Trinidad James: MVP At SXSW Basketball Tournament (Ecko TV)

For the last few years, Hard Knock TV and The Smoking Section have teamed up for the HoopXHang 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at SXSW. This year, Ecko Unltd. was in the building to compete, and though we weren’t able to win it all (better believe we’re coming for that spot next year), we did get a couple W’s and some great footage along the way.

The story of the day was Trinidad James, who put his skills on display—taking the ball to the cup and knocking down long-range jumpers, as well as a game-winner—en route to leading his team to the championship.

Other participants included rappers Dizzy Wright, Problem, Clyde Carson, Killa Kyleon, YP, PUSH! and more.

Rick Ross’ Show Cancelled In Ottawa Over Rape Lyrics

More backlash over Rick Ross’ controversial bars on Rocko’s ‘U.O.E.N.O.’ (which he was unceremoniously removed from):

The 37-year-old Florida rapper was supposed to roll into the capital city on Tuesday for a concert at the Ernst & Young Centre, but “security concerns” prompted the show’s promoter, Urban Jamz Ent., to pull the plug on Friday.

Ross’ scheduled appearance created a storm of controversy on campus as many reacted strongly to what they saw as the promotion of rape culture.

Black never saw the contract, but says organizers were rumoured to be paying Ross between $100,000 to $250,000. Organizers were also apparently paying for sound and light equipment, technicians and promotion, Black said.

Black also disputes CUSA’s attempt to distance itself from the controversy late last month by suggesting its role was simply purchasing a block of tickets to sell to Carleton students at cost.

Chris Brown’s Bodyguard Confirms That Drake Sent Over Love Letter Before Club Bottle Brawl

trashed-club1

Chris Brown’s bodyguard Big Pat decided to sue W.i.P. for his injuries following the infamous rumble between Drake & Chris Brown. In his lawsuit, there were a few things that seem to answer some of our questions. From Hip-Hop Blog:

The summer 2012 fight between Chris Brown and Drake continues to have unforeseen ramifications. Brown’s bodyguard, 43-year old “Big Pat” Strickland, has filed a lawsuit claiming that W.i.P., is responsible for bad cut he received in his head during the brawl. He says the club sat Drake and Brown’s camps far too close to each other, and served Drizzy’s crew too much alcohol.

And, in a major twist, Strickland claims Drake sent over a note taunting Brown.

“I’m f–king the love of your life,” the note read–according to the Strickland suit.

Of course, this led to a “massive bar brawl that involved bottle throwing, possible gunshots and a general state of riot and disorder,” the suit claims.

Nas Invests In Mass Appeal; Becomes Associate Publisher

Nas-Large-Professor

Nas is placing his bets on Mass Appeal Media, so much so that he dropped six figures. He’s also been appointed Associate Publisher of the magazine (check out his classic cover with Large Professor above). From Forbes:

Nas explained that he’d been dismayed at the lack of options for readers interested in all aspects of hip-hop culture, particularly on the newsstands. He considered starting his own publication, as Jay-Z did, but figured he’d have better luck using an existing brand as a launching pad.

“Mass Appeal has a legacy and respect,” he says. “It already has a foundation … I just feel like I can add on because I can lend my kind of cultural expertise and my professional acumen, and develop the business.”
