@Wale Featured In The Washington Post, Gets Today’s Cover

Wale got the front page cover in today’s Washington Post, as well as a large feature regarding his latest album, The Gifted.

Wale owns property in Atlanta, he sublets in New York and he tours constantly, leaving just a few months each year for the District, where he usually checks into luxury hotel suites like this one at the Mandarin Oriental in Southwest. When his road manager arrives from Maine Avenue Fish Market toting plastic-foam containers of shrimp and fried whiting, a room painted anyplace-beige suddenly smells like home.

“I’m getting my mambo sauce before I leave!” Wale says, and tugs a hundred dollar bill from the roll in his pocket, requesting seconds for the friends that keep pouring through the door.

Man Shot & Killed After Trying To Rob People Waiting In Line For Nike Lebrons

Damn. You think you’re going to get away with robbing folks waiting for shoes just like any other day, only for your meaningless life to end on the street. On the other hand, someone’s life still ended….over shoes. Poetic justice, indeed. From AJC:

Atlanta police said a man was shot and killed in Little Five Points early Saturday morning after he tried to rob a group of people waiting in line to buy the new, $180 sneakers, the Nike LeBron X EXT, which were released today.

One man in the line pulled out a gun and shot the would-be robber, witnesses told police, who have charged no one and consider the shooting to be self-defense.

The shooter then got back in line, according to Channel 2 Action News.

“He really stood up for all of us,” Taylor White told Channel 2. He said he was in line when the shooting happened. “I salute the homie that did that.”

Maria Sharapova Sends A Personal Shot To Serena Williams

From TMZ:

Serena fired the first shot in a Rolling Stone interview recently [yes, that same interview] where she ripped on Sharapova (she didn’t mention Maria by name, but the interviewer assumed it was her) by saying, “She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart — go for it.”

FYI — Maria is dating one of Serena’s rumored exes.

In a pre-Wimbledon press conference today, Sharapova took out her claws and got catty … bringing up the fact that Serena is rumored to be dating her tennis coach (who is possibly still married).

The Food Network Fires Paula Deen

Paula Deen

From CBS News:

The Food Network said Friday it’s dumping Paula Deen, barely an hour after the celebrity cook posted a videotaped apology online begging forgiveness from fans and critics troubled by her admission to having used racial slurs in the past.

“Food Network will not renew Paula Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month,” the statement said. Network representatives declined further comment.

Earl Sweatshirt Cancels Festival Dates Due To Pneumonia

From MTV:

Just what is going on with Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt? The rapper canceled on last weekend’s Bonnaroo festival citing pneumonia
and on Thursday Delaware’s Firefly Music Festival announced that Earl would be a no-show at their event as well.

His place will be taken by Schoolboy Q, but the second cancellation in two weeks has fans asking what’s up with OF’s most enigmatic member?

When reached for comment on Friday (June 21), a rep for Earl directed MTV News to his Twitter page, which read in part, “The worst part of pneumonia is that it won’t f—ing go away. It’s like dubstep,” Earl wrote in al l caps on Tuesday, seemingly confirming that he’s still suffering from the bacterial lung infection.

Jay-Z’s Million-Unit Deal With Samsung Won’t Count On Charts; Billboard’s Bill Werde Writes Open Letter

Jay-Z-Magna-Carta-Holy-Grail

As a lot of us (well, I know me and J. Cudder spoke on it) predicted, Billboard has announced that those million units picked up by Samsung will not count toward the total count…..meaning that cheatin’-ass Hov is gonna have to get that number 1 on the charts the good ol’ fashioned hard way like the rest of his peers. Billboard’s Editorial Director Bill Werde has actually written an open letter on the matter for you to check out, and we have included that letter below for you to enjoy.

A discussion of why the Samsung promotion isn’t counting on our albums chart — and what it means for the music business

“I don’t follow any guidelines,” Jay-Z says in “22 Twos,” one of the standout tracks on his 1996 debut, “Reasonable Doubt.” And there’s no reasonable doubt that Jay’s instincts to blaze trails have served him well. In particular, Jay has been one of the leaders of the revolution that has been unfolding for years between music and brands. Jay’s deals — from his hands and distinct voice telling the world about HP computers to his getting Budweiser to pay for a party in Philadelphia for 80,000 of his closest (and paying) friends — haven’t just put a lot of coin in Jay’s Roc-a-Wear jeans pockets. They’ve helped build Jay’s brand and paved a path for the business and brands to think even bigger about partnerships.

But occasionally, guidelines do come into play. “99 Problems” is a more apt reference point for my feelings some weeks when we get pitched by a label or a manager on a new, creative scheme to sell music to fans. “What if we bundled an album with a handset?” “What if every time a fan buys a T-shirt, they get a code to redeem a song?” “What if it’s a bottle of artist-branded perfume? A flashlight? A puppy?”

Requests come in and are considered carefully by Silvio Pietroluongo, our director of charts, and, if complications or implications rise to a certain level, by me, as Billboard’s editorial director. We strive to always fall on the side of moving the music business forward. A combination of constant crystal ball-gazing and this endless stream of requests from market innovators has led to pretty dynamic changes to our charts of late. We launched a Social 50 artists chart measuring Facebook, Twitter and other platforms. We included YouTube and Vevo streams into our historic Hot 100 songs chart, vaulting Baauer to the No. 1 position as “Harlem Shake” reached its viral peak. We created an On-Demand Songs chart to monitor services like Spotify, and include those streams into our songs charts as well. It’s a hustle out there in today’s music business, and Billboard wants to encourage innovation.

But our role as the chart of record is to set the rules, and hopefully even raise the level of play. It is in this spirit that I say it wasn’t as simple as you might think to turn down Jay-Z when he requested that we count the million albums that Samsung “bought” as part of a much larger brand partnership, to give away to Samsung customers. True, nothing was actually for sale — Samsung users will download a Jay-branded app for free and get the album for free a few days later after engaging with some Jay-Z content. The passionate and articulate argument by Jay’s team that something was for sale and Samsung bought it also doesn’t mesh with precedent.

Retailers doing one-way deals is a fact of life in the music business. When Best Buy committed to and paid upfront for 600,000 copies of Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” in 2008, those albums didn’t count as sales — not until music fans actually bought them. Had Jay-Z and Samsung charged $3.49 — our minimum pricing threshold for a new release to count on our charts — for either the app or the album, the U.S. sales would have registered. And ultimately, that’s the rub: The ever-visionary Jay-Z pulled the nifty coup of getting paid as if he had a platinum album before one fan bought a single copy. (He may have done even better than that — artists generally get paid a royalty percentage of wholesale. If Jay keeps every penny of Samsung’s $5 purchase price, he’d be more than doubling the typical superstar rate.) But in the context of this promotion, nothing is actually for sale.

Once something is — i.e., when Jay’s “Magna Carta Holy Grail” hits retailers and fans have the chance to express their support and interest by buying it, we’ll obviously count those sales. I’ve been told that label sources expect first-week sales of the album to be in line with the 400,000-450,000 his recent albums have shifted. That will almost certainly give Jay his lucky 13th No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

This isn’t the end of the story, however. Just because the Billboard 200 has been based purely on sales of an album for the entirety of the life of the chart doesn’t mean it must always remain so. Today I pay to listen to most of my albums on a subscription streaming service. Should those count in some way on our albums chart? And what about a world that Jay would argue is already here — one in which not enough fans are willing to pay for music that they want to listen to. Should artists be forced to choose between landing a big brand deal or landing a higher placement on the Billboard charts? The answer to that cannot and should not be “yes.”

In the coming weeks, we’ll talk through highly nuanced questions about our album charts with top managers, retailers, brands, publishers, label executives and others, just as we have with recent chart changes. These discussions may well lead to some changes to our charting rules — or they may not. It’s a process that plays out here at Billboard all the time — the very same one that led to the tweaks allowing streaming on the Hot 100.

Should we decide changes are in order, we’ll give the business advance warning so the game stays fair, and certainly run test charts with our data partner Nielsen SoundScan to ensure the charts are up to our historic standards of integrity and accuracy. Learning about Jay-Z’s enormous and admirable ambition two weeks ago simply didn’t leave time for this. But rest assured, Billboard will find the right balance and metric to chart brand-driven album distribution just as we’ve found the right metrics for everything from the 78s that played on your grandparents’ Victrola to your mom and dad’s 8-track to your kid’s fascination with the new Miley Cyrus video on Vevo.

After all, we’re a business, man. And as the next part goes: we’ll handle our business. Damn.

IS THIS A JOKE? Waka Flocka Flame To Executive Produce Amanda Bynes Album

sp_amanda_bynes_nt_130502_wg

I read earlier that Wyclef was supposed to be working with the current basketcase that is Amanda Bynes on some music — which he quickly refuted….no need to even read further on that — and I thought it was humorous for the moment. Now, Waka Flocka claims that he will be overseeing her project. From TMZ:

Waka — who runs Brick Squad Monopoly records — tells us, the deal hasn’t been signed yet but it’s basically in the bag … in fact, he’s already hired people to start penning Amanda’s songs.

Waka says he and Amanda FaceTime at least once a week and text every day — mostly about her rap career … but also about motivational stuff, like “keeping her head up from the haters.”

Waka tells us the album will be called “Shots” — adding, “It’s going to be crazy hot.” So far, there’s no projected release date.

As for whether Waka thinks there’s something a little off about Amanda … he said, “Not at all. She has it all together to me. She is cool as hell and ready for the rap world. I think she is going to kill the game.”

And just to make sure it’s a success … Waka says he’ll be featured on several of Amanda’s songs as well.

What do I think? I think that Waka found himself a possible one-way ticket to mainstream America….and maybe celebrity sex. But who am I to know?

Andrew W.K. Sets World Record With 24-Hour Drum Session

Get More:
O Music Awards

From MTV:

During this year’s O Music Awards’ 24-hour “Live Music Day,” which kicked off on Wednesday, W.K. spent the entire time drumming in an attempt to set a new world record.

After the arduous day came to a close, he was presented with a formal certificate for the Longest Drum Session in a Retail Store. (W.K. was posted up at the Oakley Store in Times Square for the duration of the drumathon.) MTV News caught up with the record holder to find out just how he got through it.

And while there was no shortage of protein bars or tacos (six hard shells, to be exact), W.K. insisted that it was the support of fellow guest drummers (some of whom included ?uestlove, Zac Hanson and Cuba Gooding Jr.), loved ones and fans that helped him endure.

But even with all the support from his peers, nothing could really prepare him for the range of emotion he felt. “Every emotion and every feeling from the most excited and happy to the most — I don’t wanna ever say I was sad, but in severe pain — like real physical pain,” he explained. “I didn’t anticipate that at all.”

Paula Deen Tries To Save Face Over ‘Nigger’ Controversy

lKR5JHc

Hey man, I’m still on my Nas shit…..there’s really no point in sugarcoating a word that we all know when we’re reading these articles. Just ask Louis C.K.. Below is Miss Deen’s response to what may possibly (although probably not, let’s be real) be the end of her career in entertainment. From USA Today:

Paula Deen continues to be under fire for admitting use of the n-word.

News broke on Wednesday that the celeb chef made the admission in court depositions involving a lawsuit filed by one her restaurant managers charging discrimination. When asked if she had ever used the n-word, Deen replied, “Yes, of course.” But, she added, “It’s been a very long time.”

Deen has been distancing herself from the remarks. Her lawyer issued a statement immediately saying Deen “does not condone” use of the word.

And today in a new statement, her rep tells USA TODAY that Deen “recounted having used a racial epithet in the past, speaking largely about a time in American history which was quite different than today. She was born 60 years ago when America’s South had schools that were segregated, different bathrooms, different restaurants and Americans rode in different parts of the bus. This is not today. To be clear Ms. Deen does not find acceptable the use of this term under any circumstance by anyone nor condone any form of racism or discrimination. “

George Zimmerman Gets An All-Female Jury In Trayvon Martin Murder Trial

George Zimmerman

Taken from USA Today, where you can also read more about the jury selection process

After nine days of questioning, a jury has been chosen for the trial of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin.

The jury of six women will decide whether Zimmerman, 29, is guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin, 17, in a case that captured the nation’s attention last year.

Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, said as the jury was settled, “This is probably as critical if not more critical than the evidence.”

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder. The neighborhood watch volunteer says he killed the teen in self-defense after being attacked. Prosecutors say Zimmerman confronted Martin because he was African American.

Diddy Inks Deal With Time Warner Cable For Revolt TV

Hov isn’t the only one in Hip-Hop making some serious business moves. Diddy has officially locked in his channel — Revolt TV — with Time Warner Cable; viewers will be able to tune in this Fall. Move over, Oprah (and BET, I guess)….from Mr. Combs himself:

“This is a landmark distribution deal that demonstrates Time Warner Cable’s commitment to bringing a platform for music artists and fans to their subscribers…it positions Revolt to come out of the gate strong, and we look forward to igniting the passion of initial audiences across the U.S.”

UPDATE: Judging from the below Tweets, it’s not looking too positive (the first is from his manager, so we’ll be using it as a confirmation). The rumor also is that Snupe was killed over a dice game (see below). We’ll keep you updated on any news regarding the situation as well.

****************************************

THIS IS A RUMOR! The source of the story is Illseed on AllHipHop.com, and we over here are hoping it’s not true:

I have some very sad news to “report.” If its a rumor, that would be a blessing. But, I think this is true, based on my intel. Lil Snupe was just signed to Meek Mill’s DreamChaser’s Records this year. Now, I am hearing that he has been found dead. I don’t have a lot of details, but I heard he was shot by some haters. But, the young spitter is no longer here and slowing the the RIPs are rolling in.
