Macklemore Was Reportedly Almost Cut From GRAMMY’s Rap Categories

ASSOCIATED PRESS — Artists can submit songs or albums to multiple genres for Grammy Awards, but a screening committee decides where they best fit. Artists, though, can be nominated for multiple genres: Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” and “Pusher Love Girl” are nominated for best pop solo performance and R&B song, respectively. Rihanna is also nominated for R&B and pop awards.

Quillen, who has managed Macklemore & Lewis since 2009, said the heavy play on Top 40 radio “absolutely changes perception,” somewhat taking away from the group’s hip-hop credibility.

“And perception can be very powerful,” he said. “And the thing Ben and Ryan are messing with is perception and people’s desire to put things in boxes.”

Noah “40” Shebib, Drake’s producer, believes Macklemore & Lewis should earn rap nominations, adding: “I’m not against either decision.”

“The playing fields are different. (Macklemore is) playing in a world that has more numbers. Bigger impact, bigger reach, more everything. All the rappers, they can dabble in those areas, but they don’t necessarily exist in that area. If you want to talk about the logistics of it — that would be a reason in my opinion to isolate him into the pop category because that’s his weight class,” Shebib said. “Let the rappers that exist on the urban market fight that out between themselves. So from that point of view and logistics, I would put him in a pop category.”

Shebib won the best rap album Grammy with Drake for “Take Care” last year and they are competing with Macklemore & Lewis for the honor this year with “Nothing Was the Same.” Drake’s “Started From the Bottom” and A$AP Rocky’s “(Expletive) Problems,” songs co-written by Shebib, will battle “Thrift Shop” for best rap song.

Shebib said Drake, like Macklemore, has faced his critics in rap.

“Sometimes people say Drake’s not a rapper, he’s a singer, but there’s a certain group of people who take that opinion of Drake because of the music that he makes, being that he isn’t boxed into just rap songs,” he said. “Now obviously, we all know Drake is a rapper and should be in the rap category. Same thing applies to the Macklemore conversation.”

While pop radio largely aided in Macklemore & Lewis’ breakthrough, urban radio still plays the duo’s songs.

Ebro Darden, program director of New York’s Hot 97, said he believes Macklemore & Lewis should compete for hip-hop Grammys, though he thinks sonically the group “lends itself to a more mainstream taste palate.”

“If you’re rapping over a beat, it’s hip-hop,” Darden said.

Macklemore & Lewis’ ultimate competitor at the Grammys is Kendrick Lamar, who also has seven nominations. They will compete with Lamar in three rap categories, as well as for album of the year and best new artist.

The duo’s manager said the musicians — who will perform at the awards show airing live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles — are putting the negativity behind them.

“Ben’s been rapping onstage since he was 14 years old and before ‘Thrift Shop’ hit pop radio, he very much considered himself an underground rap artist, Quillen said of Macklemore, whose name is Ben Haggerty. “Ben also has a thick skin and he’s also extremely proud of and confident with the art he puts out. … But I think like anybody he’s a human being, he’ll look at a comment like that and it’s disconcerting. But he’s also quick to move past it.”

A Hip-Hop Drama Pilot Is Coming To FOX

Lee-Daniels-2010-SAG-Awards

From Headline:

Fox has given a pilot order to drama Empire, from the duo behind hit feature Lee Daniels’ The Butler – writer Danny Strong and director Lee Daniels — and Imagine’s Brian Grazer, who brought the two back together. Per Fox’s new development model, the project will be geared toward series, with Fox likely picking up additional materials, but the nature of that supplemental order (backup scripts, bible?) is still being fired out. Empire had a put pilot commitment at Fox after sparking a heated bidding war in September. Written by Strong and to be directed by Daniels, Empire is described as a unique family drama set in the world of a hip-hop empire. 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine TV are producing, with Strong, Daniels, Grazer and Francie Calfo executive producing. The project marks Daniels’ TV debut, while Strong started his writing career in TV with the HBO telefilms Recount and Game Change, earning Emmy nominations for both and winning for Game Change. At Fox, Imagine has upcoming drama series Gang Related and event series 24: Live Another Day.

Mary Konye Found Guilty Of Assaulting Friend Naomi Oni In Acid Attack

Spotted on the Evening Standard:

A woman was today told she faced jail after being found guilty of hurling acid into the face of a Victoria’s Secret shop worker she claimed had called her ugly.

Mary Konye, 21, dressed in a veil and attacked Naomi Oni after following her home.

Ms Oni, 21, a former friend of her attacker, was left scarred and needed skin grafts after the incident in Dagenham, on December 30 2012.

Konye, of Canning Town, denied throwing acid but a jury at Snarebrook Crown Court returned a guilty verdict after more than seven hours of deliberations.

After the unanimous verdict judge David Radford warned her she faced jail.

He adjourned the hearing for sentencing on March 7.

He said: “I should make clear that in my judgement this is a case that will in all likelihood have a substantial custodial sentence.”

The victim left court in floods of tears without commenting.

Konye stood impassive in the dock as the verdict was read out.

The court heard that Ms Oni suffered serious burns to her face and chest, lost her hair and eyelashes.

CCTV footage obtained by detectives showed a figure in a niqab following Ms Oni as she left work at Westfield shopping centre in Stratford on the evening of the attack.

The jury heard that the following day Ms Konye texted Ms Oni in hospital, saying “OMG, I can’t believe it.”

The pair, who had been friends since secondary school, fell out in April 2011 when Ms Oni allegedly accused Ms Konye of texting her boyfriend and called her an “ugly monster”.

Following the attack, it is alleged Ms Konye posted a picture of the burnt faced Freddy Krueger character from the horror film Nightmare on Elm Street She also wrote the message: “Who looks like Wrong Turn now?” – a reference to a character in another horror film.

It had been claimed in court that Ms Oni had previously likened Ms Konye to the character, triggering her resentment.

Ms Konye pleaded not guilty to throwing or casting a corrosive fluid with intent to burn, maim, disfigure, disable or do grievous bodily harm.

She had claimed that Ms Oni had doused herself with the acid to be like her hero model Katie Piper who suffered injuries when her boyfriend organised an acid attack on her in 2008. The court heard that Ms Oni had carried out internet searches of before and after the attack pictures of Piper.

DCI Dave Whellams said: “Naomi is in shock there is relief but also anger. She feels a lot of emotions.

“She is a very brave woman. Her attacker was a friend who after the attack rang her to ask how she was. She has suffered life changing injuries every time she looks in the mirror she will be reminded.

“It was all over a trivial argument people have all the time.”

Emphasising the pre meditated nature of the crime he added: “Her attacker bought acid, dressed in a veil and attacked her.”

“It was an evil barbaric attack she could have been killed.”

Garage Magazine Editor-In-Chief In Hot Water After Black Woman Chair Photo

UPDATE #2: A Black, Gay Russian artist has easily trumped the controversy with his own photo.

****************************************

UPDATE: The apologies have arrived. From Miroslava Duma, via her Instagram:

From Dasha Zhukova:

The chair pictured in the Buro 24/7 website interview is an artwork created by Norwegian artist Bjarne Melgaard, one of a series that reinterprets art historical works from artist Allen Jones as a commentary on gender and racial politics. Its use in this photo shoot is regrettable as it took the artwork totally out of its intended context, particularly given that Buro 24/7′s release of the article coincided with the important celebration of the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I regret allowing an artwork with such charged meaning to be used in this context. I utterly abhor racism and would like to apologize to those offended by my participation in this shoot.

Garage Magazine has a strong track record of promoting diversity and racial and gender equality in the worlds of art and fashion, and will continue in our mission to stir positive debate on these and other issues.

****************************************

From Huffington Post:

How’s this for a happy MLK Day?

The online magazine Buro 247 has published a story about Dasha Zhukova, the Russian editor-in-chief of Garage magazine, which shows the editrix perched atop a chair designed to look like a half-naked black woman. Ugh.

dasha

Claire Sulmers, the editor of FashionBombDaily.com, alerted us to the unfortunate feature and calls the image an example of “white dominance and superiority, articulated in a seemingly serene yet overtly degrading way.”

We couldn’t agree more. Although the chair also comes in “white woman,” we can’t help but be filled with anger and frustration over the onslaught of negative imagery, constant disregard and unabashed bigotry that continues to plague the fashion industry. From Bethann Hardison’s crusade to end racism on the runway to our attempt to educate society over and over and over again about the nonsense that is Blackface — the stories of racially insensitive absurdity are never ending.

Sulmers goes on to point out that the chair appears to be inspired by a collection designed by British pop artist Allen Jones in 1969. Yet this specific use of a black woman’s figure strikes a deeper cord. “The art and fashion industries are the few bastions of society where blatant racism and ignorance are given the greenlight in the name of creativity,” Sulmers writes.

Well it certainly seems that way, and this Buro 24/7 editorial is just another layer of icing on the cake.

JAY Z, NBA Hit With $600 Million Lawsuit Over Brooklyn Nets

Brooklyn-Nets-logo

Spotted on Radar Online:

Time for Jay Z to add one more item to his list of problems. RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned that the rapper and businessman has been named as a defendant in a $600M lawsuit by a disgruntled entrepreneur who claims that he trademarked the name “Brooklyn Nets” long before the NBA team ever moved out of New Jersey.

The Plaintiff, Dr. Francois de Cassagnol, filed a pro se complaint with the Eastern District of the State of New York on December 9, 2013, asking for a juried trial over the matter — and $600 million in damages, at least.

According to court documents obtained by Radar, de Cassagnol claims that the NBA, Jay Z, and developer Bruce Ratner ”fraudulently conspired” to use “loopholes” in the U.S. Patent Office so that they could use a term he says he registered more than ten years ago.

Indeed, documents submitted as evidence show that de Cassagnol filed applications in 2012 for “The Brooklyn Nets Entertainment Logo,” which was first used in the State of Louisiana back in 2003.

He even claims that before the team moved to Brooklyn, he spoke with officials at the New Jersey Nets organization and the NBA who assured him that the team would not use the term “Brooklyn Nets,” but would most likely opt for “New York Nets.” Unfortunately, he claims, “It was pure mismanagement of the facts.”

In 2012, the team announced they would go by the name “Brooklyn Nets,” and ever since, de Cassagnol has been enmeshed in a legal struggle trying to get what he says is his due.

UK Basketball Assistant Coach Charged With Assault

Lex18 reports:

An assistant on the coaching staff of the UK basketball team has been arrested and charged with assault and wanton endangerment after an incident involving his wife.

Brian Shorter, a part-time assistant strength and conditioning coach for the University of Kentucky’s basketball team, was arrested early Thursday morning accused of shoving his wife into an unheated garage and throwing water on her.

A source said there was an argument between Shorter and his wife at their home on Russell Springs, early Thursday morning. According to the victim, it came to a head when Shorter pushed her into their garage, which had no heat, and locked her in there. The victim claimed that about 40 minutes later, Shorter returned and threw a bucket of water on her. She, then, apparently made her way to a nearby hotel where she called for help.

Shorter was arrested at his home.
