Kendrick Lamar Might Have A ‘Good Kid, m.A.A.d City’ Movie In The Works…

kendrick-microphone

All of this is hearsay and (probable) speculation, but it would really be dope if that album were to come to life on the big (or small) screen. From AllHipHop’s Rumors page:

Aw shoot. It looks like Kendrick is going to take his stock through the roof really soon. I’m hearing Kendrick is going to be working on a “good.kid.maad.city” movie with Spike Lee. They reportedly had a meeting over the All Star Weekend with Top Dawg, who is the CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment (T.D.E.) The movie will reportedly chronicle the life of Top Dawg, who was the subject matter for that great album. Last year, there was a rumor that Shia LaBeouf was doing this, but I think it was just because he was fawning over Kendrick last year.

Bonnaroo Explains Booking Kanye West For Another Festival

Bonnaroo-1

I forgot all about this, but Bonnaroo had previously had Kanye West headline back in 2008, which didn’t exactly end on a high note. That year, Kanye didn’t even go on until after 4am in the morning, and ended up giving a half-ass performance before blaming Bonnaroo, the previous act (Pearl Jam) and pretty much anyone within eyeshot for the debacle.

Fast forward to 2014, and Superfly (the festival’s promoter) has once again booked the Chicago emcee/producer….below is a message released explaining exactly why they decided to so:

First and foremost, we think Kanye is one of the most prolific and groundbreaking artists of this generation. He’s hugely influential. His albums are as great and as acclaimed as they get. He’s also a great live performer. He takes a lot of chances and he’s adventurous with the live space. All those things are what Bonnaroo performers are about. That’s why we booked him [in 2008].

Everyone has moved on—it’s in the past. We’re happy he wants to come back to Bonnaroo and is embracing this. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to look forward, and we think it’s a great opportunity for the Bonnaroo community to show what it’s made of. It goes back to what Bonnaroo stands for: It’s about having good time, radiating positivity and that whole message. We couldn’t be more excited about what we think has the potential to be another historic Bonnaroo moment. – Superfly’s Rick Farman, as explained to Relix

Kurt Cobain Gets A New Statue, Holiday In Washington….& The Media Clowns It

Spotted on SeattlePI:

Thursday’s first “Kurt Cobain Day” in the grunge legend’s hometown of Aberdeen might have signaled a thawing in the fraught relationship between the town and Cobain’s legacy.

But then it happened. Nirvana fans looking on from throughout the country were left unimpressed. Some are even upset about a statue unveiled at the Aberdeen Museum of History and the way it portrays Cobain with a tear pouring from his right eye.

Thursday’s event, complete with live music from a local band and appearances by a few figures from Cobain’s past, was arguably Aberdeen’s biggest public acknowledgement of serving as the backdrop of the musician’s tumultuous childhood.

Aberdeen Mayor Bill Simpson said the town was “remiss for a long time” for not celebrating Cobain’s legacy sooner.

Simpson announced Feb. 20, what would have been Cobain’s 47th birthday, as “Kurt Cobain Day” not long after neighboring Hoqiuam, where Cobain once briefly lived, announced a tribute day for the frontman set for April 10, the day Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

“We hope this is just as big as Graceland, eventually,” Simpson said in interviews, referencing Elvis Presley’s celebrated mansion in Memphis.

But when Thursday evening rolled around, the event was criticized for being underwhelming and off the mark.

There’s the statue. Local artist Randi Hubbard began working on the statue about 20 years ago, not long after Cobain committed suicide in Seattle. She said during Thursday’s event that her own mother’s death moved her to sculpt the statue.

It then sat in storage in her muffler shop after the Aberdeen city government refused to accept it.

Now that it’s finally out of storage and part of a local museum exhibit commemorating Cobain, fans are mocking and disparaging it all over the Internet, saying it doesn’t capture Cobain’s true spirit or likeness.

Then there’s the KING/5 report on the event, which fans found offensive. Anchor Dennis Bounds and reporter Drew Mikkelsen both described Cobain as a “well-known heroin addict who shot himself 20 years ago” instead of the man responsible for the grunge movement and putting Seattle on the musical map.

Mikkelsen also made a point of bringing up Cobain’s arrests in Aberdeen for vandalism and trespassing.

The remarks contrasted oddly with Simpson’s fawning remarks about Cobain, making it appear as though he stood alone in wanting to celebrate the town’s most famous figure.

Checkmate, Hoquiam?

Here’s a wrap-up of what music journalists and fans had to say about the event:

“(T)he cement edifice shows the ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ singer with a tear coming down from his eye, looking pretty ‘Jesus wept’-y.” —SPIN magazine, on the statue

“Aberdeen Honors ‘Kurt Cobain Day’ With Bizarre Crying Statue” —Pitchfork headline

“As it turns out, not everyone is a fan of Kurt Cobain Day, especially anchor Dennis Bounds, who introduced Cobain not as ‘Nirvana frontman and newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member,’ but rather as ‘the well-known heroin addict who shot himself 20 years ago.’ The report itself wasn’t much better, as it included an interview with a random fan and focused way too much on Cobain’s vices than his many contributions. Cobain was ‘not exactly George Washington,’ the reporter so brilliantly noted.” —Consequence of Sound

“(T)he local news coverage from network KING 5 … essentially mocked the entire tribute and made tasteless jabs at Cobain himself.” —Rolling Stone

“(U)m, the bar has not been set particularly high for Hoquiam. … It seems a little unimpressive, doesn’t it?” —Stereogum

“Mayor Bill Simpson’s efforts were modest, highlighting Cobain’s legacy through a small event that unveiled a statue that was a touch more maudlin than the deceased artist probably would have liked. And even aside from that tear-strewn effigy, the event proved controversial, hinting at why Cobain railed against his hometown all those years ago.” —A.V. Club

“So the city, which is about 80 miles outside of Seattle, is honoring the late frontman (who would have been 47-years-old yesterday) with a statue … that kind of looks like the lead singer of Nickelback crying?” —San Francisco Chronicle

“Oh no, no no no. Crying Kurt Cobain is like the Weeping Angels on Doctor Who, but more horrifying.” —Uproxx

Facebook Buys Whatsapp For $19 Billion

From CNN Money:

In a play to dominate messaging on phones and the Web, Facebook has acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion.

That’s a stunning sum for the five-year old company. But WhatsApp has been able to hold its weight against messaging heavyweights like Twitter, Google and Microsoft’s Skype. WhatsApp has upwards of 450 million users, and it is adding an additional million users every day.

Referring to WhatsApp’s soaring growth, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on a conference call, “No one in the history of the world has done anything like that.”

WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app for smartphones, according to OnDevice Research.

Buying WhatsApp will only bolster Facebook’s already strong position in the crowded messaging world. Messenger, Facebook’s a standalone messaging app for mobile devices, is second only to WhatsApp in its share of the smartphone market.

@Griminal Announces That He’s Quitting Music

When I first started JUKEBOX:UK in 2012, Griminal was definitely one of the favourites on the website without question, and while he began to polarise himself by exploring new territory musically, we over here were still always looking forward to the artist’s next release.

With that said, Griminal has announced that after his forthcoming EPs, he’s hanging up the microphone and closing his studio doors for good. Check out the tweets above.

Lebron James May Or May Not Be Starring In A Sequel To ‘Space Jam’

As you can see above, Lebron isn’t locked down exactly, but between much speculation and past interest from Bron Bron himself, you never know. From Deadline:

Broadcasting veteran Dick Ebersol‘s sons have come on board to develop the sequel to 1996 animated/live-action hit Space Jam as a starring vehicle for James, the studio confirmed.

Charlie Ebersol, who already has a good relationship with the NFL through his NFL Characters Unite series on USA Network, is about ready to do the same with the NBA. He has been brought on to the produce the picture through his production company, The Company, from a script by his brother Willie Ebersol. The latter won an Emmy for the London Olympics. This is his first screenplay.

Azealia Banks’ Soundcloud Shut Down For Copyright Infringement; Twitter Goes In

Azealia Banks recently took to Twitter to let those who don’t listen to her music (obviously) know that her Soundcloud has been terminated.

It appears that — in addition to things like this — her tune ‘Fuck Up The Fun’ was reportedly the nail in her music channel’s coffin. Others are also speculating that her latest beef with her label Universal may have something to do with it as well.

Nonetheless, leave it to the “haters” to make a bit of humor out of the whole thing via Twitter (scroll through the above gallery).

If only she solidified her career before she showed the world who she really is…

Ludacris Is Reportedly Blaming His Failure To Pay Child Support On Actor Paul Walker’s Death

luda

From TMZ:

Ludacris can’t afford to pay thousands of dollars in child support — and he’s blaming his financial woes on the death of his “Fast and Furious” co-star Paul Walker.

Ludacris was in court Wednesday with his baby mama, Tamika Fuller … who’s demanding Luda pay her $15K a month to take care of his 2-month-old baby daughter, Cai.

But Luda went to court and told the judge … he was counting on “Fast and Furious 7” money to make his payments, and the movie is now on hold so his payday went away.

Luda claims he can only pay $1,800 a month — confessing he only made around $55K for 2013.

The judge split the baby down the middle, ordering Luda to pay 7K a month for now … while hizzoner reviews all the financial docs.

By the way … Tyrese also claimed relative poverty in his child support case because of Walker’s death.

Cee-Lo Green Is Leaving ‘The Voice’

From the New York Times:

“The Voice” has seen the last of CeeLo Green — at least as a regular coach on the hit NBC singing contest.

Mr. Green told Ellen DeGeneres in an interview for her syndicated talk show to be broadcast on Wednesday that he would not be returning to “The Voice” after appearing in four of its first six editions. (The sixth, which is taping episodes, begins on Monday without Mr. Green.) “I’m not coming back at all,” he told Ms. DeGeneres.

NBC confirmed the news in a statement, which did not specify the plan to replace Mr. Green, whose real name is Thomas DeCarlo Callaway. Mr. Green had been part of the original foursome of coaches on “The Voice,” along with Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton.

The singer Usher has replaced Mr. Green in the show’s revolving chairs both last year and this year, but NBC executives said on Wednesday that the network was not ready to announce its plans for future versions of the show, though it said a plan was in place.

The departure was described by both sides as entirely amicable. Mr. Green has a development deal for future shows with the network. He said in the interview with Ms. DeGeneres: “I have so many other things that I want to do. I haven’t released an album in four years.”

In a statement released by NBC, Mr. Green said: “There are numerous reasons that led to this decision, which has been amicably reached with NBC, but I’m excited to be developing several other ideas with the network and my association with NBC remains strong.”

In his own statement, Paul Telegdy, the president of NBC’s division overseeing reality programs, said: “CeeLo Green has been an instrumental part of the success of ‘The Voice’ and we deeply appreciate all his contributions. We’re looking forward to working with him on other upcoming projects that will tap into both his musical and entertainment expertise.”

In October, Mr. Green was arrested on a felony drug charge in Los Angeles and accused of supplying a woman with the drug ecstasy. He has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Eminem, Dr. Dre & Jimmy Iovine Cover XXL

eminem

From XXL:

This month’s issue of XXL celebrates Beats Electronics with the first ever magazine cover featuring Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine and Eminem. Beats By Dre initially took over the industry with their headphones six years ago. Now Beats is at it again with the brand’s newest endeavor, Beats Music, a music streaming service which focuses on the curation of playlists by genre experts (including XXL). Eminem, one of the biggest artists under Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine’s direction, launched the promo for his most recent solo album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 with a Beats Music commercial, kicking off the campaign for the service, which is now available in the iTunes store.

In the magazine, Dre—celebrating his birthday today—Jimmy and Em reflect on the impact they have made on music of all genres though the Beats brand and how the streaming service could very well change the way fans consume their music.

Besides special interviews with three of the biggest dogs in hip-hop, the issue also features stories on ScHoolboy Q, who drops his solo debut Oxymoron next Tuesday 2/25. Hit-Boy and his HS87 group discuss what they’re cooking up, 10 rappers break down the most difficult verse they ever wrote and Show & Proves on Lil Bibby, Vic Mensa and Chinx, plus much more.

The magazine is on stands nationally on March 11.

PIC: Nas & Cam’ron Make Amends

camron-nas

#QB #HARLEM #UwasntThere

Many people forget that Cam’ron was very much in the middle of the legendary JAY Z/Nas feud….the good news is, much like Mr. Carter, the beef between Nasir and Killa has come to an end as well. From Miss Info:

Cam’ron and Nas just happened to be headed from Las Vegas to New York City on the same flight. And that’s all it took to thaw a decade old rivalry. Cam was out in Vegas to support Dame and Jim Jones for their Vamp Life and Million Dollar Racers clothing line at the Agenda Trade Show.

According to my source, Nas and Cam saw each other, got to talking without any awkwardness or old tension. The photo wasn’t forced. Respect all around. And the best part, there was even talk of future collaboration.

Viewers Subjected To Vicious Racist Attack On Glasgow TV Show (Video)

Spotted on the Daily Record:

HUNDREDS of thousands of Scots last night watched the shocking moment a street busker was subjected to a violent racist attack in Glasgow city centre.

Francis Muir’s shameful assault on the street entertainer known as Melo was shown in the first episode of BBC Scotland series The Street.

In the clip Muir can be heard calling the African busker a “black b******”.

He then approaches Melo and says: “What about the f****** British or the homeless? You are taking the f****** p***. You are milking our country for thousands, ya f****** black b******.”

Muir and a friend, who cannot be named for legal reasons, aim punches and kicks at Melo who is forced to defend himself with a metal trolley he uses for moving his music gear.

BBC bosses today revealed that 348,000 people tuned in to the programme at 10.35pm last night.

We told this week how the incident shocked politicians who have called for a national debate about racism in Scotland.

MSP Graeme Pearson, Labour’s Shadow Justice secretary and a former police chief, said: “The documentary has caught the type of incident which, sadly, occurs probably most evenings somewhere in Scotland.

“It is symptomatic of a culture we need to tackle, in terms of racism and sectarianism – although at least those responsible in this instance were arrested.

“We need to come to terms with what is happening on our streets and change it.”

Muir was eventually sentenced to a total of 10 months in prison for the attack and a separate incident in which he abused a female Asian police officer while out on bail. He has since moved from Glasgow to Kirkcaldy.

And in a brazen attempt to excuse his behaviour, the former nightclub bouncer claimed he was “a really nice guy” when contacted by the Daily Record this week.

He said claimed he only did it because he was “in a bad place” after splitting from his wife of six years.
