ANKHLEJOHN & HNIC – Actual & Factual (EP)

MC ANKHLEJOHN and producer HNIC are two of the DC area’s most talented artists who still pursue Hip-Hop in it’s “purest” form. So, these two coming together for a short EP makes perfect sense. Think Underground Hip-Hop, aggressive boom-bap, 90’s-style Rap that sounds genuine. We tend to post a lot of Trap, but this is a refreshing break from that…Enjoy.

Kur – How It Never Was (Mixtape)

Kur is like Meek Mill on steroids. The Philadelphia rapper’s new mixtape How It Never Was, might position him as Meek’s protege. He raps faster (“Energy,” Never Before), better (“Up”) and has more diverse subject matter (“Doggie Dog,” “Project Nights”). Kur can paint a picture of life in the “trenches” of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods or do lyrical acrobatics and amazing speeds. I do wish he rapped less about girls and clothes and more about getting his mother out of the hood. How It Never Was will probably propel Kur into the ears of many listeners nation-wide, thanks to help from Meek Mill and company. But, will anything be better than “When I Lost It”? That song is easily my pick for best rap song of 2015.

STS & RJD2 – Hold On, Here It Go

When is the last time you heard some Sugar Tongue Slim? When is the last time you heard some RJD2, for that matter? The two have come together to form a producer/rapper duo and have a project, creatively title STS x RJD2 coming out next month. “Hold On, Here It Go” is the first single. RJ told Rolling Stone that the track, featuring the Bohemian Dub Orchestra, gave him goosebumps. You can pre-order the whole project here.

Steady Leanin – Overlooked (Vol. 1) [Compilation]

One of our favorite blogs for up-and-coming rappers, Steady Leanin just dropped the first part of this new compilation of tracks they think deserved more shine;

Overlooked: Volume 1 is a collection of tracks we thought should have gained more attention. Instead of aggregating the same posts as everyone else, we always want to bring you new artists making names for themselves without the help of the usual blog circuit. Check out this compilation for some regional hits you may have missed and some deep internet rap tracks you’ve come to know Steady Leanin’ for supporting.

Cannibal Ox – Blade Of The Ronin (Tracklist)

14 years ago, Cannibal Ox’s The Cold Vein LP was released and quickly became one of the most critically acclaimed underground rap albums of all time. The duo split with producer El-P soon after and had a series of dissapointments (poor follow-up records, mismatched musical ventures, etc.) Now, hopefully the duo can finally bring the magic back with this new album, Blade Of The Ronin. Below is the tracklist (the album will be mostly produced by Bill Cosmia.)

Run The Jewels – Album Sessions with the Fader (Video)

The Fader trekked up an hour and a half outside New York City to watch El-P and Killer Mike record their second collaborative album;

Over the summer, we drove up to Garrison, NY to hang out with Killer Mike and El-P in the idyllic country recording compound where they were holed up hammering out RTJ2, their second album as Run the Jewels. As Killer Mike put it to us on camera, standing before a row of stately conifer trees, it was a pretty unlikely setting for the streetwise rappers to record: “The process of doing the album out here in the middle of nowhere is strange,” he said. “There’s no sex clubs and drugs and violence, and it’s pretty peaceful and serene. And that’s kind of not what Run the Jewels is about.” Still, as El-P described the woodshedding session, it was pretty much business as usual for the duo, who also cut their self-titled debut there: “Constant inebriation, consistent and potentially unhealthy marijuana intake, the occasional psychedelic journey, and we just rap our asses off.” RTJ2 is out on Mass Appeal on October 28th, but you to tide you over, we put together a behind-the-scenes experience of all the jamming, bickering, and brotherly love that went into it. Plus, catch that vibe live on the upcoming, ginormous Run the Jewels tour.
