Nas Speaks On Upcoming XBox Series

Nas

Nas recently spoke to Rolling Stone on that XBox Series that we posted about earlier:

As a rapper whose 20-year career has relied on putting the personal on paper, Nas hasn’t been shy about letting the world into his own life. But with the announcement earlier this week of Street Dreams, his upcoming autobiographical drama series on Xbox, the rapper admits the show will be his most personal project yet.

Where does ‘Illmatic’ rank on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time?

“I’m hands-on with everything, so this show is 100 percent authentic,” Nas tells Rolling Stone. “Even if I don’t look cool in it, I just want it to be real and raw. I didn’t see this as a full autobiography at first. But I have so much that’s happened in my life already, there was no room for fantasy. I wanted it to be entertaining, but everything from my life seemed to be so strong. It’s all reality. There’s nothing from my life I didn’t want in there.”

The seeds of Street Dreams go back nearly two years, when Nas, his manager Anthony Saleh (who doubles as the show’s executive producer) and others on his team started to brainstorm a new way to tell the rapper’s story. “Once we developed a treatment, we shopped it to a ton of networks,” says Saleh. “They were interested, but we wanted to take another step forward in the technology realm and felt Xbox was the perfect partner to represent how we think about the world. Content consumption is changing by the minute and a non-traditional platform like Xbox is the perfect home for this.”

The rapper and his team are currently finishing up scripts for the show before determining Street Dreams’ production schedule. The show is still in the process of casting the lead role, though Nas says he hopes to begin production on Street Dreams this year.

While Nas won’t be acting in the series, the rapper will contribute music and co-write many of the episodes. Despite more than two decades as a professional writer, Nas says that writing lyrics couldn’t prepare him for writing a scripted series.

“It’s a whole different process,” says the rapper. “It’s really therapeutic. I look back and I think about my mom [who passed away in 2002] and I know she’s looking down. Sometimes, I have a conversation with her, like, ‘Did you ever think that our story would be put to film for people to see? Did you know it was that special back then?’ I felt it was that special. This is life. I have to accept that and that’s what writing this is like.”

Where does ‘Illmatic’ rank on Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time?

Street Dreams will be directed and co-written by Jonathan Levine, best known for his 2008 hip-hop-infused coming-of-age film The Wackness. Nas contributed his 1994 classic track “The World Is Yours” to the film, and Saleh tells Rolling Stone that the filmmaker was a natural fit.

“Jonathan was our first choice and when we met him, he was more excited than we were,” says Saleh. “He got it instantly and spent time in Queensbridge [where Nas grew up] to talk to residents and absorb the vibe.”

“I really felt what he was doing back then,” adds Nas. “The way that he filmed New York City and told his story was so dead on, i just felt that he was the guy to do it. I think he’s a brilliant director.”

Despite his openness, Nas admits he was reluctant and nervous to begin writing about his life, and says he’s planning to retreat for a bit once the series is released. “I’ve figured out an escape plan to get out of Dodge once this hits the air and I let people in,” says the rapper. “I don’t want to be around. I want to be on a beach. I don’t want to deal with it. This is my life that hopefully somebody can look at or learn from or be entertained by, but I want to get out the way.”

Nas Recalls Murder Of Friend Ill Will

In this throwback clip from Rugged Entertainment’s Peter Spirer, Nas discusses the time he spent in his childhood hanging out with good friend Willie Graham, who everyone called Ill Will. The Queensbridge rapper says him and his friend spent countless hours recording themselves rhyming and messing around on turntables. “If it was raining outside, we’d spend the whole day just f*cking around, know what I’m saying, “he recalled of the time spent with Ill Will.

Nas also touches on Ill Will getting ambushed by a girl’s family and shot in the back, and later how he named his label, Ill Will Records, in honor of his slain friend. – Vlad TV

XBox Is Developing A New Series Based On Nas’ Life

nas

Spotted on Deadline:

As Nas marks the 20th anniversary of his groundbreaking debut album Illmatic, a half-hour series project loosely based on his life as a hip hop artist in the 1990s is getting off the ground with a deal at XBox Entertainment Studios. Titled Street Dreams, the project, from Jamie Patricof and Lynette Howell’s Electric City Entertainment (The Place Beyond The Pines), is set in the 1990s in Long Island’s Queensbridge housing complex, where Nas grew up, and takes a look at music, family and the trials and tribulations of the rap game. Street Dreams is being written/directed by Jonathan Levine, who also grew up in New York, spending his formative years in the 1990s. New York in the 90s was the backdrop for his coming of age feature The Wackness, winner of the Audience Award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Street Dreams is now being developed, with Nas involved in the writing and music. His manager, Anthony Seleh, executive produces with Patricof, Howell and Levine. Patricof and Howell recently developed bodybuilding half-hour Muscle for HBO. Xbox has been actively buying scripted projects though it is yet to launch its first series. It also has in the works a pro skaters comedy series from writer Ian Edelman.

Will Nas Ever Release An ‘Illmatic 2’? (Video)

For the record….I kind of considered Stillmatic to fit that role. Illmatic 3, perhaps? From VIBE:

Last Friday (Jan. 24), Nas was honored at the second annual VIBE Impact Awards in Los Angeles. As a testament to Nas’ contributions in hip-hop culture, VIBE gathered the rapper’s closest friends and supporters for a private dinner ceremony that included speeches from the likes of J. Cole and Swizz Beatz.

Before plates of sushi and bottles were popped, the Queensbridge native sat down with VIBE to discuss his future projects for 2014. Nas says that his next album is well under way and fans should expect the new project this year. The veteran MC also touched on the idea of an Illmatic 2.

“Yes and No, I’ve thought about it before,” Nas tells VIBE on whether he would want to record a sequel to his debut album. “I definitely though about that. It just has to flow, it has to be natural. I can work on that and if I don’t like it [just scrap it],” Nas continues. “I have to feel it. It got to to be honest.”

VIDEO: Check Out Nas’ Harvard Hip-Hop Fellowship

Spotted on Complex:

Last October, Nas and Harvard University announced the details of the Nasir Jones Hiphop Fellowship. The program funds visiting scholars who engage in research and academia related to rap music. Now, a short news story from the San Francisco-based design studio Ammunition gives a glimpse into the real world implications of the program.

The clip focuses on Jared Bridgeman, a Boston rapper who also mentors young rappers in an after-school program at a high school in Cambridge. As Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates explains it, the aim of the fellowship is to incubate black entrepreneurship, and in Bridgeman’s program we get a peek at teens working on a craft that one day could turn into a profession, or maybe something even greater.

Nas Speaks On Collaboration With JAY Z, Justin Timberlake & Timbaland

The below excerpt is taken from a recent interview with The Huffington Post. I do hope we hear the song in question soon.

One particular track off the album that has piqued fans’ interest is, “Sinatra In The Sands,” featuring Justin Timberlake and Jay Z. What was the recording process like?
Excitement… Excitement to work and be in the place that we’re all are at, musically. Those are the guys who lasted the test of time, and those guys are at the top of their game. They’re just company to be in. So that’s the whole vibe of that. And of course the title says it all.

Lyrically, where are you taking fans on the track?
More like from a musician’s stand point, someone who’ve been around. Because Sinatra has been around and he has a long, long standing with the stage and the audience for years. And he evolved. His talent got better just like wine. And I think that’s something a lot of people want to achieve. So that’s what this song is really about. Striving to be the best you, like Sinatra had become.

Nas Speaks On Turning 40 With Miss Info

Thursday night was a glorious night for Jones Family. In celebration of Nas’ upcoming 40th birthday (Sept. 14), Hennessy threw their favorite rapper one hell of a b-day extravaganza. You already saw the video footage and photos from the party, but before all the bottles popped, Nasir spoke to Miss Info on the red carpet about aging gracefully into one of hip-hop’s elder-statesmen. QB’s finest reflects on how he always had an old soul and though he’s turning 40, he’ll always be young at heart. – Miss Info

Nas’ 40th Birthday Celebration

Nas turns 40 years old on Saturday. Last night, he celebrated his born day with Hennessy at Avenue nightclub in NYC. Guests included Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Maino, and Special Ed. DJ Mos and D-Nice were behind the 1s & 2s last night, and if you weren’t in the house, here’s the footage from what went down (above).

Nas Launches Fire Victim Fundraiser

Last month, D.C. resident Stanley Young and his eight children lost their home to a fire. Nas learned about Young’s misfortune and launched a donation page for the family. His goal is to raise $50,000. You can help the family by contributing here.

This is real. It is me. I’m putting in $5,000 myself. Never done something like this, but I have faith that our American community can pull together a miracle for this strong family who needs our help right now.

I know this is just one family out of millions, and we aren’t solving a global problem. But I believe that a happy ending to a story like this can be the beginning of something bigger for our communities. Everyone, if they can, should lend a hand to our fellow man in their times of need. We’ve all been truly blessed, and the least we can do is to pass those blessings forward.
