IDK – “Digital” (Video); Inks Partnership Deal with Warner Records

Today, Maryland-raised rapper IDK (formerly Jay IDK) announces a new label in partnership with Warner Records. The new label, Clue, will house all of his upcoming releases, including his forthcoming debut album Is He Real that is due later this year. The partnership is the culmination of a strong run of independent releases from IDK, including five projects in the past five years.

When speaking on the partnership, Warner Records Co-chairman and Chief Executive Officer Aaron Bay-Schuck said, “IDK is at the forefront of this next generation of artists who actually have something to say. To call him just a rapper is not doing him justice. He is an artist in the truest sense of the word. His lyrical prowess is unmatched, his ideas and vision are wildly creative. He’s doing things his way and he’s making impactful and controversial statements with his music that challenge the way we look at the world. Tom Corson and I are thrilled to welcome him to the growing roster of exciting artists at Warner Records.”

Coinciding with the announcement, IDK shares a powerful new video for his latest release “Digital.” The video, directed by IDK himself, is a cautionary tale for young people of color in the United States. The black-and-white visual depicts a story unfolding on a split screen, with one side depicting the reality of the story as it unfolds and the other side depicting an outsiders’ perception of that same story unfolding. It’s a moving statement that speaks to the ongoing crisis of police brutality faced by people of color throughout the U.S. and beyond as well as the underlying issues of institutionalized racism in the country.

Watch “Digital” now and stay tuned for more from IDK and Clue coming soon.

A post shared by Sir Justin 💎💎💎 (@yaddiya) on

You can read the full story at The Washington Post:

A group of D.C. lawmakers wants to make the nation’s capital the first jurisdiction to restore voting rights to felons while they’re still incarcerated.

Council member Robert C. White Jr. (D-At Large), with a majority of the 13-member body, plans to introduce legislation Tuesday to repeal language in a 1955 law that disenfranchises D.C. residents upon felony convictions. Every state except Maine and Vermont has stripped voting rights from prisoners.

“Unfortunately in the District and across the country, incarcerated people make up a sizable population of residents,” White said. “They don’t lose their citizenship when they are incarcerated, so they shouldn’t lose their right to vote.”

The District is among jurisdictions with the fewest restrictions regarding felons and voting. Felons in the District and 14 states automatically regain their voting rights when they are released from prison, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Elections officials visit the D.C. jail to help residents who are awaiting trial cast absentee ballots.

Go-Go To Become The Official Music Of D.C.

From WUSA9, where you can read the full story:

One District of Columbia councilmember wants to make go-go the official music of “Chocolate City” after at least one resident in the rapidly gentrifying Shaw neighborhood complained about the beat.

Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie wants to amend city code to enshrine go-go music as a part of the fabric of the District, he said in a news release. His 12 other colleagues on the council also are sponsors of the bill.

“To me, and so many other native Washingtonians, go-go music has become so much more than just a musical genre.” he said. “Designating go-go the official music of the city signals to those who have been here and to those who continue to move here, that this music represents the lived experiences of native Washingtonians.”

R.I.P. Maurice Scott

In the midst of the Don’t Mute DC movement, it’s quite disheartening to see such a big wave in violence this month — the most striking probably being that of 15-year-old Maurice Scott, who was killed in SE at the start of the week. You can read the news story below (in full here):

Maurice Scott was walking to the store – about a block away from Somerset Prep School where he went to school – when a gunman got out of the passenger’s side of a car and opened fire.

DC Police said the shooter shot four people in total. Council member Trayon White heard the shots ring out and ran to the scene. He said the three other females who were shot were all relatives, including a mother and her 9-year-old daughter. They were shot in the legs and feet and are expected to survive.

“It was a horrifying scene, clothes on the ground, people screaming,” White said. White represents Ward 8 and says in the past nine months alone, 18 children have been shot there. He is fed up with the violence, as 7 other people were shot Monday, following WUSA9’s interview with the councilman.

Police are still looking for the shooter who they say was in a light colored, four door sedan. They are also reviewing security camera footage from nearby stores. It happened on the 3500 block of Wheeler Avenue in Southeast DC.

Scott, 15, was the only one who did not survive the shooting.

CM White also revealed that there will be a community meeting at Malcolm X and MLK (Congress Heights) at 6:30pm this Friday. It always seems like the Summer brings death, and it’s only hopeful that we as a community can come together to find a proper solution.

Logic’s ‘Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind’ Tops The Charts

From Billboard, where you can read the full story…a full stream of the album is below:

Logic notches his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as Confessions of a Dangerous Mind debuts atop the tally.

The set starts with 80,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending May 16, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 24,000 were in album sales. Confessions was released on May 10 via Visionary/Def Jam Recordings.

Logic previously led the list with Bobby Tarantino II (in 2018) and Everybody (2017). Logic made his Billboard 200 debut in 2014 with Under Pressure, which peaked at No. 4 — his first of six top 10 albums (including Confessions).

Confessions’ debut frame was largely powered by streaming activity, as the set racked up 54,000 SEA units (of its total 80,000 overall units). That 54,000 SEA number equates to 73.93 million on-demand audio streams for its tracks in the album’s debut frame, which also made it the most streamed album of the week.

Happy D.C. Natives Day!

This is a day I’m still trying to process, in all honesty: city leaders like Tony Lewis, Jr., Angel Gregorio and others have delivered a rallying cry in light of the rampant gentrification that’s pushing long-time D.C. residents out, laying destruction to the city’s culture en masse.

As a first generation D.C. resident (born in raised in Petworth, Uptown), it has definitely been surreal, to say the least…from seeing a new subway station planted in your neighborhood to watching your neighbors get evicted from a rowhouse I thought they owned (and witnessing many others follow), watching a corner restaurant go through a variety of changes (it’s currently a rock-and-roll venue, which is hilariously jarring to me) to seeing longtime Go-Go spots like the Black Hole disappear into just that…this run-on sentence could go on forever. And then to see your peers — shout-out to Yaddiya and Byrd as well — pushing back against a growing group of ignorant, entitled people who have no concern for tradition, you definitely hope that the awareness raised could kick-start a permanent shift that will ensure that D.C.’s best bits can co-exist with the new.

Yesterday saw the second big D.C. native photoshoot, a year after the first one was sparked by whatever the hell the Washingtonian thought it was doing, which went down at the Union District Oyster Bar; you can check out video and pics from what went down below. You can also click here to see what else the creators of this holiday have planned for the rest of the week.

Now that I reside in Congress Heights in SE (which feels like Zion from The Matrix right now and is on the verge of a big influx in its own right), I sit here wide-eyed to what will come from D.C. Natives day in the future, ready to contribute whatever my two hands can create to keep it moving forward.

R.I.P. John Singleton

From TMZ:

John Singleton, the first African American nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director — whose decorated career spanned nearly three decades in Hollywood — has died … TMZ has learned.

A Singleton family rep says he passed “peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends.” The news comes more than a week after the famed director suffered a massive stroke. As we first reported … John’s mom, Shelia Ward, filed legal docs asking the judge to appoint her temporary conservator because he was “unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.” He had been in a coma in ICU at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A.

The “Boyz n the Hood” director suffered the stroke 12 days ago after returning from Costa Rica and experiencing problems with his legs. He checked himself into Cedars where he suffered a stroke on April 17 in his hospital room.

Gentrifiers Are Now Walking Their Dogs on Howard University’s Campus

D.C. just recently found themselves fighting back about playing music in an area that’s been doing so long before the gentrifiers decided to show up. Now, here’s the latest in colonizer bulls***, as seen on NewsOne:

Now, some students at Howard University are upset about local residents using their campus as a dog park. The solution? One colonizer says “move the campus.”

Fox 5 spoke to Malakhi Briggs, a sophomore at Howard, who said, “‘The Yard’ is for the students and although everyone loves pets, I feel like it’s disrespectful to have the pets just running around, especially when there are several parks around here, If they come on ‘The Yard’ and they’re just walking through, I don’t necessarily have a problem with that, but I still feel like there are other ways to get around D.C. without having to cut through a college campus.”

Sean Grubbs-Robishaw, a local resident, admits to cutting through “The Yard” with his dog and said, “So, they’re in part of D.C. so they have to work within D.C. If they don’t want to be within D.C. then they can move the campus. I think we just need to work together and I don’t think it should be a he or there or here… It’s our community and that’s how it should be.”

Wait–what??

Check out Logic’s latest, which will accompany his upcoming novel, along with a synopsis of said novel for better understanding:

“Flynn is stuck—depressed, recently dumped, and living at his mom’s house. The supermarket was supposed to change all that. An ordinary job and a steady check. Work isn’t work when it’s saving you from yourself. But things aren’t quite as they seem in these aisles. Arriving to work one day to a crime scene, Flynn’s world collapses as the secrets of his tortured mind are revealed. And Flynn doesn’t want to go looking for answers at the supermarket.
