BET Cancels 106 & Park

This actually makes sense: as kids continue to move further and further into the digital realm, the televised broadcast becomes less and less important until it’s untimely demise. As stated by BET:

America’s No. 1 music variety show on cable television, 106 & PARK, will host its final daily on-air show on December 19, 2014, concluding its impressive 14-year run. The 106 & PARK brand remains strong and will continue to produce various specials throughout the year, including its annual New Year’s Eve show, 106 & PARTY, along with live event experiences at the BET Awards and BET Experience. In 2015, 106 & PARK looks forward to continuing its reign as the hottest hangout on one of the coolest digital platforms, BET.com.

Stephen Hill, BET’s President of Music Programming and Specials, had this to say about the show:

AJ accepting Janet Jackson’s challenge to…dance. Bow Wow laying that kiss on Tyra Banks (or was it the other way around?). Free crawling around the set LIKE Catwoman WITH Catwoman Halle Berry. Julissa’s taking over Halloween as “Wonder Woman.” Keshia brilliantly bonding with First Lady Michelle Obama. Paigion flying around the world with Rihanna on a 777. Rocsi salsa dancing with Victor Cruz and putting him to shame. Shorty and Ms. Mykie’s killer rap, “The History of Justin Timberlake,” visably thrilling JT himself. Terrence beatboxing while Jamie Foxx rhymed. Tigger making Tom Cruise do the of-the-moment “motorcycle dance.”

We all have our favorite moments from the show that has put youth culture on television daily since the first year of this century. We have pride in being involved with the show that has welcomed almost every movie star, music superstar and fresh-faced talent you can name (you can even throw in a first lady). We’ve all laughed with and been entertained by the young men and women hosts that have charmed us at 6 p.m. (and more recently 5 p.m.) each weekday.
All of us have been touched by 106 & Park.

Now it’s time for 106 & Park, as a daily TV entity, to take a bow and exit.

It’s been a great 14-year run as America’s top music/variety show on cable. And now that very valuable brand is going to take its talents to the digital realm. The interactive brand you helped build, 106 & Park, is alive and well…and it’s moving to the space in which our audience NOW interacts with music the most: online. It’ll be very exciting to connect with the millions of people that are already engaged with 106 & Park and other BET digital and social media entities and bring content that will further evolve the 106 & Park brand — and enhance the overall BET Networks brand. As we transition to the digital space, we look to continue 106 & Park’s role as both a leader of and a mirror to youth culture. We’ll have more information to share about how that is to roll out very soon.

And 106 & Park will still have specials on BET. What’s a New Year’s Eve without 106 & Party? 106 & Park Presents: 106 & Party will be on-air to take our viewers into the beginning of the second half of this decade in a big way. And when it’s time for the BET Awards to come around, you can be sure that 106 & Park Presents: Live, Red and Ready will be ushering you into the show and that 106 & Park will be an integral part of the BET Experience.
I’m not trying to minimize it; this is a very big change. We thank all the people who have worked on the show over the years; the talented hosts, the hard-working staff, production crews and all the incredible guests we’ve had. Most of all, we’d like to humbly thank the “livest audience,” both in studio and at home, who fueled this landmark TV show from the very beginning. Meet you in the digital domain.

106 & Park will have its final daily on-air show on BET on December 19.

Onward and upward.

One Of Twerk Team’s Founding Members Shot & Killed In Georgia

Betty Butt, an original member of Atlanta’s Twerk Team was shot and killed in Cobb County Wednesday evening. From AJC:

A woman shot at a Cobb County apartment complex Wednesday afternoon has died, and three men have been arrested in connection to the incident.

Smyrna police spokesman Officer Chris Graeff said Wednesday night that the woman – one of two people shot at the Mission at Galleria Apartments – died as a result of her injuries. She was shot in the head and taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Channel 2 Action News reported that a man — the second person shot at the apartment complex — was treated at the scene after being shot in the side.

Three men have been arrested in connection to the shooting and a chase that ensued after the incident.

Graeff said that during the initial investigation into the shooting, authorities were told to look out for three men in a red Toyota Camry. Shortly thereafter, a Smyrna officer got behind the vehicle on Cobb Parkway, which sparked a chase.

After traveling down Windy Hill Road and onto Interstate 75, Cobb police officers got involved in the pursuit, Graeff said. The pursued vehicle then got onto Paces Ferry Road near Paces Mill Road in Vinings, where it struck a vehicle and overturned.

Marc Barnes Arrested, Charged For Theft & Destruction Of Property

Marc Barnes, once known as “DC’s nightclub king” has gotten himself into more trouble.

From the Washington Post:

Barnes, 51, prides himself on knowing how to run a popular nightclub, catering to 20- and 30-somethings looking for the latest “it” spot. His portfolio includes past popular clubs, such as Republic Gardens and Love, and his current venue, the Park at Fourteenth, in downtown Washington.

But on Oct. 31, he was arrested and spent more than 11 hours in a D.C. cellblock, charged with misdemeanor second-degree theft and destruction of property for something he said he does regularly: confiscating fake identifications or any identification misused by underage patrons to enter his club.

According to D.C. Superior Court documents, just after midnight on Aug. 10, Barnes and his security staff got into a confrontation with a Germantown woman over her identification. The woman, originally from Liberia, said that Barnes and his staff confiscated her Liberian driver’s license and residence permit, saying they were fake. Days later, according to the court documents, when the woman returned to the club to retrieve the documents, an employee told her that they had been shredded.

But Barnes, who pays his employees $10 for every fake identification they retrieve, said that the woman gave her identification that evening to an underage friend who had accompanied her to the club and that the pieces of identification were confiscated from the friend because they were being misused.

“I was locked up because she committed a crime,” Barnes says. “This is stupid.”

Barnes has become vigilant about cracking down on underage drinkers. In 2002, he was fined $2,000 by the city and later sued by the family of a U.S. Park Police officer who was killed when a 20-year-old woman got into her car and hit him after having several drinks at Dream in Northeast Washington.

Drake “Taunts” Wale After Raptors Win Over Wizards

@wale

Une photo publiée par champagnepapi (@champagnepapi) on

I’m pretty sure this was all in good fun. From MTV:

As an ambassador for the Toronto Raptors, Drake has many jobs. Gloating might be one of them.

Drake playfully tagged Wale in a scoreboard image of the Raptors defeating Folarin’s favorite team, the Washington Wizards [of which he is the Creative Liaison].

At the time the pic was taken, Drake’s face appeared on the jumbotron and the score was 86 to 64. Drizzy’s simple caption? “@wale.” The Raps ended up taking a 103-84 victory to remain undefeated at home. Drake might just be a lucky charm for the 5-1 squad.

Common To Host/Executive Produce New Show On Spike TV

Now this is a reality show that I would watch…spotted on EW:

Framework is coming to Spike TV. Hip-hop artist, actor, and author Common will host the non-scripted, 10 one-hour episode series created by Dwight D. Smith and Michael Agbabian.

The series follows 13 aspiring furniture designers over the course of 10 weeks as they compete in a series of challenges for $100,000 and the chance to have their work sold by a major manufacturer. A contestant will be eliminated each episode by a panel composed of Common and successful names in the furniture industry, Nolen Niu and Brandon Gore.

Smith and Agbabian will produce alongside Andrea Richter and Common. Framework premieres Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Freddie Gibbs Shot At In New York

2 wounded After Night Club Shooting in Brooklyn

Spotted in the New York Post:

Two people were shot in a trendy section of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, early Tuesday, in what was purportedly a rap beef.

Hip-hop musician Freddie Gibbs, who had just performed at a record store called Rough Trade, claimed he was the intended target when shots were fired at 1:13 a.m. while he was sitting in a black GMC Denali at North 9th Street near Wythe Avenue.

Gibbs’ crew had barely rolled one block away when the gunman — dressed in a dark hoodie — ran up to their ride and fired several shots inside, the rapper said.
“They tried to kill Tupac. They tried to kill me,” Gibbs told The Post outside the club. “I’m still alive.”

Asked why he would be targeted, Gibbs said: “I’m Freddie Gibbs. They tried to kill me, but I’m still alive.”

Gibbs said he jumped out and ran to safety back at Rough Trade. He spotted the gunman fleeing east on 9th Street.

The gunman was seen on security video inside Rough Trade, trying to blend into Gibbs’ entourage while his crew was hanging out inside the club’s Guardian Green Room, police said.

“He [the shooter] was standing around you guys all night,” an investigator told Gibbs. “He was stalking you guys. We can tell on camera, he wanted it to look like he knew you, but it’s clear he didn’t. When you guys left, he was waiting for you outside.”

Cops showed Gibbs pictures of the gunman, and another man seen inside the club with him, but the rapper didn’t recognize either man.

Rough Trade doesn’t have metal detectors and doesn’t check customers for weapons, police said.

“They don’t have metal detectors, they don’t use wands,” the investigator said, “nothing prevents somebody from bringing in a gun.”

The gunman could have shot Gibbs inside, but instead opened fire when they were all outside.

“At one point, he [the shooter] was standing right next to you,” the investigator said. “The opportunity was there if he wanted to shoot.”

One victim was hit in the leg during the attack, and the other in the hand. Both are expected to survive their wounds, police said.

Both victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital and listed in stable condition. Police did not identify the victims.

There were no immediate arrests.

FIRST WEEK ALBUM SALES: Logic’s Under Pressure

logic-under-pressure

72,558. With nearly seventy-three thousand units sold, Maryland emcee Logic nabs the number 4 spot on the Billboard charts with his major label debut Under Pressure. If I’m not mistaken — and I could be — that means that Logic is now the highest selling Hip-Hop artist from the D.C. area (Wale’s Attention Deficit sold about 28,000 units it’s first week). If you’d like to add that, click here and get yourself a copy (you can stream the project using that link as well).

That’s gotta be a moment in the city’s history, right?

Gucci Mane Writes A Letter From Prison

gucci-mane-will-remain-locked-up-until-2016-00

At this point, most folks don’t even think Gucci’s locked up anywhere due to the consistent music he keeps dropping, but here lies a letter the rapper has written from prison. You can check out the letter (and read the transcript if the written letter’s hard to understand) below.

My idea is to take my career to the next level. I am planning to take my music to a higher level and use the attention and influence to sell movies, books, clothing and be a living testimony to all people showing that you can start from humble beginnings and transcend to something greater.

It feels great to see my plan take root and begin to blossom even though I’m physically incarcerated but spiritually and mentally I’m free as ever. I enjoy working out molding my body and I look forward to changing my diet for the better because I realize to get to the status I crave I must make a life-change which is permanent not a quick-fix.

I can see myself now at the top of my game, me and my beautiful lady walking the red carpet at the best parties and getting flooded with accolades at the award shows and setting trends that will be copied around the world. This is not a dream though this is a plan that I will affect directly. I know that by me stayin sober, praying and fasting and stepping up to the plate to the father, and man I am destined to be I will impact my family and the entire universe for the better.

wale-camping-supreme-la-02

Spotted on HipHopDX:

With the Los Angeles storefront releasing the brand’s Air Force 1 Collection collaboration, conspicuous sneakerhead Wale was seen lining up with fellow heads outside the Supreme store yesterday (October 23).

The website Sneaker Mob quickly posted an article with a headline claiming that “Wale Camps Out For Supreme X AF1” before the rapper himself clarified that he was just there taking pictures with fans and Tweeted an underhanded slight at the site.

Court Increases Chris Brown’s Community Labor

brown-court-3

In order to finish his community service as soon as possible, the L.A. courts ordered Chris Brown’s labor to be increased to 4 days a week (so that he may complete by January), which is damn near a full time job. From TMZ:

Typically, community labor sessions last for around 8 hours — and at 4 days a week … that means he’s one day shy of having a new full time job.

Chris’ therapist wrote a letter to the judge raving about his progress, saying he has his act together. The shrink says he’s following his “medication management.”

UPDATE: Chief Keef NOT Dropped By Interscope Records?

chief-keef-jimmy-iovine

UPDATE: Miss Info reports that Keef is still signed;

News flash…Just because you want something to be so…doesn’t mean that it actually is so. Even though Keef has been tweeting that he is off Interscope, and “splitting” up with Jimmy Iovine…reality check, Chief Keef is, as of now, still signed to Interscope. Which also means that he can’t really be selling his upcoming mixtape on iTunes.
But maybe all this foolery will prompt the label to give him the walking papers he desires (deserves?).”

According to an AllHipHop source, Chief Keef (pictured about with Jimmy Iovine) was dropped by Interscope Records a few weeks ago. Apparently, the label didn’t want to deal with the his drug and legal issues so they began to “disassociate” with the rapper. Keef has been no stranger to controversy since his rise to fame a few years ago. Despite many problems, the relationship took a turn for the worse after the rapper move to LA, near Interscope’s headquarters in Santa Monica, California. Disagreements over how his album was promoted and about a second album were the final straw for the label, who was contractually allowed to drop Keef at anytime if his debut album Finally Rich didn’t top 250,000 sales. As of today, the LP has not even hit the 200,000 mark.
