Karla Redding-Andrews (Otis Redding’s Daughter) Speaks On ‘Otis’

Without speaking too much about my feelings for the song, Billboard was nice enough to speak to Otis Redding’s daughter on the song and the sample’s clearing:

When did you first hear about “Otis”?
We first heard about the song in early July, end of June. Concord Music Group has the masters and Bill Belmont and Michele Smith from Concord brought it to us. There was a back and forth about whether the name of the song would be “Otis” or “Otis Redding.” And we just wanted to make sure lyrics and references in the song worked with the legacy of my father. To have two current, legendary artists use the legendary music of Otis Redding-we were quite honored.

Late June to now — that’s a pretty quick turnaround, isn’t it?
It was pretty fast and all came together really quick. With these talented musicians they have so many songs. It’s not until it comes time to pull together a project and they know what songs are going to be on the album that they look to get all the clearances before the song leaks. They brought it to us first and we really appreciate that respect.

Did you ever meet with Jay-Z or West during the process?
No, we never met with them. It all went through the record companies. That’s the nature of the business and it’s probably better that way. [If we met with them], we would probably bring more personal considerations into it. But this is a wonderful opportunity. We really like the song and the swagger elements that are in the song. It speaks to the star that Otis was in his day.

Drake Reveals Three Take Care Tracks In Rolling Stone

You can check out more here, but an excerpt is below:
He cues up several tracks in various states of completion, all of which sit squarely in the sparse, somber register that’s become his trademark. “Shot for Me,” the likely album opener, is a marvel of melancholy bravado: He sings “Bitch, I’m the man” in a moan that undercuts the brag, over a beat (courtesy of Shebib) that pairs aching synthesizer notes with an exhilarating barrage of high-hats. Other highlights include “Free Spirit,” featuring Rick Ross and the refrain “Tat my name on you so I know it’s real,” and “The Real Her,” a narcotically woozy love song with detuned pianos and a Lil Wayne guest spot. Drake is also looking forward to collaborating with Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. buzzy R&B gloomster the Weeknd — and, if he gets his wish, veteran beatsmith DJ Premier, Florence and the Machine’s Florence Welch, and the xx’s Jamie Smith. “No matter who’s on it, it goes through the Drake filter,” Shebib says. “He’s so hands-on about how everything sounds.”

KREAYSHAWN live at a Secret Show 07/21/11

Take it away Jeff R.
I couldn’t get a good read on the demographic. Sure, there were the girls in loud outfits, dying to look interesting; there were the boys in bar mitzvah rave glasses and flimsy tank tops. By the bar, though, I talked to an unshaven average guy from Mount Vernon who had won tickets through an XXL contest. He had heard about the giveaway through Action Bronson’s Twitter. Curiosity knows no bounds, apparently.
