with Ron Artest and Chinky); the fictional hip-hop group bio-pic The Vapors (2008, with an all-star cast of Roxanne Shanté, Kool G Rap, Marley Marl, Biz Markie, and others); and the CBS tv hit series, Hawaii Five-O.

The Hiphop Archive was officially established at Harvard University in 2002 under the direction of Professor Marcyliena Morgan to support and establish the emerging research and scholarship devoted to the knowledge, art, culture, materials, organizations, movements and institutions developed by those who support and follow hiphop. The Hiphop Archive and Research Institute organizes and develops collections, initiates and participates in research activities, sponsors events and acquires material culture associated with hiphop in the U.S. and throughout the world.

Named after William Edward Burghardt Du Bois who, in 1895, was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University, the W. E. B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research is the nation’s oldest research center dedicated to the study of the history and culture of Africans and African Americans. The Institute was established in 1975 to sponsor fellowships that would facilitate the writing of doctoral dissertations in areas related to Afro-American Studies. Today, the Institute awards up to twenty fellowships annually to scholars at various stages of their careers in the fields of African and African American Studies, broadly defined to cover the expanse of the African Diaspora. The W. E. B. Du Bois Institute’s research projects and visiting fellows form the nucleus around which revolve an array of lecture series, art exhibitions, readings, conferences, and archival and publication projects.

Courtesy of Digital Spy:

Big Brother contestant Daley Ojuederie has been removed by producers following “threatening and aggressive behavior” towards Hazel O’Sullivan.

The 28-year-old slapped on-show love interest Hazel on the backside, clasped her around her neck and pinned her to the bed by both arms as they stayed together in the Safe House.

A spokesperson confirmed to Digital Spy: “Due to threatening and aggressive behavior towards Hazel O’Sullivan we have taken the decision to remove Daley Ojuederie from the Big Brother House.”

Big Brother also revealed that Daley told Hazel: “Do you want me to go f**king mad now? Do you remember when I said, yeah, when I go mad it’s f**king scary… doesn’t mean I’m gonna hit you but it’s scary s**t.”

When Hazel told him to “go for it”, he continued: “Have some respect for your f**king elders, yeah do you understand me… ‘cos if you don’t… I’ll finish you… Respect your f**king elders, before I nut you one.”

The pair’s relationship has attracted much criticism from Big Brother viewers due to Daley having a girlfriend in the outside world.

Pastor & His Mistress Accused of Trying to Kill His Wife

Action News 5 – Memphis, Tennessee

Wendyista reports:

This story boggle our minds. Eddie Mallonee, who resigned as pastor of Second Baptist Church in Union City, Tennessee, last February after rumors circulated he was having an affair, is now embroiled in an even bigger scandal — attempted murder. According to police, Eddie and his mistress (Shelley Moran) plotted to poison Eddie’s wife of 34 years, Cathy Moran. Cathy survived and she and Eddie are still together. They even showed up to his court hearing hand-in-hand. We think she’s brainwashed, because these pastors and churches are teeming filled with hypocrisy.

George Zimmerman Plans To Buy Second Gun, Go To Law School

ZIMMERMAN-articleLarge

Vlad Report:

According to TIME, Zimmerman told his friend Leanne Benjamin he’d like to pursue a career in the legal field so he can “help other people like me.”

“He sees it as a potential path to help other people like himself,” Benjamin told Reuters.

Zimmerman was in the process of studying for an associate’s degree in general studies last year, when he was kicked out due to the high profile case with Trayvon Martin.

“He wanted to be a cop for awhile, but he’s talked about going to law school,” said Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara told Reuters. “I will not be surprised if he ends up in criminal law. His dad was a judge, and he wants to be a prosecutor or a lawyer.”

Chris Brown May Be Off The Hook Over Hit & Run Case

EXCLUSIVE - Chris Brown Gets In Another Car Accident!

From TMZ:

The L.A. City Attorney’s office has just objected to the settlement between Chris and Olga because it hasn’t yet made direct contact with Olga. The City Attorney wants to make sure Olga’s on board with the deal before they sign off on it. The judge has since continued the hearing to July 23rd.

Chris Brown will NOT be prosecuted for the alleged hit-and-run in May … at least that’s the way the victim wants it.

Brown was charged with the crime after leaving the scene of a minor rear-end collision without forking over identifying information — i.e., a California driver’s license and insurance info.

We’ve learned Olga Gure-Kovalenko — the driver of the vehicle Chris hit — has no desire to have him prosecuted, so Chris’ lawyer, Mark Geragos, has filed legal docs to have the criminal case dropped.
