J. Cole Speaks On Moving His Release Date Up To Compete With Kanye West

J. Cole recently spoke with Billboard and made it pretty clear that he knew what he was getting into. Some memorable quotes from the piece:

“Instantly the lightbulb [turned on]… it got real. I made one phone call to somebody that would know, just to make sure first. As soon as I got it confirmed, I was like, ‘Yo…’ The idea hit me instantly: ‘You got to go to that date,'”

“I’m not going to sit [here]… I worked too hard to come a week later after Kanye West drops an amazing album. It’d be like, ‘Oh and J.Cole dropped too, a week later.’ Nah. I’m going to go see him on that date. He’s the greatest. So it’s like, I’m a competitor by nature so it was instant, it wasn’t even a thought.”

“It’s a definite statement about how I feel about my album, which is confident.”

“At the same time, let’s not forget this is Kanye West. He bets 100, 1,000, whatever the perfect is. His track record is flawless. I’m only expecting an incredible album from him…

“…But I know what I have.”

J.Cole Speaks On Doing Away With Sports Themes For Upcoming Album

Get More:
J. Cole, Music News

From MTV:

His Roc Nation debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story was a continuation of his basketball-themed mixtape series, which began with 2007’s The Come Up, but album number two ushers in a new era.

J. Cole Will Use ‘Born Sinner’ As A ‘Canvas’ To Get His Message Across
“It was just time for something new. I wouldn’t have minded doing it again but I felt that I closed that story,” Cole said of the new title. “That metaphor and that storyline had really ended. Metaphorically I was just a kid working to get on this basketball team, got cut — that was The Come Up, then The Warm Up was like, alright I made the team, I’m on the team, now what? I’m not in the game, I’ll just ride the end of the bench. Then Friday Night Lights was like ‘come on man, you’re still not gonna put me in the game? What I gotta do? Here, I’m gonna kill it in practice.’ ”

Finally, his studio album completed the cycle. “Sideline Story was like, ‘Wow, I really am starting now,’ and I feel like I ended that chapter when it’s all said and done. Plus, this new theme is really more reflective of where I’m at and where I’ve been at for the past two years, so it was just perfect to move on.”

J. Cole – DJ Drama Interview; Speaks On ‘Hottest MCs’ List

J. Cole appears on DJ Drama’s show in Atlanta to speak on a number of topics, such as his career….as well as what other’s think of it in the form of a list (but he doesn’t give a f***):

“I don’t know, but I don’t really give a f**k. It is what it is. Think about it, from what they say, it’s the past year, I’ve had a quiet year. But still, I should be on there. I don’t give a f**k, DJ Drama…..they’re still gonna die. They’re fu**ng dead, and I’m gonna kill them.”

“We shouldn’t talk about this anymore. They want this, f**k these guys. By the way nobody’s competing, some of these guys you putting up against each other are from different fu**ing planets. They shouldn’t even be in the same conversation, so what are they really talking about. Future doesn’t even give a f**k about Kanye. They don’t even interrupt each others’ lives and they’re not competing on the same level. So what are you doing? I don’t really know.”
