Industry News: RIAA Is Pissed Over Anti-SOPA/PIPA Campaigns

….like we give a shit. From The Daily What:

Recording Industry Association of America President Cary Sherman lashed out against Wikipedia, Google, and the protestors who helped kill SOPA and PIPA in a New York Times editorial, accusing the Internet companies of running a campaign of “hyperbolic mistruths” and abusing their power.

Those arguments should sound familiar: they’re the same ones made by MPAA boss Chris Dodd when Wikipedia first announced its anti-SOPA blackout.

Sherman went even further, though. He implied that people opposing SOPA “simply believe that online music, books and movies should be free,” and that most of the anti-SOPA letters sent to congress came from the same Anonymous hackers who took down the RIAA’s website in retaliation for the shutdown of Megaupload.

It looks like Jimmy Wales’ hope that the entertainment industry would show “a little more humility” on copyright issues was a little bit premature.

Has Earl Sweatshirt Officially Made His Return?

From Billboard Magazine:

Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator, announced the next release from the collective, “Odd Future Tape Vol. 2,” on Tuesday, stating the collection of new material would arrive Feb. 20 — but without Earl.

“Sweatshirt Will Not Be On The Tape,” he tweeted, before unveiling his fellow MC’s new Twitter account, @earlxsweat.

In his return to the web, Earl promised to release new material, if he reached 50,000 Twitter followers. His count stood at nearly 27,000 on Wednesday evening.

His future with Odd Future is unclear: Tyler’s Twitter page alluded to a dramatic situation, while Hodgy Beats wrote on his Twitter page, “Nowadays people have personal intentions tryna use my ni**a earl… Earl isn’t free.”

Odd Future, however, are notable pranksters — it may take a more public appearance to prove that the MC has finally returned.

Jay-Z Reportedly Not Contributing Financially To His Own Charity

From The Daily:

The hip-hop artist gave just $6,431 to his own charity in 2010, a year in which he earned an estimated $63 million, according to tax records for the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund examined by The Daily.

His superstar wife, Beyoncé, made in the neighborhood of $87 million, according to a Forbes estimate — yet she didn’t give her husband’s foundation a dime.

But the charity is hardly an afterthought for the rapper, formerly known as Shawn Carter. He is scheduled to perform the first of two benefit concerts at Carnegie Hall in New York City tonight, splitting the proceeds between his charity and the United Way of New York. Tickets range from $150 to $15,000. Jay-Z is rapping for free, yet it remains to be seen how many crispy Benjamins he’ll personally contribute.

Jana Fleishman, his representative, declined to say whether Jay-Z has given any cash to the fund since 2010, but notes that he contributes in other ways.

“Jay, along with his family, provided office support, overhead support, [mother] Mrs. Gloria Carter’s 100% effort and time, computers, FedEx expenses, accounting, and treasury function support. This was at no cost to the charity,” Fleishman said in an email to The Daily.

Still, tax records show the charity had to pay $1,209 for office expenses, $1,401 for telephone, and $4,696 in other expenses in 2010.

Fleishman also said that in 2011 — a year for which tax returns for the charity are not yet available — a Jay-Z performance helped raise $1.25 million for the charity at its Carnival at Pier 54 event.
