Venezuelan Opposition Leader Surrenders Amid Anti-Government Protests
From CNN:
Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez is set to appear in court Wednesday, a day after he turned himself in to authorities amid anti-government demonstrations in the country.
Charges against him include murder, terrorism and arson in connection with the protests, according to his party, Popular Will.
Lopez denies the accusations, the party said in a statement calling for witnesses of the protests to send their own accounts of what happened to be used in his defense.
“The last thing he said to me was for me to not forget what he is going through,” his wife, Lilian Tintori de Lopez said in an interview with CNN en Español. “Not forget that he is arrested for things that he has asked for: the liberation of political prisoners, liberation of students, no more oppression, no more violence.”
She called on his supporters to join her at the justice building for his appearance Wednesday morning.

Protests In Ukraine Turn Deadly; 25 Dead & Many More Injured
You can read more over at CNN:
They’ve given up their ground before — voluntarily, as a political concession. But that seems to be over.
After the deaths of 25 people in clashes a day earlier, Ukrainian protesters are prepared to stand and fight again Wednesday.
Police want to clear them out of central Kiev. Some of them died trying to stay put Tuesday — using projectiles and burning barricades to keep security forces at bay at Kiev’s Maidan, or Independence Square.
It was the deadliest day in the months-long standoff between the government and opposition leaders.
Thousands of demonstrators have packed Independence Square since November, when President Viktor Yanukovych reversed a decision to sign a trade deal with the European Union and instead turned toward Russia.
The unrest intensified after an anti-protest law went into effect. Throngs of demonstrators took to the streets to protest the law.
Police and protesters were among Tuesday’s dead. A journalist and a government employee died, too.
More than 240 others were hospitalized, Ukraine’s health ministry said.
Overnight, demonstrators stocked up, passing stones hand to hand, filling Molotov cocktails and stoking flaming barricades with wood and tires.
They prepared a makeshift compressed-air cannon to catapult the projectiles into police ranks.
Hundreds of others came out to give moral support to those holding the square and to add their numbers to the throng wanting to keep the opposition movement alive.Corporate lawyer and iReporter Volodymyr Solohub was one of them. Whenever police threaten to clear the Maidan he goes there.
Tuesday, he watched as protesters rushed injured people from the front lines to medics.
“Some of them had broken hands, and blood was flowing down their faces,” he said Wednesday.
Barrages of stun grenades shattered the air around him through the night.“When it goes off, the whole area vibrates,” he said. But the barricades held, and it made him happy.
When the sun rose Wednesday, smoke was still rising from them into the sky.

PICS: Justin Bieber Is Reportedly Moving Into Atlanta Mansion
From TMZ:
Atlanta residents beware — Justin Bieber has been scoping out houses in Atlanta … and one of the mansions he’s eyeing is on BLACKLAND ROAD.
The 7-bedroom 16,000 sq. ft. house is located in the exclusive Buckhead district — where Usher currently lives. Young Jeezy also calls Buckhead home.
It’s listed for $10.95 million.
As we reported, Bieber wants to move to Atlanta to be closer to a thriving hip hop community — and this house is extra special because it meets Bieber’s list of Atlanta real estate criteria. After his Calabasas fiasco, sources tell us, Bieber’s demands include an estate that:
— Can’t be visible from the street (preferably secluded on 5+ acres)
— A minimum of 10,000+ sq. ft.
— Lists for between $4 and $10 mil.So far, we’re told Bieber has breezed through multiple estates, and he’s looking to buy ASAP.
As we previously reported … Bieber is selling his Calabasas mansion and he’s looking at large, private estates 20 miles from where he currently lives. Yes, he can afford 2 houses.
FYI — Buckhead is considered the old money part of ATL — so turn down your hearing aids.

George Zimmerman Flees Miami After $10,000 Death Threat
You can also check out a much bigger bounty on Zimmerman’s life from the Black Panthers below, which happened two years ago. TMZ reports:
George Zimmerman fled Miami after someone threatened there was a huge bounty on his head.
Zimmerman taped an interview last Tuesday with Univision and Fusion, and then took his girlfriend, her kid and his brother to the beach. While they were catching some rays, people noticed him, started harassing him, and then someone shouted out George had a $10,000 bounty on his head.
We’re told it freaked him out and they all retreated to the hotel, but the crowd followed them.
Security swept their room to make sure no one tampered with their stuff and then stood guard throughout the day and night. We’re told Zimmerman did his CNN interview early the next morning and then beat it … literally fleeing Miami.
Fact is … the bounty threat seems somewhat real. There’s a Black Panthers video online in which one of the leaders puts a $1 MILLION bounty on Zimmerman’s head.

Panel Reveals Evidence Showing ‘Crimes Of Humanity’ In North Korea; Leader Could Face Trial
(CNN) — A stunning catalog of torture and the widespread abuse of even the weakest of North Koreans reveal a portrait of a brutal state “that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world,” a United Nations panel reported Monday.
North Korean leaders employ murder, torture, slavery, sexual violence, mass starvation and other abuses as tools to prop up the state and terrorize “the population into submission,” the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea said in its report.
The commission traced the abuses directly to the highest levels of the North Korean government while simultaneously blaming world leaders for sitting on their hands amid untold agony.
“The suffering and tears of the people of North Korea demand action,” commission Chairman Michael Kirby told reporters.
The group said it would refer its findings to the International Criminal Court for possible prosecution. It also sent a letter warning North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that he could face prosecution for crimes against humanity.
The government of North Korea — also known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, or DPRK — rejected the report as a ginned-up effort to undermine its government.
“It is nothing more than an instrument of political plot aimed at sabotaging the socialist system by defaming the dignified images of the DPRK and creating an atmosphere of international pressure under the pretext of ‘human rights protection,'” the government said in a prepared statement.
The U.N. panel released its 400-page report after hearing from more than 320 witnesses in public hearings and private interviews.
North Korea did not respond to the commission’s request for access to the country and information about its human rights practices, according to the commission.
One witness, a survivor of a North Korean prison camp, told the commission of seeing a guard beat a nearly starving woman who had recently given birth, then force the woman to drown her baby.
Others told of being imprisoned for watching soap operas, trying to find food for their families, traveling without permission or having family members considered suspect by the government.
“Because we saw so many people die, we became so used to it,” one prison camp survivor told the commission. “I’m sorry to say that we became so used to it that we didn’t feel anything.”
Kirby that he hoped the report would galvanize the world to act.
“We cannot say we didn’t know,” he said. “We now do know.”

Baltimore Ravens’ Ray Rice & Fiancee Arrested After Apparent Physical Altercation
From New York Daily News:
Ravens running back and Rutgers product Ray Rice and his fiancee were both arrested after getting into an altercation at an Atlantic City Casino early Saturday morning, police said.
The incident occurred at the Revel Casino and was caught on surveillance footage, according to Atlantic City police. Both Rice, 27, and his fiancee, Janay Palmer, 26, were charged with domestic violence-simple assault and released with a summons.
“After reviewing surveillance footage it appeared both parties were involved in a physical altercation,” a police statement said. “The complaint summons indicates that both (Rice) and Palmer struck each other with their hands. The responding officer signed a simple assault complaint against both Rice and Palmer.”
The statement added that both Palmer and Rice “refused any medical attention as no injuries were reported by either party. The couple were transported to the Atlantic City Police Department holding facility and charged.”
Sgt. Monica McMenamin told NBC10.com in Philadelphia that police had responded to the incident at 2:51 a.m. on Saturday.
Rice’s attorney, Andrew Alperstein, told the Baltimore Sun that the incident was “a very minor phsyical altercation.”
Michael Diamondstein, who, according to the Sun, also represents Rice, told the paper, “There was an argument that included Ray. I can’t give any specifics because we haven’t seen the document yet.”
The Ravens released a statement Sunday night saying, “We are aware of the Friday night situation with Ray Rice and his fiancee. We have spoken with Ray, and know that they returned home together after being detained.”
Scott Russo, director of operations for the Royal Jelly Burlesque Nightclub located inside the Revel, told the Sun that Rice had been with a group of approximately eight people earlier in the night.
“When he was here, they were having a great time — no issues,” said Russo, who added that Rice had been to the club before. “(Rice) was very nice to our staff.
“We took care of him like we do any of the celebrities that come in.”
Rice, who signed a 5-year, $35 million deal with Baltimore in July 2012, is coming off a disappointing 2013 campaign, his sixth year in the league.
The New Rochelle product averaged just 3.1 yards per carry and scored just four touchdowns. Rice was a second-round pick out of Rutgers in the 2008 draft.

PICS: Council Seemingly Trolls Disabled Girl After Installing Slalom-Style Ramp In Her Front Yard
This is funny, but not funny. But still funny. From Telegraph:
The mother of a disabled girl have criticised housing officials after they installed a £40,000 eyesore ‘slalom-style’ ramp over ten levels outside her home.
Clare Lally, 33, spent two years campaigning for improved access for her wheelchair-bound daughter Katie, 7, after the council gave them a home at the top of three flights of stairs.
Officials eventually relented, but Ms Lally was left shocked by their solution – a £40,000, 10-level chicane-like steel ramp which almost fills their whole front garden.
She said: “There must have been a better solution. The council could have gone about the whole project in a more sensible way.”
“We had to move to the house to get easier access for Katie and we have fought all these months to get that.
“The council said this was the only option to fit something into the garden because of building regulations.
“It is a lot easier but I don’t believe that the council weren’t able to do something else.
“We weren’t fighting for a massive steel ramp – we just wanted to improve Katie’s quality of life.
“What they have built is something which I would never have expected a local council to do. We have to open our blinds and look at it every day.”
Katie suffers from bulbar palsy – caused by complications after she and twin Holly were born prematurely – and is confined to a wheelchair.
West Dunbartonshire Council have not yet completed the final costings of the ramp at the home in Clydebank, near Glasgow, but it is estimated to be around £40,000.
The ramp is so big that Ms Lally said she cannot see the bottom of it from her front window.
Co-pilot Hijacks An Ethiopian Airlines Plane, Then Flies to Geneva Seeking Asylum
From CNN:
A co-pilot on an Ethiopian Airlines flight bound for Rome hijacked the airliner early Monday morning and flew it to Geneva, Switzerland, looking for asylum.
The man, an Ethiopian in his early 30s, was arrested when the plane landed at Geneva International Airport, police said. The 202 passengers and crew aboard the Boeing 767-300 were not harmed.
It was a welcome outcome from the last time an Ethiopian Airlines was hijacked.
In 1996, 125 people died after a hijacked Ethiopian Airlines crashed in the Indian Ocean after running out of fuel. In that case, the hijackers were seeking asylum in Australia.
In Monday’s incident, Flight 702 had taken off from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa and was headed to Rome, the airline said.
The co-pilot took control of the plane when the pilot went to the restroom, said Swiss police spokesman Jean-Philippe Brandt.
The co-pilot, who was not named, closed the fortified door, police said. Instead of Rome, he then steered the plane toward Geneva.
At one point, as the plane hovered over Geneva’s airspace several times, he asked the control tower:
“And you have to give us lastly permission on board for asylum.”
“Yes I know,” the tower responded. “Sorry, but we are still waiting for the response. We are trying our best to get you the response, sir.”
Eventually, the plane landed at Geneva International Airport.
“I will be coming out via the window,” the co-pilot told the control tower.
He then escaped through the cockpit window using a rope, and surrendered to police, Brandt said.He was unarmed, authorities said.
“His act has been motivated by the fact that he feels threatened in his county and wants to make an asylum claim in Switzerland,” Swiss police spokesman Philippe Grangean said.
The passengers were not threatened or put in danger, police said.
Ethiopian Airlines, in a statement, would only say the plane was “forced to proceed” to the airport.
During the incident, Geneva International Airport was shut down. It reopened later Monday morning.
INSENSITIVE? NBC Brings Olympian Bode Miller To Tears In Post-Game Interview
You can check out the New York Times full recap of what happened below, as well as the responses from fans, peers, NBC (who released a statement) and even Bode Miller himself:
UPDATE, MONDAY, 9:15 A.M. Battered by criticism of Christin Cooper’s interview of Bode Miller online after it was broadcast Sunday night, NBC released a statement on Monday.
“Our intent was to convey the emotion that Bode Miller was feeling after winning his bronze medal,” a spokesman for the network said. “We understand how some viewers thought the line of questioning went too far, but it was our judgment that his answers were a necessary part of the story. We’re gratified that Bode has been publicly supportive of Christin Cooper and the overall interview.”
Indeed, Miller came to Cooper’s defense in a pair of posts on Twitter on Monday in Sochi, and expanded on those comments in an interview on NBC’s “Today” with Matt Lauer.
“I’ve known Christin a long time and she is a sweetheart of a person,” Miller said. “I know she didn’t mean to push. I don’t think she really anticipated what my reaction was going to be and I think by the time she sort of realized it, I think it was too late and I don’t really, I don’t blame her at all.
“I feel terrible that she is taking the heat for that because it really is just a heat of the moment kind of circumstance, and I don’t think there was any harm intended. So, it was just a lot of emotion for me, it’s been a lot over the last year and that you sometimes don’t realize how much you contain that stuff until the dam breaks and then it’s just a real outpouring.”
****************************************
Bode Miller had just tied for a bronze medal in the men’s super-G at the Olympics in Sochi, Russia, on Sunday and it was time to be interviewed. NBC had already established Miller’s quest as an emotional story line, putting a microphone on his wife, Morgan, to hear her reactions to his races, and having the couple sit for an interview with Tom Brokaw. He was being humanized — as the changed man, the family man, the mature 36-year-old whose brother had died last year.
This is the type of storytelling that lubricates NBC’s prime-time Olympic engine.
This time, the engine backfired.
It was not out of bounds for NBC’s Christin Cooper to ask a medal winner questions about his brother’s death. (Miller’s brother, Chelone, was a snowboarder who died last year at 29.) It was a relevant area to pursue, part of his Olympic biography. And Miller brought it up in response to her first question, saying that he had “a lot of emotion riding” on the race.
Bode Miller, who didn’t think his time would be good enough for a medal, was emotional with his wife, Morgan Beck, after winning a bronze.Always Room at the Inn for Another Medal FEB. 16, 2014
Cooper picked up on that quickly and asked, “Bode, you’re showing so much emotion down here, what’s going through your mind?” That probably should have been the last question about his brother. This was, after all, an interview with a great skier who had just won a bronze medal, the sixth Olympic medal of his career. He had done no wrong to be milked for more emotion than he wanted to reveal.Cooper needed to strike a far better balance in her questions so that the takeaway for viewers would not be that she was badgering him.
Maybe the absence of detail in his answer — he said only that it had been “a long struggle coming in here. And, uh, just a tough year” — compelled her to go forward.
“I know you wanted to be here with Chelly experiencing these games; how much does it mean to you to come up with a great performance for him? And was it for him?” she said. Now she was sounding intrusive, and maybe doubting his fraternal inspiration. It was one question too many, at least the way it was phrased. But it pushed Miller into a thoughtful answer — that he did not know if he had won a medal for his brother or to “make myself proud.”
He was holding up, but tears had started to trickle down Miller’s face.
He was being a stand-up guy, even if he was being pulled through a wringer.
Now was truly the time to stop. If you’ve made a medal winner cry, it is time to simply say “thank you” and move on. It was on tape, so NBC could have cut it off and gone to Matt Lauer in the studio. Instead, Cooper forged on, wondering whom he seemed to be talking to when he looked up in the sky before he started his run down the mountain.
It was not a bad question, but by this point, it was overkill.
“What’s going on there?” she said.
Miller’s helmeted head was bowed and he was unable to answer. The clock kept ticking, and I expected NBC to turn its camera elsewhere or for Cooper to say, “Thanks, Bode, you had a great race.” That did not happen. And there was no interview with the gold medalist, Kjetil Jansrud, to plug in and change the tempo.
Instead, Cooper, a former Olympian who won a silver medal in the giant slalom at the 1984 Games, tried to comfort Miller, putting a hand on his shoulder. In all, NBC lingered over this scene for 75 seconds — as Miller continued to weep, as he walked away, as he was comforted and as his wife embraced him. He might have cried on his own, for his brother, for joy, for the way his life had changed. But had the tears not been provoked by Cooper’s questions, we probably would not have seen that emotion.
Dan Hicks, who called the super-G race for NBC, talked over some of this tearful imagery — unnecessarily — mentioning how Miller had seemed like a different skier than in the past and how his emotions “continued to flow out.” Yep, we saw that.
