Dr. Dre and The Lucrative Business of Not Rapping

Sean Combs and Sean John – The notoriously entrepreneurial artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, P. Diddy and just Diddy made his name(s) producing Top 40 smash hits with Notorious B.I.G., but he made his money manufacturing menswear. Launched in 1998, Diddy’s Sean John is an award-winning clothing company that’s helped Combs become the richest rapper in the world. Along with his record business and stake in Ciroc vodka, Sean John has helped Combs build a $475 million fortune. “My brand is rocket fuel. It would take this brand 10 years to get to where I can take it in one year,” Combs told The New York Times in 2008. “I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t want to do just endorsements. I want ownership.”
Jay-Z and Rocawear – Trailing Combs just slightly, the Brooklyn native is worth about $450 million, almost half of which can be traced back to Jay-Z’s fashion line Rocawear. Jay-Z founded the company in 1999 with his Roc-a-fella Records co-founder Damon Dash and after several profitable years sold the brand $204 million in 2007, just a couple of months after an investigation found dog’s hair in Rocawear faux fur coats. In the meantime, Jay-Z has built out his empire with ownership stakes in the 40/40 nightclub chain, Carol’s Daughter beauty products, and J Hotels, a real estate venture. “My brands are an extension of me,” Jay-Z said in a 2009 interview. “They’re close to me. It’s not like running GM, where there’s no emotional attachment.”

T.I.’s Final Message From Prison

I hope that he is still relevant. He supposedly gets out next month.

What up world? This will be my last message from Forrest City. Just reaching out and sending my love, respect and appreciation to all who have been ridin’ with me throughout this chapter in my life and not just recently but since all the things started happening one after another back in ’06. From Big Phil’s murder to my beautiful little angel Leiah being called home to heaven, to my arrest in ’07, the 1st prison sentence in ’09, to this last journey that I’m nearing the end of. A lot of people who are aware of all that has happened to me in my life say that there aren’t many men who could have endured and withstood so much pain, pressure and turmoil while managing to remain sane and keep their wits about them. I must say that I wouldn’t have been able to do so without God’s grace and having a strong support system behind me every step of the way. So often we spend time acknowledging the presence of “haters” and all the negativity they send our way but we don’t take the time to acknowledge and appreciate all the ones who love and support us and supply us with the positive energy we need to overcome. We complain about the pain so much that we don’t even notice how much stronger, wiser and better of a person the suffering has allowed us to become. I heard Pac say once “To live is to suffer and to survive is to find meaning in that suffering.” I later found out it came from an author by the name of Friedrich Nietzsche. When I heard Pac say that it was just some hard shit to hear your favorite rapper say before he kicked a verse. Now that I’ve gone through it and grown from it those words have a real true meaning to me. I know this won’t be my last battle with adversity but it has truly prepared me for whatever else may come in the future. For that also I’m thankful. Now it goes without saying that I hate I had to come back to prison for these 10 months but I am truly grateful for the knowledge, growth and understanding I’ve received from the experience.

Next time you hear from me I’ll be back out there with you. Doing for those who can’t do for themselves and speaking for those whose voices are never heard. When I touch down, I’m going all the way back to square one, like I’m fresh in the game and never sold a record. Back on some I’M SERIOUS, TRAP MUZIK shit… But until then RESPECT to all who deserve it. I’ll be back at you in a minute.

MC Breed Sues Jon Connor Over Remake; Jon Connor Responds

Response (and freestyle) above….original news story of the lawsuit is below, courtesy of Hip Hop Blog.

The widow of late rapper MC Breed is suing young Flint emcee Jon Connor over a tribute track that samples Breed’s 1991 classic “Ain’t No Future in Your Frontin’.” MC Breed was the first rapper from Flint to gain national attention, but once Breed’s widow, Natasha, saw it was being sold on iTunes without having given her approval, she filed suit.

“It’s kind of ironic because the title of their song is ‘No Frontin’ and I need them cats to do just that, stop frontin’,” she said. “’Jon Connor who?’ I seen the whole campaign, I know who’s sponsoring the whole project, I know who’s behind him. I show Flint town love and everybody that knows me knows that I’m about straight up loyalty.”

. “Immediately when I heard it, I did not approve for several reasons. Here you have a song that’s a 24-year-old classic hit. This song paved the way for the Midwest, period. Put Flint on the map, Michigan on the map, opened up the gates for everybody on that end of the map,” she continued. “You just can’t take and say whatever you want to do with anybody’s material, number one. Some stuff that can’t be touched.”

Amy Winehouse Robbed after Dealth

A ghoulish friend of the late singer Amy Winehouse robbed her house in the days after her death, it has emerged.

Amy’s livid father Mitch says he understands it was one of his daughter’s acquaintances that took copies of unreleased tracks, lyric books and letters.

The 60-year-old ex-cabbie promise to find the predatory culprits when he returned from a family holiday soon.

About 20 people – friends, family, security and police – had access to the home since Amy died.

Among the items management are unable to account for are one of the singer’s favourite guitars and lyrics scribbled for her third album.

The missing items will already be worth a fortune to collectors and will only appreciate in value as the years go by.

A member of Amy’s circle told today’s Sun: “This is such a sickening shock to the family. That someone would stoop so low. They can’t get their heads around it.

“Mitch is livid. The family, record label and management are months away from deciding what to do with any unreleased music.

“For that to be taken out of their hands is horrible.”

And Amy’s ‘friends’ aren’t the only ones trying to cash in on her death.

UK media has reported that Amy’s ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil plans to write a tell-all book about his life with Amy.

Fielder-Civil, who is currently in prison serving time for burglary and a firearm offence, was banned from attending his ex-wife’s funeral at the end of August.

He’s also understood to have countless hours of never-seen-before video footage of the star which he will look to release.
