Kyrie Irving And Draymond Green Think The Earth Is Flat…Maybe

As you’ll see following the original story, a new interview with Irving suggests that he may have been trolling (or he might’ve received a crash course in science overnight). Either way, he and Green are rich and successful and that bit of information won’t really change that. Eh…

From FOX Sports:

It all started on Friday, when Reddit pointed out Kyrie Irving believes the Earth is flat. You know, as one does.

That claim comes courtesy of an appearance from Irving on Channing Frye’s and Richard Jefferson’s podcast, because apparently Jefferson is trying to conquer all media. During their discussion, Irving earnestly, incorrectly, and bafflingly states the Earth is not a sphere (via ESPN.com):
“This is not even a conspiracy theory,” Irving said. “The Earth is flat. The Earth is flat.

“It’s right in front of our faces. I’m telling you, it’s right in front of our faces. They lie to us.”

[And it continued via another interview…]

“I think people should do their own research, man,” Irving told ESPN. “Hopefully they’ll either back my belief or they’ll throw it in the water. But I think it’s interesting for people to find out on their own.

“I’ve seen a lot of things that my educational system has said that was real that turned out to be completely fake. I don’t mind going against the grain in terms of my thoughts.”

Then Draymond Green was asked for his opinion on the matter…

UPDATE:

So…Dan Snyder Was Partying For Trump Last Night

It should also be noted that — earlier last year — Snyder’s wife donated to Donald Trump’s campaign. So, yea…f*** the whole family, really. From The Hill, where you can read more on the story:

Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was among the guests at an exclusive reception in the nation’s capital Tuesday night to celebrate President-elect Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration.

The controversial owner was spotted by reporters at the black-tie event, billed as the “Chairman’s Global Dinner,” at the historic Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in downtown Washington.

The event, which 500 guests were expected to attend, is intended to introduce foreign dignitaries to Trump’s Cabinet picks and lawmakers.

Kevin Durant Speaks On Social Media Hate

hi-res-7be19e9e968cdf3badd17d4556e05c30_crop_north

Speaking to ESPN, Kevin Durant recently spoke on the incredible about of hate (like, Lebron taking his talents to South Beach hate) that he now receives following his move from OKC to Golden State:

It is what it is, but I tell you one thing, all that stuff stays [online]. Nobody’s ever coming to me in my face and saying none of that. It’s jokes. Everybody is just waiting for it. If you really didn’t care [what I say], you wouldn’t even follow my tweets. So obviously you care about something. But what, I’m going to get mad at that? Hell nah.

That’s what kind of makes their day… Just being like, ‘Oh, I talked to one of my favorite basketball players [on social media]. Even though I hate him, but he’s still one of my favorites. I talked to a celebrity I really like but everybody else hates him, so I’m going to join in on the party.’ Everybody’s jumping on the waves. That’s just how it is.

It’s fun, man, because it’s entertainment. And I appreciate them letting us give them that opportunity, that experience. So if you want to heckle or if you want to cheer, as long as you’re getting a release from whatever is going on in your normal life, that’s cool. That’s what life is about. You have to take the good with the bad.

WTF News: Josh Norman Vs. Dez Bryant

As you probably know, Dallas beat the Skins this past Thanksgiving. Don’t really need to say much else on that, but what’s going on between Josh Norman and Dez Bryant certainly became newsworthy. From Business Insider:

During the Dallas Cowboys’ 31-26 win over the Redskins on Thursday, Norman and Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant got into several physical altercations, having to be separated and warned by refs to knock it off.

When the game ended, the two went helmet to helmet and again had to be separated by teammates.

Afterward, both players took turns ripping into one another in their postgame comments.

“First off, Washington needs to get their money back from Josh Norman,” Bryant told reporters, via USA Today’s Lorenzo Reyes. It was an apparent reference to a similar barb from Norman last season, when he said the Cowboys should ask Bryant for their money back.

Bryant continued:

“I didn’t make it personal. I was just going to come out and do my job and that’s exactly what I did. He wanted to bump and me and him got to bumping a little bit and it just made me attack him even more. I honestly feel like the guy is extremely soft. He’s a bunch of talk.

“If he was out and about, I wouldn’t dare on my life let him talk to me like that. Those words would never come out of his mouth. I promise. I promise it wouldn’t. We got after that ass and it was a hell of a win. It feels good.”

Bryant also said Norman was “holding” the entire game. He continued, taking another shot at the five-year, $75 million contract Norman signed with Washington over the offseason.

“You supposed to be a lockdown corner, and you can’t even play man-to-man,” he said. “He’s playing bail technique. That’s not man-to-man. He was scared. He was scared, man.”

“He was holding the whole night, man,” Bryant continued. “How much he got paid? Seventy-something? Damn.”

Norman also took shots at Bryant after the game, saying Bryant’s actions were “trashy.”

“Don’t step to someone when the game is over like that when they’re not even looking for you, or even having a conversation with you,” he said. “They won the game, so you have to tip your hats off to them. But I don’t do trash, and that was trashy on his behalf.”

Norman also said that Bryant told him, “Where I’m from, we unload the clip.”

Norman continued:

“I played him three or four times now. And those times, I don’t think he broke 30 yards, or had any significance of any kind in the game. Definitely didn’t have a touchdown.

“So out of those three games, you would think that a guy of that magnitude, of that kind of big standards, would do more than that. But at the end of the day, I will let him speak for himself. If he feels like he wants to have that, then go play with the kids on the playground.”

Check Out What The D.C. United Stadium Will (Probably) Look Like

qldu5vu

Interested to see the latest renderings of the D.C. United stadium (to be located in Buzzard Point)?

We spotted these (above and below) on Black and Red United, who get into some really good details about what’s to come — these were recently submitted to the D.C. Zoning Commission and come mainly thanks to opposition from developer Akridge.

Akridge’s biggest concerns, and therefore the biggest hurdles to the stadium getting finished without further squabbling, were a desire for retail space and a 1st Street that connects with their property south of the stadium. The total amount of retail space is 17,000 square feet, most of which is along the 1st Street side of the stadium. In the picture above, you can see the difference between the added retail space in the first image and the stadium without the retail space in the second image; below, you can see a closeup of what the retail space will look like.

Finally, one of the entrances to the stadium has been moved from the southwest corner to the middle of the stadium across from S Street. This is directly next to the retail shown above, and so a redesign to this entire side of the stadium made sense.

Presumably, the Zoning Commission will approve these at the final hearing come November 28th. If you’re interested, you can check out previous renderings here.

Kevin Durant Is Leaving OKC for Golden State

illo-kevin-durant-warriors-ftr-111715_vvc3jvn6tmis1hbhoy14qrj1b

We’ll just let him tell you (taken from the Players Tribune):

This has been by far the most challenging few weeks in my professional life. I understood cognitively that I was facing a crossroads in my evolution as a player and as a man, and that it came with exceptionally difficult choices. What I didn’t truly understand, however, was the range of emotions I would feel during this process.

The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player — as that has always steered me in the right direction. But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth. With this in mind, I have decided that I am going to join the Golden State Warriors.

I’m from Washington, D.C. originally, but Oklahoma City truly raised me. It taught me so much about family as well as what it means to be a man. There are no words to express what the organization and the community mean to me, and what they will represent in my life and in my heart forever. The memories and friendships are something that go far beyond the game. Those invaluable relationships are what made this deliberation so challenging.

It really pains me to know that I will disappoint so many people with this choice, but I believe I am doing what I feel is the right thing at this point in my life and my playing career.

I will miss Oklahoma City, and the role I have had in building this remarkable team. I will forever cherish the relationships within the organization — the friends and teammates that I went to war with on the court for nine years, and all the fans and people of the community. They have always had my back unconditionally, and I cannot be more grateful for what they have meant to my family and to me.

Lamar Odom Found Unconscious In Nevada Brothel; Possibly Brain Dead

lamar_odom_drunk_0

In addition to what you’re about to read, other reports specifically claim that Lamar Odom may also be brain dead. Damn. From TMZ:

7:15 PM PT — The Nye County Sheriff says the airlift of Lamar had to be scratched because his 6’10” frame was too big for the chopper. Instead, he was rushed by ambulance to a Las Vegas hospital.

The Sheriff also says the call came in at 3:15 PM for an unresponsive male at the Love Ranch, and paramedics stabilized Odom during transport to an area hospital. Sheriff’s detectives conducted an investigation at the brothel. It’s unclear what, if anything, they found on scene.

7:05 PM PT — Sources tell us Khloe and Kim Kardashian … as well as Kris Jenner are heading to Las Vegas shortly to see Lamar at the hospital.

Lamar Odom is fighting for his life after falling into unconsciousness at Dennis Hof’s Love Ranch South in Pahrump, Nevada … TMZ Sports has learned.

Sources at the Love Ranch tell us … 35-year-old Odom arrived at the Ranch Saturday and was partying with the girls for days. A source at the Ranch said Lamar was taking an herbal substitute for Viagra.

We spoke with Hof … who tells us Tuesday afternoon, a woman went into Odom’s room in the VIP suites and found him unconscious.

We’re told the woman began screaming for the manager — who called 911.

The manager rolled Lamar over on his side and saw “mucus-type liquid coming out of his nose and mouth.”

An ambulance took Lamar to Pahrump hospital, where doctors intubated him … an indication he could not breathe on his own.

We’re told Lamar is being airlifted from the hospital to Las Vegas for more treatment.
Our sources tell us, “It’s not good.”

We’re told Lamar had been partying at the ranch by himself — with no friends or entourage — and is now alone at the hospital.

The ranch staff says they want to be in the room with Lamar but since they’re not family they’re not allowed.

Matt Barnes Reportedly Attacked Derek Fisher Over Affair With Barnes’ Estranged Wife

WMC Action News 5 – Memphis, Tennessee

From WMC Action News 5:

Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes was involved in an altercation with former teammate Derek Fisher, according to the New York Post.

Barnes’ estranged wife [Basketball Wives‘ Gloria Govan] and Fisher have been dating for several months after Fisher divorced his wife in March.

Barnes reportedly traveled 95 miles from the Grizzlies training camp in Stanta Barbara, California, to Los Angeles to confront Fisher after learning the two were dating [UPDATE: Barnes apparently learned that Fisher was in the former home he shared with Govan via his 6-year old twins].

Barnes and his wife are currently separated.

A source told the New York Post that Fisher received a few scratches and will not press charges. Fisher left the scene before police arrived, and no arrests were made.

The Grizzlies released a statement regarding the incident:

“We are aware and currently gathering information regarding today.”

BEEF? Stephen A Smith Threatens Kevin Durant (Video)

From TMZ:

Someone call Vince McMahon … because Stephen A. Smith just went on a WWE-style smacktalk rant directed at Kevin Durant … in which he essentially threatens to dig up dirt that will DESTROY the NBA star!!

It’s pretty crazy … Smith went on ESPN’s “First Take” to respond to comments made by Durant — in which KD called BS on one of Smith’s NBA reports about him. Durant called Smith a liar and claimed neither he nor anyone in his inner circle has ever talked to Smith.

Smith clearly didn’t take too kindly to the statement … and UNLOADED this morning:

“I sit here today incredibly offended by the personal attack that this man has put against me,” Smith said.

“What I would like to ask Kevin Durant and some of the brothers who talk behind my back in the NBA who probably put him up to something stupid like this … Do you really want me to come out of this seat and go back on the scene? Do you really wanna see me in an NBA arena?”

“Because I can assure you I’ll find out more in 10 minutes than I can get from 50 phone calls …. I have proven it.”

“I am a black man on national television with a big mouth and I will still stand up today here and I’ll put my resume spanning 22 years plus up against anyone in this industry.”

“We really wanna go here? We really wanna start something with ME???? You sure about that??? I just want people to think about that.”

Seems the gauntlet has essentially been laid down.

Bryce Harper & Jonathan Papelbon Get Into Physical Fight During Nationals-Phillies Game

D.C. sports as a whole…absolutely embarrasing. From Bleacher Report:

The Washington Nationals’ disappointing season has officially reached a new low.

A day after the team was eliminated from playoff contention, tempers boiled over in the dugout Sunday in a clash of the face of the franchise and a trade-deadline acquisition. Outfielder (and NL MVP favorite) Bryce Harper and closer Jonathan Papelbon got into it during the bottom of the eighth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The incident started after Harper flew out to left field. When Harper made his way back to the dugout, Papelbon started chirping at his star teammate. That confrontation got more heated as the two got closer to each other, and ultimately, Papelbon went after Harper.

Wizards Practice Facility Coming To St. Elizabeths

The deal is expected to be revealed in full tomorrow (Wednesday), and must still be approved by D.C. Council. From the Washington Post:

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser has reached a tentative deal to build a $56.3 million Wizards basketball practice facility and Mystics arena for majority team owner Ted Leonsis on the east campus of the former St. Elizabeths hospital in one of the poorest corners of the nation’s capital.

Details are still in flux, but officials said the city plans to build and own the facility while the teams’ owner would contribute $10 million to aid the surrounding neighborhood. Events DC, the District’s quasi-public convention and sports agency, would manage the property and contribute up to $32.5 million of the cost.

The project would include a modern training center similar to those other NBA teams have built in recent years. The Mystics would move their home games to a 5,000-seat arena at St. Elizabeths from the Verizon Center.

Max Brown, chair of Events DC, said the project marked a chance to bring entertainment and sporting events to a neglected part of the city.

“This has been an under served area for a long time, and this project is going to catalyze and transform the St. Elizabeths campus,” Brown said.

The talks are further evidence that Bowser wants to make new sports venues a central part of her economic development efforts.

Tom Brady Cleared To Play After Judge Nullifies Suspension

From NFL.com, where you can read the full story:

Tom Brady will be under center for the Patriots’ season opener next Thursday.

The ruling, handed down by U.S. District Judge Richard Berman on Thursday morning, nullified the four-game suspension levied against the Patriots quarterback back on May 11 when Ted Wells, an independent investigator hired by the NFL, asserted Brady’s connection to deflated footballs used in the AFC Championship Game this past season.

The decision came after multiple attempts at settlement between Brady, his council, the NFL Players Association and the NFL. On Monday, Berman dismissed both sides after just a few minutes after realizing they were too far apart to reach a settlement.

There is no word yet on whether the NFL will file an appeal.

Adrien Broner Finds A Way To Make His Latest Press Conference Hilarious (By Only Saying One Word)

From TMZ:

You ever heard of an N-word save??

Well, you’re about to see it in action — courtesy of boxer Adrien Broner.

Long story short …. Adrien’s taken a vow of silence (crazy, considering how much he loves to talk) until his Oct. 3rd bout with Khabib Allakhverdiev.

So, he appointed his assistant “White Ticket” to speak for him at a news conference yesterday. Things went swimmingly … until Adrian directed him to use the N-word.

Note: “White Ticket” is white.

Redskins Teammates Reportedly Approve Of RGIII Being Benched

robert-griffin

It seems like the Skins are looking worse and worse from a PR standpoint: we had originally heard about players still supporting Robert Griffin III following his benching as QB (and presumed eventual departure). Now, TMZ is saying that isn’t the case:

Several members of the Washington Redskins tell TMZ Sports … they’re PUMPED the team is benching RG3 … with one player saying, “Now we can start winning games.”

We spoke with a handful of Redskins players — all of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity — and they were all on the same page … they’ve been wanting the move for a while.

One player told us, “We’re relieved. This is good for the team.”

Another player was more blunt … saying, “We have a better chance of winning with [Kirk Cousins] than Robert Griffin. Sometimes teams need a change and we obviously did.”

Even the defense is excited — with one starter saying, “The team is excited with the change. We are all looking forward to Kirk leading us this season.”

As for Griffin, one player tells us it’s not personal, it’s just business — “Robert is a professional. He will be ready when his number is called.”

RGIII’s Relationship With The Redskins Could Soon Be Over

From ESPN:

High-ranking Washington Redskins front-office officials and coaches want to part ways with quarterback Robert Griffin III, but are meeting resistance from team ownership, according to team and league sources.

The Redskins even have had trade conversations about Griffin with a handful of NFL teams, but have found no interest, and it remains unclear whether ownership would allow Washington to trade him, sources said.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that Griffin has lost his starting quarterback job, and depending on the events and conversations in the coming days, possibly his roster spot. Outside of ownership, there has been a groundswell of support from a strong segment of football people within the organization to change quarterbacks, but there is a question about whether they have the authority to part ways with Griffin, sources said.

Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan was hired this past offseason to rebuild the team, so he looms as a possible X factor in any big personnel decision that involves Griffin as teams trim their rosters from 90 to 53 players over the next week. McCloughan’s ability to produce a resolution that all sides can live with now looms large.

Animal Activists Are Protesting Michael Vick’s Signing To Pittsburgh

From ESPN:

On National Dog Day, a handful of protesters convened outside the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice facility to object to the team’s signing of Michael Vick.

Four women stood behind a green fence across the street from the team’s South Side facility holding various signs, including one that read: “FIRST, BEN … NOW, VICK … WHAT NEXT.”

Another read: “Jail time is not enough. Ban Vick from football.” The women are from the “Justice with Animals” group, protester Ellie Gordon said.

Vick pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges in 2007 for his role in a dogfighting ring. He served nearly two years in prison and has played six NFL seasons since, including five with the Eagles and one with the Jets. The Steelers signed him Tuesday night.

The objective of the group is “to show the Steelers we don’t approve of this,” said protester Natalie Ahwesh, a season-ticket holder.

“This move is embarrassing. It’s upsetting. I’m angry,” Ahwesh said. “I’m not going to be able to go to the games and have fun and watch with my family. The season is ruined for me as long as he’s on the team.”

The group plans to protest at future practices. Police arrived at the scene Wednesday, including three patrolmen on motorcycles. The protesters were not demonstrative and remained relatively silent when not answering questions from media.

While speaking from his locker after Wednesday’s practice, Vick said he doesn’t pay attention to public outcries about his past because of the emotions involved. He pointed out that he recently worked with the Humane Society to help save the lives of dogs, doing “some great things that I’m very proud of.”

Steelers players and coach Mike Tomlin have said they support Vick and believe he’s overcome his past.

“After going through what I went through, what transpired, the best thing to do is to try to make amends for what I did,” Vick said. “I can’t take it back. Only thing I can do is try to inform the masses of kids to not go down the same road I went down.”

Vick said he plans to get involved in local dog advocacy efforts soon, which Ahwesh said might assuage concerns locally about Vick’s presence. Ahwesh would like to see Vick commit to outreach in local schools.

For now, Vick said he’s concerned with perfecting his role as the backup and chasing his first championship. Vick calls starter Ben Roethlisberger a “future Hall of Famer.”

“What I’ve heard from everybody inside this organization is there’s only one goal, and that’s to get a ring,” Vick said. “I understand why I’m here. My role is clear. I can focus on that.”
