Rick Rubin Hints At A Possible ‘Yeezus’ Sequel

rick-rubin3243

Rick Rubin recently did an interview with The Daily Beast (check there for the full interview, it’s a long but interested read) and may or may not have insinuated that there might be a sequel to the current #1 album in the county, Yeezus:

How did you come to work on Yeezus?
Kanye called me. I’d just finished working at the studio for about two months on another album, and I was getting ready to go away on vacation for a couple weeks. Then he called up and said, “Can I just come play my album?” And I said, “Sure.” I always like to hear what he’s working on. So he came over to my house in Malibu. We listened. I thought I was going to hear a finished album, but actually we listened to probably three and a half hours of works in progress.

What did the album sound like at that point?
Kind of meandering, unfocused, usually without his vocals. I assumed that the album was scheduled to come out next year. So I said, “When are you thinking of finishing up?” And he said, “It’s coming out in five weeks.” Like completely confident and fine.

He wasn’t stressed.
Not at all. I said, “I have a record coming out in November that’s a lot further along than this.” He said, “Really? What are you doing for the next five days?” I said I was going to go away. Then he said, “Please help me. Would you be open to fixing it and shaping it and finishing it off?”

Did he realize how much more work it needed?
To me it seemed impossible what he was asking. I remember I wasn’t feeling that well that day, and I was thinking, Is the music making me sick? I don’t feel good about this. We ended up working probably 15 days, 16 days, long hours, no days off, 15 hours a day. I was panicked the whole time.

When he came to you with the record, did you have a sense of what needed to be done?
Initially, he thought there were going to be 16 songs on the album. But that first day, before he even asked me to work on it, I said, “Maybe you should make it more concise. Maybe this is two albums. Maybe this is just the first half.” That was one of the first breakthroughs. Kanye was like, “That’s what I came here today to hear! It could be 10 songs!”

So there might be another Yeezus in the pipeline?
Might be.

Cole’s Born Sinner, not too far behind with 297,922, and Mac Miller’s Watching Movies banking 101,795. It was a good week for Hip-Hop.

UPDATE: So, according to recent reports, Ye & Kim’s baby’s name is not yet revealed (so Kaidence may not be the name, after all), and there is a good chance that they are selling the news to the highest bidder. C.R.E.A.M.

According to MediaTakeOut.com, a nurse at Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai Hospital (where Kim gave birth to her & Kanye’s first child) revealed the name — Kaidence Donda West — which pays tribute to Yeezy’s late mother, Donda.

Kanye West has added the full credits for his album, Yeezus, on his website; the project includes Frank Ocean, Kid Cudi, Chief Keef, Justin Vernon, Charlie Wilson, King L and Assassin (not Iamsu!, which some of the early tracklisting had listed). There are some surprises as co-writers on the album as well: Lupe Fiasco on ‘Black Skinhead’, Ab Liva and Beenie Man on ‘Send It Up’, and Guru, DJ Premier, Pusha T, Young Chop and Marley Marl on ‘Guilt Trip’.

Yeezus also has a long list of producers, which includes Daft Punk, Mike Dean, Travi$ Scott, No I.D., Hudson Mohawke, S1, 88-Keys, Arca and more. Yeezus was executive produced by Kanye and Rick Rubin, and co-executive produced by Ché Pope.

ALBUM REVIEW: Kanye West – Yeezus

ALBUM REVIEW: Kanye West – Yeezus
★★★☆☆

The buildup to Kanye West’s Yeezus was building to near-mythical proportions prior to it’s release yesterday. In the midst of the other albums that were dropping the same week — J. Cole’s, Mac Miller’s, etc. etc. — it was without a doubt that Yeezy’s secretive ass album would take the top spot. And it probably will….as far as sales; after having a listen, I definitely feel that, while it’s made an impact, Kanye reaches so far off at times that I’m almost confident that he’s sacrificed creating a true classic in place of simply obliterating Hip-Hop’s boundaries with this album.

‘New Slaves’ (in the form of one of many of Kanye’s worldwide video projections)

Simply put, the album starts off pretty far left field, only for Kanye’s “style” to pretty much bleed all over by the listen’s end. This means that — for me — ‘On Sight’ started off headed toward cringe-worthy only for things to get damn-near nostalgic with the sample-beautiful ‘Bound 2’. He brings some cool features, who all somewhat-unfortunately seem to become part of the production rather than actual vocal features (this couldn’t be said more for Chief Keef’s haunting appearance on ‘Hold My Liquor’). Lyrically, he’s showing out over the whole album, so it’s no negatives there, even with his sometimes random subject matter:

“I am a God/So hurry up with my damn massage/In a French-ass restaurant/Hurry up with my damn croissants…” – I Am A God

It’s just that damn production. Spearheaded by Rick Rubin and featuring the likes of, well, everybody (HudMo, Daft Punk, Mike Dean, Travi$ Scott, Lunice (TNGHT)….the list goes on), Yeezus‘ main concept sonically seems to be minimalist, percussion-driven, mechanical…..dark. The more I listen to it, I definitely appreciate it more; but I do find myself wishing for more with the beats when you hear how beautiful that last song comes in.

In closing, Yeezus may end up being an album that’s far ahead of it’s time, and can be described as absolute genius. But with other dope artists building upon their own sound (that we all listen to them for) and bringing out excellent projects in the same week/month, I’m afraid that Kanye might have gone too far into space for this to ever be considered a classic in our lifetime.

Perhaps I’ll feel different listening to this decades from now.

Kanye West May Be In Trouble For Parkinson’s Lyric

170263321

The American Parkinson Disease Association’s VP tells TMZ that they took offense to some lyrics on ‘On Sight’ (from Kanye’s latest album Yeezus):

“We get this bitch shaking like Parkinson’s”.

Kathryn Whitford, VP  of The American Parkinson Disease Association had this to say about the song below:

”We find these lyrics distasteful and the product of obvious ignorance.”

Kanye West: The Samples (By Chris Read)

WhoSampled and Chris Read have decided to dig through the crates for some of Kanye’s dopest sample choices. Definitely a great listen, if anything. Tracklist (with links) and full sample stream below:

As Yeezus fever grips the internet ahead of tomorrow’s official release of Kanye‘s electronic opus, we thought it a perfect opportunity to review some of the source material that has made Kanye consistently one of our site’s most popular artists. With a nod to the quirky sources of the forthcoming Yeezus and the trademark vocal chops of Cruel Summer, we revisit the early years of the Soul on 45 sound that made his debut LP a timeless classic and reference his wholesale reworkings of classics from the likes Curtis Mayfield, Ray Charles, Otis Redding and others: A whistle-stop tour of some of our favourite moments in the career of the poster boy for contemporary popular sample based Hip Hop.
